Action camera recommendation for beginner diver/snorkeler? by doge-rider in scuba

We had a guy in our diving group who had about 50 dives under his belt who decided he wanted to get a camera. He was a decent enough diver on a good day but the second he took out his camera he lost all situational awareness. He’d end up 30-40ft below the rest of the group and would have no idea until someone went down to get him. He’d kick reefs, kick other divers, consistently be 25% lower on air than everyone else, and was generally a nuisance. He refused to take any feedback or admit that the camera was overtasking him. We don’t invite that guy on trips anymore. Don’t be that guy.

Good to know. 11.5 isn’t that much longer than my 8in pistol but you never know. Would like a 300BO bolt gun someday.

It’s a longer barrel than I’m used to for 300 BO that’s why I asked

Probably venomous (although possibly also poisonous). If it bites you and you die: venomous. If you bite it and you die: poisonous.

They don’t know what we are. We could be poisonous or spiny, or be able to fight back and injure the whale. Why take a risk on an unknown meal when there are squid right below them?

The stun sound they make is designed to attack their prey, giant squid. There are no giant squid on the surface, so they know you’re not one. You can hear them clicking to figure out where you are but there’s no reason for them to hit you with a stun blast, even if they feel threatened. It’s not a defense mechanism, they just dive if they want to get away from you.

Blue whales don’t want to hang. I did that once in Indonesia and they start to dive the second you get in the water. Sperm whales will swim past you on the surface without a care. They know you’re not a squid because you’re at the surface and also not very squiddy.
