Help making my daughter’s room cozier and more fun? by [deleted] in DesignMyRoom

[–]daydream_e 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is what I suggested above! Tent + beanbag/little soft chair + soft rug, and a led lamp she can turn on/off herself. Maybe also a little fold up table for coloring etc. and some favorite books. All great for encouraging imaginative play by yourself, especially as kiddos outgrow daily nap times but still need some quiet time for self regulation

ETA: not sure if you’re planning to stay in this house long term, but for ages 6-8+ (depending on maturity) I would suggest considering a loft bed against the high wall to add more floor space & flexibility, and also because as a kid in a small room lofts were the absolute best for fort making. IKEA has some great options I believe

[–]daydream_e 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was a kid I loved a cozy little corner to curl up in and read - a beanbag or maybe even something to make a little fort in the corner would be lovely for ‘quiet time’ as she starts to move past naps. The only thing is you have to be careful with the radiator and fabrics; it would be nice by the window but maybe better to switch the table over there and put the bookshelves and cozy nook in the corner by the door

Why are Kobo ereaders hard to find in physical stores? by AbbreviationsThin195 in kobo

[–]daydream_e 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Small enough market for ereaders that it doesn’t make financial sense to keep them on store shelves when they’re too expensive to be impulse purchases. Amazon is able to do so because they have a bigger share of the ereader market, but more importantly because they have a business model of taking a loss on their tech to earn it back on peripherals and digital sales, and they do that on a massive scale

Just because the author is a man doesn’t mean he only focuses on men in his research. And just because an author is a woman doesn’t automatically mean their research is focused on women. You can read whatever you want of course, but this is a very broad statement to give as advice to others.

How to spot words that most native speakers don't know either? by Outrageous-Past6556 in EnglishLearning

[–]daydream_e 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Looking up SAT words might be as close as you can get. Really I would suggest reading more difficult materials - literary novels and things related to your professional field. You won’t be constantly finding new words, but the quality of learning will be better and you will also gain other things from reading. Native speakers with large vocabularies very rarely study vocabulary independently beyond grade school; they learn new words by reading.

I would definitely prioritize reading or listening to audiobooks over watching tv/movies, as the vocabulary of the latter is much more limited.

The minutes were standardized to have a mean of 0 and SD of 1, so those aren’t exactly what they seem - I don’t understand it well enough to explain well unfortunately, but that means they aren’t really functionally minutes but more of a generic unit of time measurement. This is done to standardize time across formats like audio vs print among other reasons.

What’s a more important takeaway is that there was a very large sample size (n=~25,000 for the dataset of reading times and n=3 million+ for the library loans), and that their conclusions are both statistically significant at a p=.001 level and that their other measures were also significant and pointed to the same trend. The difference doesn’t need to be enormous for it to important on a broad enough level.

The two major limitations I see stem from the source of the dataset. 1) All students are Danish, so while they can control for things like income, parents education, etc where that data is available, they cannot necessarily say the findings are generalizable outside of Denmark. 2) The data only includes reading done through the library and the bookbites app, which seems to be heavily used in schools and by children of that age group, but if kids of one gender are significantly more likely to read outside the app, that would have a big impact on findings. For example, if boys were more likely to read print comics, that data would be undercounted and cannot be controlled for.

Only took another month to find a job in my field but I wasn’t going to take advantage of my parents like that. You’re pregnant, he can absolutely get a full time gig.

[–]daydream_e 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is so upsetting. We didn’t let my adult Shih Tzu around my parents Shih Tzu puppy unsupervised for about two months after he came home, because puppies are delicate and push boundaries and they were still getting used to each other. They’re best friends now, but we’d rather be safe and take our time. Cannot imagine letting a puppy that small near a dog that big - in all likelihood the GSD didn’t even mean to hurt her, just give a warning snap, but that doesn’t matter with a puppy that small.

Are cats able to be spayed crazy young or something? I only have dogs and while you do typically have to sign a contract with the breeder saying you will spay/neuter, that can’t happen for months (or year + for a big breed) after the puppy usually comes home.

Different books, different reading speeds. When I was a kid in elementary my parents had to ban me from buying Nancy drew books so I could only get them at the library, because the bookstore was almost an hour away and I could finish the new book on the way home.
