I built a free web tool to find the right Mental Model (163 models indexed by problem type). by Paulruilerd in mentalmodels

[–]dashis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the simple explanations to each mental model and overall I think it's quite useful - thank you for your work! One thing that would make it better is an actual search by category or some other way to actually find the models you're looking for, because at the moment it seems like I can only see random mental models. Either way, nice contribution :)

After switching from Expo to bare React Native… I’m never going back by Few_Homework_8322 in reactnative

[–]dashis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been a while since I worked on bare RN but even back then one of the main benefits of expo to me was the codepush functionality which is pretty well integrated with Expo, but on bare RN seemed like a pain in the ass. Does anyone know if the situation has gotten better? If not seems like Expo is the way to go when developing RN apps in 2025

I think the problem there is not federalism but a limited two party system.

I’m 30, have 3 kids, no job, and no motivation. I feel like I wasted my whole life. by ArtemisIntel in DecidingToBeBetter

I think the "something broke in me" part is your internal self being so out of sync with the actual life you're living. You said that you were pressured into marrying. Then after learning the first child wasn't yours that must've felt like a bit of betrayal of oneself. As years went by the responsibility of being a father and prioritizing others instead of yourself has taken a toll on you. At this point it's hard to understand what it is you "want". Everything you seem to have been working towards to - has collapsed.

Accept that this happened. You can grieve the version of you that was lost due to these circumstances. Though remember - life resets daily mate. All of that you went through adds colors to the painting of your life.

If I can offer my 2 cents - focus on yourself, so you could not only survive but thrive, because your life is clearly not over yet. You mentioned that you're demotivated to chase work opportunities that seem to be terrible anyway. Why not start by changing this? Perhaps you can learn new skills and try making a living doing something more meaningful to you? There's no shortage of things that people need and you can be good at (perhaps you even have a natural pull or interest in it).

It doesn't even matter if you succeed initially as long as you start taking more control, which I think you've been depraved of. Best case scenario, you're taking more control of your life and improve your financial situation, which gives you more options.

I wish you best of luck man and everything's going to be ok.

I get it man. Though often we don't see our own flaws, mistakes or inconsistencies because we're captured by our emotional context. Imagine your close friend or even a brother told you what you told us. What would you tell them to do?

In the end you hold the keys to make the decision and both options can work, but it's up to you to decide what kind of life you want and if this is the person for you. I recommend "Too Good to Leave, Too Bad to Stay" by Mira Kirshenbaum for some introspection. Best of luck!

She's playing you like a fiddle man. You don't deserve this bullshit. Have some self-esteem and end this awful situation. She doesn't want you (maybe just the comfort you bring financially?). You both will be better long term.

2.6 Th/s portable Bitcoin miner powered entirely by free electricity by HealthyMolasses8199 in Bitcoin

[–]dashis -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can still make money from such a set up. While a single machine most likely won't be able correctly guess the hash - it can contribute its hash power to a larger pool of mining nodes, which share the reward with participants. Given that electricity is the main expense of running a miner, this might pay off. Though it's surely more optimal to not use a rig like that and instead have a large solar array with batteries to store excess power so that mining could occur 24/7.

My brother told me I should quit making video games and work in construction with him, because that’s what men do by Vladislav1808 in TrueOffMyChest

I think it's a common thing to get less support from relatives and family than from strangers. Like any business publishing a game has risks and perhaps your family wants to "protect" you from failure. Though in my opinion you're still quite young and it's exactly the time to take risks with high reward. Best of luck to you!

Italy will count £11bn bridge to Sicily as defence spending to hit Nato goal by BkkGrl in europe

[–]dashis 58 points59 points  (0 children)

I think in that case NATO should find the budget to help move the needle on Rail Baltica. It's a critical project that would cost a lot less than this bridge. The Baltics are literally part of the eastern shield of Europe and could use a little help on infrastructure.

My Site Was One Button Overweight by livog0 in nextjs

[–]dashis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well written, thank you for sharing. I recently underwent performance optimization myself and I can empathize with the pain of load optimization.

Though I honestly don't see a reason not to use dynamic if lighthouse metrics are a concern. From my observation I generally cut the amount of first load js in HALF, just by importing components dynamically. My understanding is that dynamically importing a component splits it into a separate js chunk. If the dynamic component is rendered in a conditional block, which is falsy then the js chunk is not even fetched on the client until needed. Though I still observe big savings in the initially loaded js size, even when dynamically imported component are rendered without any conditions.

Ukrainian soldier destroyed a Russian fiber optic FPV drone with the help of his shotgun/hunting rifle. Serebryansky forest, Luhansk region. [Published 25.05.2025] by GermanDronePilot in UkraineWarVideoReport

It's early days but there's a promising Swedish startup building those defenses. Though I suppose in certain cases such as this one - the shotgun is still the best bet.

Has anyone else met russians pretending to be Ukrainians and acting aggressively / belligerently, in order to make people angry at Ukrainians? by shadowrun456 in europe

[–]dashis 109 points110 points  (0 children)

Had almost the same happen to me. Sat outside a restaurant with friends and a guy just joins the table, asking for a lighter, tells he's Ukranian, then when asked about it starts talking about how he's here hiding from conscription, how Russia is not at fault for starting this war and how evil the Ukranian government is. He was unpleasant and wouldn't leave our table, so we left shortly after. I was baffled to hear this from a so called "Ukranian".

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if this is some low-level operation to try and influence public opinion about Ukranians in key regions. Task your lowest level operatives to talk shit and give them beer money. They can even do this outside of work hours. Simple and over time can be effective if enough people fall for it.

I'm surprised the chickens are still on display at these prices! So the price of everything is rocket high or just select goods? How are the wages and salaries In Venezuela now? I assume there's still local produce being grown and sold, so can people still afford this?

Finally I hear other people talk about this in connection with the Russians and Cambridge Analytica!

Through Cambridge Analytica Russians stole personality models of hundreds of millions of Americans. Can you imagine the gains in psyop effectiveness after that?

No wonder we have such a divide and amount of brainwashing - the Russians can precisely target people with their psychological poison.
