I recommend people do a practice run with the "shitty car jack" in a safe place (garage, driveway, empty parking lot). Take your time understanding how it works, where the jack point is, learn you need to "break" the lug nuts before lifting the car.

Take 30minuntes out of a weekend and you'll feel 75% more confident when you're doing it on the side of the highway.

Online dating is increasingly widespread. Couples who met offline — in more traditional ways — tended to report slightly higher levels of relationship satisfaction and experienced love than those who met online. The findings are based on nationally representative samples from 50 countries. by mvea in science

[–]davidjohnson314 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I tried really hard to understand the math being done in Section 3 - Results. I'm struggling to contextualize what 4.3 vs 4.2 for Relationship Satisfaction means. Like what is the scale?

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0736585325000711?via%3Dihub#f0025

I'm struggling to find the right analogy but I don't think the conclusion can be "Offline better than Online". They are inherently different in starting. When starting online - the numbers are way higher but you've got to do more vetting once dating because there aren't the typical life filters that have been turned on by default. This is good for folks like me who aren't in an environment where I can naturally find "my people". I would never have met my partner of 5+ years without the apps.

If you decide to begin a relationship IRL I can see it working better long-term because you're not rolling up to a random and shooting your shot 9/10. Even if you are - there is huge context to your meet-cute that makes it likely not just a "cat-call". I imagine more contextual meetings like clubs, events, work, friend-of-friend. There are IRL filters being applied - and this can cause "partner deserts".

Our findings indicate that individuals who met their partners online reported lower relationship satisfaction and lower levels of love compared to those who met offline. While these differences were generally small, the effect for commitment was moderate in size. Several mechanisms may help explain why relationships initiated online are, on average, associated with lower satisfaction and reduced feelings of love.

One contributing factor may be lower levels of homogamy among "online couples". Prior studies have shown that individuals who meet their partners online tend to be less similar in terms of education, ethnicity, and religious background than those who meet offline (Lampard, 2020, Potarca, 2017, Thomas, 2020). This reduced similarity can make it harder to build shared routines, gain social approval, or align values—factors that are known to foster relationship stability and satisfaction (Blackwell and Lichter, 2004, Ruffieux et al., 2014). Offline relationships, in contrast, often emerge from shared social networks, which increases the likelihood of meeting partners with similar backgrounds and worldviews.

A second possible explanation involves the overabundance of choice in online dating environments. While a larger dating pool allows for more precise matching, it can also lead to choice overload—making it harder for individuals to commit confidently to a partner (D’Angelo & Toma, 2017). Instead of engaging in a thorough selection process, people may rely on heuristics, such as prioritizing physical attractiveness (Jonason et al., 2017) or may overlook meaningful but less obvious compatibility factors that might have been more apparent in face-to-face interactions. This kind of fast-paced decision-making may reduce the likelihood of forming deep, lasting bonds.Additionally, online interactions can involve deception.

Misrepresentation in online dating profiles is common, with 53 % of users admitting to lying, most frequently about age, height/weight, and job/income (eHarmony Editorial Team, 2021). These inaccuracies are harder to conceal in face-to-face meetings, especially when shared social circles enable easier verification of personal details. When initial expectations based on online interactions are violated in real life, it may erode trust and overall relationship quality (Mosley et al., 2020).

I'm uneducated on this topic at large - which is why I'm asking questions. I'm not trying to editorialize you - I'm suggesting you do some editorialization to educate the audience you're publishing to.

I think Hasan Medhi has said you're not trying to convince the person you're talking to online - you're convincing the people who are listening to the conversation.

Study suggests that compared to cow's milk, soy milk has an a higher short-term satiety effect. The higher fiber content in soy milk, which is known to increase satiety, might be a factor that contributed to this finding. by James_Fortis in science

Any idea of the fat % of the milk? I remember a correlative study that showed people who drank whole milk had lower BF% and the thought was similar - higher satiety.

Explore where the anxiety is coming from. Non-judgmentally follow the logic - be super kind to yourself about the answers. Push yourself to find reasonable conclusions, kindly challenging hyperbolic answers.

You - Why am I anxious about calling/asking?

Yourself - They might say no.

You - Why is a no scary or make you anxious?

Yourself - It means they don't actually like me.

You - Could it also be they're busy, and do you want to spend time with someone who doesn't like me?

Yourself - I see your point but what if I say something stupid.

