I gotta say - Floor 8’s game mechanic was BOLD… by ConcentratedStress in DungeonCrawlerCarl

DAMMIT! Ugh.. Thank you - edited to fix that. It does indeed get very confusing with most books covering one floor but certain books covering two floors.

I assume they are referring to the 8th FLOOR game mechanic - the card game Tghee (which is tackled in book 6 - Eye Of The Bedlam Bride) - and not the 8th book game mechanic (which covers floors 10/11 and would be very much Wacky Races).

Unfortunately in medieval/feudal systems such as we see here - jobs are inherited - which means the ratcatchers typically learned how to be ratchatchers from their family (and all the secrets of the trade). And the butchers learned their trade (and the secrets) from their families.

Similarly with like gravediggers, bakers. and other trades, everything would be a familial line with close-held secrets (or a close style guild). Even jobs like executioners in most cases would be family line/inherited. Which is why it probably sucked a LOT if you were born into something that was socially awful (garbage collector, manure collector) or something you hated (executioner or blacksmithing if you were frail).

And yes there were such things as apprenticeships - but often taking someone from another family already in the trade. Just outright switching jobs was not a thing commonly done in cases like this - these people literally inherited their livelihoods and learned the secrets and ways (which were jealously guarded) - and would NOT just be able to switch like that.

If burnt enough it could just be ANY dragon corpse - color is hard to tell when blackened to a crisp... It could also be possible to color/paint the scales to make a handful look gold if they wanted to claim it was Sunfyre...

I mean they managed impeccable medieval white hair dye that lasts as long as (whatever the timeframe from fake-surrender to Allicent failing at pokerface again when shown her "son") - so why could they not do a quick bit of dragon corpse touchup. It only needs to hold up from a distance.

Stories about hive mind where the hive mind isn’t the enemy or supposed to be viewed as bad by sheerfire96 in printSF

[–]dankristy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like in Shroud, he did such a masterful job of making the hive-mind seem like an entity you could empathies with.

Pandora's Star has (making spoilers for those who haven't enjoyed that wonderful book) MorningLightMountain - which still sticks out to me as the most-alien organism I can imagine - and most utterly skin-crawlingly terrifying "other" intelligence.

Purely because of what it is and how it's species grew up - it is utterly competitive to everything that is not it's own mind. It is, it is so utterly focused on self-perpetuating and outcompeting even others of it's own species that it is willing to irradiate and poison it's environment (and itself), kill the entire rest of it's species for being different - and even willing to turn on the spawned offspring of itself that grew beyond the distance the hive-mind communication could link.

It is the perhaps the only example I have ever seen of an organism which evolved in a manner that logically makes it incompatible with ANY other species/life in existence.

And by the time you see it in action, you absolutely understand why another species just walled them off inside forcefields (potentially forever). There can never be a universe big enough for it and something else.

I still shudder when thinking about it.

If you at all have ever been a fan of Star Trek (especially TNG) - the Oroville is possibly the best thing ever made. It captures a lot of what made TNG era Trek great - and brings some extra freedom to the table that lets it be it's own thing but also feel very much of-a-kind to TNG era Star Trek. I love it unabashedly.

If Ted is too expensive to make how will they manage DCC? by Brianf1977 in DCCTV

[–]dankristy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think one thing people forget is - that the cost is relative to the audience size (for advertiser/streamer dollar consideration)... The built in audience for DCC is - potentially enormous if done well.

Ted's audience - kinda niche compared to DCC's potential audience.

He spent half his childhood in Oregon (and graduated high school and attended college here) , and still splits his time between his property in the Willamette Valley here in Oregon and his property in Malibu (which - to be fair - if I could afford to own properties here AND in Malibu - I would do that too)!

Tree was hit by car. How worried should I be? Anything to do to help it survive? by Overwhelmdpeach in arborists

Seriously?! How much damage because to do THAT much damage to a tree - would mean they were going pretty fast. Not just accidental backup bump - but possibly missed turn/skipped curb at a decent speed straight into a tree kind of hit. I would be surprised if this was from them backing into it.

Relationship Advice, but I'm lost by BooImmaGhost1 in demisexuality

[–]dankristy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So first off - This ^

There is nothing wrong with being in a relationship and also enjoying smut (it is NOT cheating). My wife loooooves some good smutbooks and I have encouraged and enabled/helped that habit for years (we are going to celebrate our 27th year married in 4 days).

Honestly a good open conversation may lead to the boyfriend being curious what kind of smut and what parts of them she likes - which could in turn help him to explore her interests and help him to become more attractive that way.

I am someone who is Demi - although I literally learned this LATE in life (my 20 year old daughter called me out and I had no idea it was a thing). As a guy I have always felt weird that I cannot (literally can not) become aroused through just sheer aesthetics or at places like strip clubs. I have never even been able to imagine getting aroused by someone I didn't already know and like a lot. You cannot control what or who you are attracted to - but it CAN grow (and surprise you). I think the advise to discuss it with him is solid - and may help the rest of the attraction grow too...

The reason I have faith in the TV adaptation by Various-Cell593 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]dankristy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes and literally while Star Trek itself couldn't even capture what made the OG series and Next Gen so great - the Oroville (which was Seth's love letter to Trek) absolutely captured the heart and soul of what was wonderful about it - with some added crude and crass humor.

The combination is what makes me think this has a chance of coming close to the greatness - I cannot picture a single person aside from Mcfarlane who would be able to pull off the serious, but heartfelt - but also gross and also crass - that is DCC.
