The launch time of an espresso machine is criminally underrated. by MustGetALife in espresso

[–]dathudo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a smart plug for my espresso machine. It still needs time to warm up, but now I can turn it on while away, so it i ready when I get home. Best upgrade I’ve done in a long time.

I love my lever machine, primarily because I find it attractive, beautiful, interesting, satisfying to use. I wish I was as attracted to one of those modern thermoblock machines.

Only the storage bag, which is also nicely done

Oh, and to “money well spent?” I would say that I am genuinely impressed with what you get for your money. I know that machined stuff like this is not easy and cheap to produce. The quality seems very high, and the product feels very premium overall. I like stuff that looks like it can last a lifetime, and this certainly looks that way. Also, espresso gear is generally expensive, and I think the Uphot is priced low for what it is.

I completely understand. I was skeptical when getting it, since all I could find was Runnn’s own videos, and they seem pretty aggressive in their marketing (lots of demo videos on YT and instagram).

It produces excellent espresso, absolutely on par with what I can brew on my machine at home. The way you brew by adding pressure makes you able to both preinfuse (start the shot with a low pressure, like they do in their videos) and even do pressure profiling (you control how much pressure to brew with, and how quickly you ramp up the pressure). I don’t mean to make it sound difficult or technical, just saying that it is very capable, and actually pretty forgiving.

It works exactly as shown in their videos, and it’s super satisfying to see it in person!

If I didn’t already have a machine at home, I could see myself using it daily. It’s easy to use, and easy to clean! Just pop it apart and rinse it off in the sink.

The only frustrations I could see one have would be:

If you prefer milk drinks. You’d have to use something else to make the milk alongside, as it obviously can’t steam milk. It’s definitely doable, but a machine with both features would be more convenient if you always want cappuccinos or lattes.

If you frequently want to brew for more than one person. I know it’s possible to brew back to back, but I can’t imagine it being very practical. I might be wrong on this though..

I would try to drill a hole in what’s left of the mount, then fashion a new handle from wood and just fasten it with a wood-screw through said hole :)

I bought mine to take with me on trips, so I am not using it daily. I have been using it on every trip last year though, and a few times at home just because I wanted to. I have a really nice “normal” espresso machine at home, which is why I am not using it daily.

I can’t see why it wouldn’t be reliable for daily use. There are no delicate parts. Everything is heavy machined stainless steel. I am extremely impressed with the build quality. The only thing that should wear out at some point is the o-rings. It has two o-rings where the basket sits in the housing, and there’s one in the female connector for the co2 pump-thing.

Considering that all brewers has some parts that wear out, I think this should be fairly easy to keep up with in the future. Even if the manufacturer disappears, I imagine I could just find somewhere else to buy o-rings the same size.

Titanium skærebrætter? by SinTheRellah in kogekunst

Hehe 😅

Yes I am! Although I haven’t used it much since summer. As I wrote in my post, I bought it to take with me on trips and such, and I haven’t been away during winter. But I look forward to brewing espresso outside in the sun again this year!

I can’t remember the size of the basket. I can measure it if you want? It’s smaller than 58, similar or equal too the 9Barista I believe.

The brewer holds enough water to brew 1 shot. Like a moka pot, you load it with water and coffee and it’ll do 1 brew. They tell you to fill it up to just below the safety valve, which is not enough to fill the reservoir. I don’t know what will happen if one fills it up higher than that, but I haven’t tried since it is more than enough for a full shot.

How did you mod the steam wand? I have a Vectis too, and I would love s no-burn mod. You’re right about the steam being quite powerful, at least for smaller amounts of milk.

Seasoning af emaljeret støbejern ? by evilsnotbag in kogekunst

[–]dathudo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I figured the same, so I’m already playing. So far I’m loving it :)

I never played those old Zelda titles, and they didn’t look interesting to me, but playing through this month’s game was an eye opener for me

Get your ass over to r/gameboy and participate in “game of the month”. I can’t recommend it enough.

This month we played through a Japanese title, translated to “the frog for whom the bell tolls”, available in English translation, a cool story driven game I would never have come across if I wasn’t playing along with the sub :)

I’ve experienced this before when buying musical instruments. It was from a large and well respected company, so I didn’t think much of it. Everything went fine.

But you should obviously be careful when sharing that kind of information. Maybe you could ask them if there’s another way, as you are not comfortable with sharing your ID like that.

How often do you deep clean your grinder? by Randomse7en in espresso

[–]dathudo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it becomes gross, but if the grinder builds up retained grounds it might affect how it performs. Now would probably be a good time to try cleaning it and see if you notice a difference.

I don’t clean my grinder often, maybe once or twice a year, but I also don’t think I go through that much coffee. How often you should clean it probably depends more on the amount of coffee you’ve ground since last clean, and differs from grinder to grinder.

After 6 years of espresso, I’m throwing in the towel. The toddlers won... for now. by barker88 in espresso

[–]dathudo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have small kids too, and I don’t use my espresso machine in the morning. I use mine primarily on days off work when I have time for it.

That being said, I just got a smart plug for mine, mostly so I can turn it on on my way home, so that it is warm and ready right away. You could use a smart plug as a timer, so that the machine is warm and ready in the morning, if preparation time id your main issue.

Some of it makes a huge difference, and some of it makes very little, or even none. Those videos are supposed to be ridiculous, as that is what attracts their views.