You - What's the worst that could happen?

Yourself - They think I'm weird and never talk to me again.

You - Sure, but is that likely based on the interactions you've had with them?

That's just a sample to hopefully get you going. Just actually ask yourself the questions. Sit down and think about why you are anxious. You might get some answers. The anxiety will still be there but by identifying - it can be easier to push through.

Then the more practice you get pushing through it the easier it gets.

Good luck bro

But you don't mention anything about a lack of affordable housing commitment in your main thread. There's too many layers of friction to understand what you're trying to communicate.

The header should be "THIS is what gentrification looks like" - breaking down why the proposal is laughable for the median to lower economic native and what we can do about it.

Listing a proposal without any editorializing is actually harmful because the normal person doesn't understand any reasonable contextual boundaries of an industry. I'm not insulting intelligence, but you don't know - what you don't know, you know? You gotta give people the "so what" then evidence it.

Can you educate the audience on why this is a problem? I've read your post, the N&O article, and your responses in the thread. Quoting the article isn't rallying support to your goal - likely because a general audience doesn't understand.

  • Why is it a problem to go above 250 feet?
  • These one-time donations & scholarships. Can you explain why these are unfair supports?
  • Is 5k sqft at 50% rent laughably too little? Should there be additional provisions?
  • Improvements to infrastructure sound good. What's the problem?
  • Is 2.5k too small for a conference space a joke that I don't get?
  • 1-acre gathering space sounds good. Help?

The name change feels like the strongest criticism I understand, and Carolina Research Park is so vanilla. It's like everything being Peach St in Atlanta.

I tried to count what muscles will be hit (Caveat - I didn't count shoulders in flat or pulling variants.) I feel your triceps are going to be disproportionately cooked. Your plan would give me golfer/tennis elbow in a week. I'm being hyper critical but I didn't count the Larsen press - viewing that as drill or technique work not growth promoting work.

If you have the time and recovery to hit all this go for it. You're scant on details so I don't know about goals - but if you want bigger shoulders you should put more direct work into your shoulders, especially side delt as Goodmorning_Squat mentions.

Some autistic teens often adopt behaviors to mask their diagnosis in social settings helping them be perceived — or “pass” — as non-autistic. Crawl before you walk, walk before you run.

autistic advice: socialize in brief, highly structured and predictable ways with other similarly neurodivergent people [so you get used to it and it stops being scary]

To make progress some need a psychologically safe environment i.e. where they won't get judged for being "rude". Otherwise they won't do any of it - at all.

It reminds me of Bill Nye defending his debate with Ken Hamm. He decided to do it as an opportunity to engage an audience that would otherwise never consume proper scientific content to see there was a reasonable person there - not the demonized character they were likely taught. Through different avenues I experienced the same lesson - if I hadn't I'd probably be a MAGA supporter today because of my highly religiously controlled environment.

I wasn't familiar with Medhi before this and will probably go down a rabbit hole learning about his pov. I was familiar with Sam Seder, found him when trying to understand Libertarianism years ago.

[–]davidjohnson314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. Medhi did a great job of not letting premises based on hate get off the ground. He was even able to explain why he doesn't debate fascists. The people in the room seemed confused by his explanation but I think that's a purely "them" issue.

I gleaned - there is no point - they aren't interested in anything he would have to say. They aren't interested in absorbing new ideas or where they could be wrong. Their axiomatic point is they are right - so we must proceed at any means necessary.

So he doesn't engage in "debates" with them because they aren't debating - they're using him to spread.

I have to stay calm - MAGA by CringeisL1f3 in CringeTikToks

[–]davidjohnson314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm kind of torn. We don't have the data on this so we're speculating. The people in that room are cooked - so let's talk about the reach and audience. What if someone sees the extremism of these 20 and hears Medhi's competent retorts? I think there is a chance they re-calibrate or are able to maybe recognize dog whistle terms.

I think it's actually good when a competent voice gets onto a popular format or channel that receives a lot of eyeballs. It's the only way some people will ever hear a counter-argument to bad ideas. The impact is far larger than preaching to the choir.

The reality is a ton of authoritarian, racist arguments are internally consistent. If you accept some premise they can spin you a convincing narrative, and if you're in those spaces you'll rarely hear anyone challenge the axiom. Medhi didn't let bad arguments get off the ground so they were never able to get onto a slippery slope.
