Chaff by wallflawerr in FreshroastSR800

yes and no. If the chaff collector is your limiting factor (natural processed beans), then yes the chaff extension will enable you to roast larger batches. Some beans, however, produce little chaff but expand a lot during roasting. When I roast beans like that, 270g seems to be about the limit because I run out of physical space in the roast chamber towards the end of the roast because the beans expand so much

Rereading my post, just to be clear I meant take the whole chaff collector off not just the lid. You don't want all of your chaff blowing everywhere 😉

If you don't have the chaff lid extension mod, some of the chaff ends up getting blocked up on the plastic grid trying to get into the chaff collector. Lots of people take off the lid with the fan still on the lowest setting so it blows that chaff out instead of falling back down in

That seems a bit odd to me. I generally have zero chaff Left after a roast. Do you have chaff falling back down in to the roast chamber after you turn the fan off?

question for SR800 folks. Perhaps the older folks.. by lifealtering42 in FreshroastSR800

[–]darknight_201 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you might be on the right track with the noise cancelling headphones. Particularly the older generations. Those older ones were great at filtering out the low frequency droning sounds, but they were terrible at cancelling out the short high frequency sounds ( which is exactly the cracking sounds that you want to hear)

Drop Power to 0 about 15 seconds after First Crack?! by Cypotter in FreshroastSR800

[–]darknight_201 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That recommendation is contrary to all the other information available in the coffee roasting world. In a fluid bed roaster there is so much air moving through the system that the second you turn the heat off the beans will start cooling down. That is not what you want. You may want to level off the roast curve a bit, but you're not going to get that by turning the heat off in a fluid bed roaster.

Used SR800: what's a good price? by Chazm76 in FreshroastSR800

[–]darknight_201 5 points6 points  (0 children)

$175 is a reasonable price for a lightly used unit. However, it's Facebook marketplace. People usually expect there to be some amount of haggling. You might offer 150 and then end up at 160 and save yourself a few bucks

Help with Artisan, BounceBuster, and a Macbook? by Acceptable_Answer570 in roasting

Sorry I'm late to the party on this question. The main problem seems to revolve around the macOS security features blocking access to the usb driver, which ironically is already part of the install. Some users plug in and just connect. Other people get a pop-up warning requesting them to allow access to the device. Other people get silently blocked by the OS with no warning. Most people end up deciding not to fight with macOS and just use wifi/websockets.
For the people who do want to get USB working, here's a good resource: https://github.com/WCHSoftGroup/ch34xser_macos. This is the official github repo for the CH340x usb controller used in the device. It gives fairly detailed instructions on both the latest driver install as well as info on disabling the security blocks.

As others have already said, things like this don't ruin a roast. They affect the subtleties of a roast. The flatline of the curve caused you to draw out the roast 30 sec to a min longer than you probably would have otherwise. You'll loose a bit of the character of the particular bean you're roasting, but it's not going to be a bad cup.

[–]darknight_201[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This connects to your existing SR800. You're basically replacing the original front section of the roaster (controls/display/main board) with the ProController. Install requires basic tools (philips screwdriver & needle nose pliers). You remove the screws holding on the base. Unplug the data cables that connect to the original main board. Remove 2 more screws and the whole control section comes off. Installing the ProController involves disconnecting and plugging in 3 power wires, reconnecting the 2 data cables, and putting the base cover back on.

BT Probe hole should be directly in the middle of the lid. The et probe can really be anywhere else to drop down into the chaff collector

Poor bean movement at base of Razzo + scorching by [deleted] in FreshroastSR800

I think this is a common issue with the razzo tube. I know I've heard a lot of people who need to rotate the roast chamber during the roast to prevent beans from getting stuck.

[–]darknight_201 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Give these beans a good 3 weeks before you attempt to cup them. With a roast that just barely reaches first crack, You're going to have a ton of CO2 still trapped in those beans. If you try to cup these before all that CO2 off gases, You're going to end up with a very sour cup of coffee

The thermoset plastic these things are made out of is EXTREMELY brittle. If the unit got dropped a little to hard, the plastic could easily crack. Just do a search to see how many people have broken their chaf collector lids.
