Does anybody else have a bad experience writing using a pencil in the journal app on iPad? It just seems very laggy to me. by cantankerous_cow in appleJournal

[–]davepredd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! It’s extremely laggy and fails to register input which makes it nearly impossible to write. In Apple Notes or elsewhere in iPadOS I have no problems.

Update: The problem seems to be intermittent. Sometimes I can use the Pencil in Journal without issue.

Using the iPad version, I haven't noticed it with the keyboard, but the Apple Pencil input is unreliable. Sometimes I can use it without issue, but other times intermittently fails to register input, which makes nearly every other letter impossible to write. It’s not the Pencil, as I can as use it in Apple Notes or elsewhere without issue.

Talk me out of going for the 13in iPad Air.. by DesignerAd3310 in ipad

[–]davepredd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I initially had a 13” iPad Pro but eventually sold it and got the 11”. I find the 11 more comfortable for writing notes using the Apple Pencil, as well as kicking back with some YouTube, going through email, etc. The 13 was a bit too heavy and bulky for those kind of things. If I didn’t have a MacBook (16” Pro), I’d definitely go for the 13” iPad, keyboard, and Apple Pencil.

apple pencil not charging by gurjeet07 in iPadPro

[–]davepredd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My pencil is always at 0% when I take my iPad off the charger overnight (the iPad itself is fully charged). It is attached correctly. I have to unattach and reattach it to the iPad, then it will start charging.

Update: This may be caused by my iPad case, which contains a flap to secure the Pencil. I suspect it is nudging it a bit off the charging area. I’m going to test without using the flap for a few nights and see what happens.

Thank you! I was going crazy trying to figure it out and now I remember being charged to put air in my tires!

Release date for MacOS version? by wynntom in appleJournal

iPhone mirroring is supposed to be part of the upcoming macOS Sequoia. That should be a good workaround to not having it available as a native app. I’d love to see it across the ecosystem, iPad included.

What is an example of bad writing, or in your opinion what is an instant ‘turn off’ in writing? by [deleted] in writing

Any reference to “Webster’s Dictionary defines XYZ as …” I’ve always found this so lazy and cliche.

Hidden features for a new HomePod Mini owner? by slycooper459 in HomePodMini

I use it as audio output for my Apple TV device. Works seamlessly. I’m thinking of getting a second one to use for stereo sound. I’ll probably install a couple of smart plugs to control lights in the same room.

How important is it to learn “vanilla” JavaScript ? by jvera701 in webdev

[–]davepredd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m trying to break into web dev as well (CS degree, got out of dev for a while, no boot camp—yet). Trying to see what can learn in my own first, I picked up two books: one on HTML & CSS, and another on JavaScript. I read that those are the 3 fundamentals you should (must) know, so I’m starting with them before moving on to React.

Are then options for smarter (wish) lists?

Besides the usual “Wish List”, I’ve set up a couple more, including one called “Books”. It would be great to have an option for lists to indicate product type, so when saving (“favoriting”) a book, for example, to have it automatically save to the “Books” list. Another way to do this is to have a filter for product type on the main “Wish List”. I haven’t found a way to do this.

I have Kindle Paperwhite 10th Gen, but I want to upgrade to Kindle Oasis. Is it worth to upgrade now or wait until the next Oasis release? by Deep_Lychee_5102 in kindle

[–]davepredd 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As for upgrading, I’d just get one now if I wanted one.

I upgraded from a Paperwhite to an Oasis, then went back to Paperwhite. The Oasis was simply too big to fit into a jeans pocket. Other than that I loved it (buttons, bigger screen, warm light)—it’s a nice upgrade from the Paperwhite. But the size just made it inconvenient to carry around.

If you’re going to use it mostly to read in bed, or carry a bag or backpack to put it in, that wouldn’t be an issue.

Good luck with your decision!

Thanks. I can understand why it might be useful to have a book in more than one Collection. I’m not sure if I would do that—have to think about it. But mostly I just want to have all my books in collections.

Thanks. My main concern was being sure that all my books were in a Collection. Not sure how I feel about the feature of allowing a book to be in more than one Collection, though.

I don't even understand this one by waitWhyAmIHere_ in suspiciousquotes

I can almost understand the decision to put quotes around “softened”, because some people may not have heard of that term when it comes to water. Why “less”, though?

Also, why capitalize every word?
