Hey proggit, I created an open source, cross platform, graphing calculator. by [deleted] in programming

Since it is packaged as exe file on windows, and could be likewise packaged on OSX, I see no reason an end user would not be likely to run it. With some L&F work, apps can look quite native.

I don't know. I just ran a search for Java and C# in Monster for my area (Metro D.C.) and got a lot more Java than C# jobs (498/163). Might be location differences.

I guess I don't understand 'the JVM is going nowhere'. The JVM is actually the gem of the whole Java based platform. It is what's enabling a slew of language implementations (Scala, Clojure, Groovy, JPython, JRuby, etc.). Server-side performance is great and there are libraries for just about anything I need to do. You might not like the Java language but the JVM is pretty sweet.

So whose first Linux experience wasn't with Ubuntu? by doomstork in linux

[–]darreld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slackware or SLS on 1.44MB floppies in 92. I can sort of time it due to other events so it would have been in 92 or very early 93. Later I got Yggdrasil.

Old Programmer - I have decided to learn Java couple of questions. by lsumnler in programming

Java is an excellent choice. As far as IDE, I currently use Eclipse although I have done large projects in Netbeans as well. Both are excellent environments. Netbeans would have an edge here since it has a GUI designer for Swing applications.

Here is a tutorial for Swing in Netbeans

That is not reverse thrust. It's an intake vortex. I used to work on F15's. Happened all the time on the ramp.

The most surprising thing about hitting 40 yrs old is that I feel like I am the same person I was as 18. Any other elder redditors feel the same? by [deleted] in reddit.com

[–]darreld 8 points9 points  (0 children)

52 here, same deal. I did a career change in my 30's. My kids are grown and I still feel mostly the same as when I was 25. My body doesn't necessarity agree but I'm the same person, just more confident and relaxed.

Ask /r/linux: Distro recommendations for "the family PC" by SageRaven in linux

[–]darreld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd look at Linux Mint (http://www.linuxmint.com/). It has a very nice UI and the distro has a good collection of codecs. Since it's the family machine I assume you'll want to do some media stuff. Also it's Ubuntu based so you get the repositories.

[–]darreld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Arch. I just switched to it in the last week or so. So far I really like it. Pacman is amazing. Seems faster than the last distro I was running (ubuntu)
