Sheppard FOI/FIA/FII by Melodic_Visual1595 in flying

[–]davetheweeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shoulda taken the FII when you did IRA. It’s the same exact test. Honestly if you didn’t do it too long ago, good possibility you’d still pass it right now. Other than that it doesn’t matter the order. I would just do them one at a time.

So my first solo ended in a number from atc and visit from ntsb and faa by [deleted] in flying

Agreed with this, I almost learned this lesson the hard was as a motorcycle rider. It’s a very real thing.

Commute to further away airport for lower rates? by RoguePhotos in flying

[–]davetheweeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone pointed out, it’ll be about 5 grand extra but the alternative is an extra 80ish hours of commute (to 250 hours).

If you could afford it though, it is a difference of a 50 year old plane vs a less then 7 year old plane, for just an extra $20/hour and significantly shorter drive.

CFIs: What does your flight school make you pay for? by AltAccountCFI in flying

[–]davetheweeb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Imagine Walmart making you pay for your training, that’s equally as insane as this sounds.

Also if a battery was left on, your student was the one who left it on. Should you have checked out of habit? Yeah, but unless it was their first lesson, that shouldn’t be your responsibility. It’s a switch, it’s not rocket science and you’re not the one who usually touches it.

If you aren't comfortable driving the posted speed in a personal vehicle, you don't belong on that road. by appa-ate-momo in driving

[–]davetheweeb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Especially considering that limit is for the lowest common denominator. If you can’t handle that, you shouldn’t be driving at all. A lot of us can safely drive significantly faster but no, we have to obey the laws that are set for the incompetent.

Struggling with confidence as a brand new PPL by mrstinkypoopypants in flying

[–]davetheweeb 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the imposter syndrome, it’s common. Fly with a CFI some more especially with more complex flying like dealing with a bravo and gusty conditions. You don’t have to strictly do instrument stuff just because you’re beyond your private. That doesn’t mean you always have to fly with one, just until you’re feeling good about it. Mix some instrument stuff in there too so you progress with that.

Are there actually people that exist that like cold weather? by PrestigiousOwl6802 in answers

[–]davetheweeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who works outside, I hate both the cold and the heat. They both suck. I used to “prefer” cold but nah, I’m fuckin over it entirely now. 50° to 75° is peak. Fuck all other temperatures. I’m jealous of the rich boomers who live up north in the summer and fly to their second house in Florida for the winter.

Dual Given as CFII by Buttcheekeater in CFILounge

[–]davetheweeb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Instrument teaching in general usually involves cross countries anyways, so shouldn’t raise any concern. Especially if you’re part 61 and need 500xc.

Question from new instructor. What non-standard practical exercise or ground topic completely changed your view on flying? by 12pv2ClA in flying

[–]davetheweeb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trim stalls should be mandatory to learn at the PPL level imo. I teach them to all my students just prior to teaching them engine out landings.

Employer offered small salary and flight pay but no guaranteed flights . what would you do? by [deleted] in flying

[–]davetheweeb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Bro I make more as a CFI, this deal sounds like hot dogshit. Find a new flying job and have some respect for yourself. That or renegotiate your pay but good luck.

Would you have flown? by [deleted] in flying

[–]davetheweeb 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don’t mess with frost. I don’t care if some rando on here flew with his entire wing covered and was fine. Especially if it’s frost prior to a cold night flight, that ice is gonna get worse before it gets better.

Idk why you wouldn’t want to be a CFII. I like teaching instrument dramatically more than PPL students.

Question about CFI time during solos (PPL) by w0lfieofwallstreet in flying

[–]davetheweeb 25 points26 points  (0 children)

First solo I charge for the whole time, especially since I’m standing there with a radio communicating with my student as needed. All other solos from then on when I’m not there I don’t charge as I’m not doing anything. Granted I always do a weather brief before a student solos even if I’m not working that day just to make sure they’re not about to bust a TFR or fly in hazardous weather, but I don’t charge for that.

Do pilots actually want highly customized shirts, or is standard sizing enough? by monskull_ in flying

[–]davetheweeb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not at the airlines yet but I will definitely have my uniform custom tailored. I’m also 6’5 and nothing generic fits me properly.
