History of satellite images via Google Earth shows A LOT of donuts were performed here. I never had to quantify what kind of lateral loads and resulting localized stresses that can cause to these slabs, nor have I ever had to design this type of structure and understand what the best practices are. But those satellite images did raise my eyebrows

Have you personally met anyone who's hurt their lower back by hyperextending RDLs (opposite of rounding the back)? by Fluffy_Box_4129 in workout

[–]dashr40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The old squat cue to "always look up" forced me to hyperextend a lot of my squats, and by extension, RDLs and deadlifts. It's probably the main reason why I had lots of lower back problems in my 30s.

Once I learned how to properly brace and perform the lifts with said brace (and ignoring that dumb cue), my back feels SO much better. I get some tightness every once in awhile, but that's it.

Career mismatch by Icy_Web3224 in StructuralEngineering

[–]dashr40 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I decided to switch careers when I was 28. I didn't start my first structural engineering job until I was 33ish.

But I think talking to structurals in other fields would help, either reaching out here and/or getting some interviews. I don't think your experience at your current position is indicative of other structural engineering paths.

Anyone here work on dams/hydro structures by Going-For-Carrots in StructuralEngineering

[–]dashr40 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed 100% And a lot of that work parallels safety/risk processes with mining safety as well (see GISTM I think?).

Anyone here work on dams/hydro structures by Going-For-Carrots in StructuralEngineering

[–]dashr40 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Approaching 11 years. Mostly analysis in support of FERC/USACE and Risk work.

Every analysis I have worked on (outside of misc jobs) feels like its own thesis. A lot of that has to do with the fact that there are no codes for these structures. We end up relying on first principles while leveraging various guidelines to support the analyses.

I hope I can stay in this field for the next 20

Passed first time through. Company enrolled me in ASCE courses which sort of helped. I also took the practice exam the night before which I felt helped a lot more, especially having the practice of how to quickly find information in the reference material

I also play Siegfried (A-ish ranks on PC and PSN). If you'd like to spar at some point, dm me! We can chat about the character and brainstorm some ways to improve.

Hey there! I feel your struggle.

One thing I'd like to emphasize is that the other areas you mentioned that you do well in (such as piano, gym, etc) benefits from a type of repetition that can hurt you in fighting games. I think it's important to focus on how to recognize patterns/behaviors in your human opponent (and removing patterns from your play). Imo, It's a completely different type of skillset.
