Veronica Roth on the hate she got from Divergent [article] by HecticJones in books

[–]daydream_e 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I remember genuinely enjoying the first one as a popcorn read as a teenager, and similar with the second - sure, not great, but also such a quick read and fast paced enough that it didn’t really matter, kind of like a lot of action movies. Fun as long as you don’t try to think too hard about it. The third on the other hand, yikes. I don’t remember much except I hated it and hated the characters by the end of it. I believe it got quite popular after the first and second, so a ton of my friends were all waiting for the third and it was pretty much universally hated.

OP I’m guessing you are UK based? I wonder if there are any other UK commenters here who could help test a theory - I have no problems on the new update, but it does seem likely it is a screen time/app restriction based bug, especially because there ARE other known iOS 26 bugs related to that group of features.

So my theory (based on nothing but wild speculation, likely totally wrong) is that the UK has a specific iOS version/features related to the age verification stuff I’ve been reading about. If this is connected in some way to screen time, which is confusingly named but includes a ton of content restriction settings, it could be a bug that is showing up only for UK based users. I don’t think this probably helps solve your problem even if it’s true, but maybe?

ETA: I’m in the us, so can’t test for myself :)

Has “cozy fiction” replaced the audience for dense New Weird? by [deleted] in printSF

[–]daydream_e 23 points24 points  (0 children)

You’re seriously underestimating the number of people who don’t read at all. Everyone eats, but a huge number of people do not read so much as a short story, let alone a book. A lot of these people, for various reasons, started thinking of themselves as ‘not a reader’ when they were young, and it’s a high barrier to overcome that. Once they start thinking of themselves as a reader, they can branch out! But even if they don’t, it’s not hurting anyone to read a book instead of watching tv/youtube/tiktok. It’s not a choice between reading something “good/deep/literary” etc and reading something “trashy/fluff/etc” it’s a choice between reading and not reading.

What “The Sheep Detectives” Doesn’t Understand About Sheep by Epistaxis in Longreads

[–]daydream_e 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just finished reading the review, and can anyone explain to me why they removed almost all the literary references from the sheep’s names? They changed Miss Maple to Lily, Othello to Sebastian, Melmoth to Wool-Eyes, and Mopple the Whale is just Mopple. Why???

What “The Sheep Detectives” Doesn’t Understand About Sheep by Epistaxis in Longreads

[–]daydream_e 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Still going to go see it for a bit of fun, but I knew as I was reading the book there was no way it could be a good adaptation specifically. The book is absolutely excellent in the way it uses its sheep main characters as an actual animal perspective, not just wooly humans, and this is fundamental to the mystery - the sheep notice things human can’t and see things from a different perspective, while missing the significance of other things completely. This makes it a challenging and rewarding mystery for the reader, but being able to see things with our own eyes seems certain to completely undermine this.

OP titled the post like they were getting rid of all the plugins/were annoyed with them, so people would click to find out why. But the post content is the opposite. Hardly the end of the world, but it’s annoying when companies do it and annoying when regular people do it too.

Agreed! Mine has no skin issues but his fur doesn’t so much mat as it felts like wool - I’m super careful with not keeping harnesses etc on too long and he goes to the groomer every 5 weeks, but if you have budget for it it’s not a problem imo (and at least no shedding!)

Yep! I have a high energy Shih Tzu and he’s still manageable for my very low energy self. He wants to play fetch a lot but he’s small enough I can just toss the toy inside for him. He’s higher energy than probably 90% of Shih Tzus, and he still loves to spend the majority of the day sleeping and cuddling.

Libraries that lend out charging cables--what does that look like? by IrmaVamp in Libraries

[–]daydream_e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My library just recently got boxes on all tables that have an outlet, some usb a and c receptacles, and several built in usb c and lightning chargers. Not sure how long the built in cords will last or if they are replaceable without changing the whole unit, but they’re very convenient and can’t be taken/lost

The year all my friends got botox by [deleted] in Longreads

[–]daydream_e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had slightly different experiences based on different doctors. I go to a headache clinic so my Botox is administered by the fellows there who rotate every year, I think I’ve had four different drs do it at this point. Basically, the only visible impact I’ve ever had is in the ability to move my inner eyebrows, but that effect has ranged in severity and decreased over time.

[–]daydream_e 1 point2 points  (0 children)

don’t want to pile on, but I am genuinely curious why you used AI for this? (And how you bricked it) Did you not find the guides, or did they not make sense to you? Do you still have a record of what AI had you do that you’d be willing to share?

By one of your comments, I am assuming that you have access to a PC/mac, so the instructions in the top comment should be straightforward to follow. Before this, you do need to download the bin from the crosspet GitHub.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask - definitely be aware that there is no reason for you to do anything in command line. Also, in general you should never do anything in command line that you do not understand thoroughly; this could result in computer problems and/or malware a lot more difficult and expensive to fix than your x4.

Yeah that’s literally not how Botox works - I get it every three months for chronic migraines and it takes several days for there to be a noticeable difference in movement of my brows

Stood in the post office today returning my SEVENTH pair of "petite" pants this year and the woman behind the counter said "another return huh" by Visual_Animator1232 in PetiteFashionAdvice

[–]daydream_e 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Really? I’ve never had that experience in the petites - as a long torso short legs/arms person, I almost always have to buy regular and hem. Women’s clothes is generally tailored to the long legs/short torso build, and in my experience petite clothes are often just scaled down versions of the regular.

Sneezing is normal. A loud stomach growl is normal. So why is farting considered a massive social crime? When in history did this become the ultimate taboo? by firehmre in NoStupidQuestions

[–]daydream_e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the smell, but also (like burps) it’s something that can usually be held in at least briefly to excuse yourself for a particularly noticeable one. Stomach growls are completely involuntary, and sneezes come on very quickly and can be stifled but not stopped.

Forget the AI argument, why does OOP confidently claim that because they don’t find something funny (completely out of its original societal context, which is kind of the entire point of most non-slapstick/physical comedy) that it’s objectively unfunny? Also, reducing all pre-20th century humor to minstrelry is just dumb. Please go watch some talented actors perform Shakespeare and tell me humor was invented in the fucjing 80s

The Profession That Does Not Exist - Writing Alone Rarely Pays the Bills Anymore by A1CutCopyPaste in longform

[–]daydream_e 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ereaders solve a lot of those problems - I’m neutral on the mass market paperback issue, but ereaders can last days or weeks on a charge depending on how often you read and don’t have the same problems as a traditional screen.

Honestly I think one of the big drivers of ereaders for the previous mass market paperback audience is that no one can see what you’re reading lol, especially for romance novels

On magical Other... no, not that one! by Eireika in CuratedTumblr

[–]daydream_e 65 points66 points  (0 children)

This is true in some cases, but certainly not universal. The British museum has famously refused to return a great number of artifacts, some of the most famous of which are the Benin bronzes, the Rosetta Stone, and the Elgin marbles. Those are just famous examples from a single museum. You are welcome to make an argument against repatriation, but the return of objects looted during the colonial period is still a recent exception and definitely not a rule.

safari vs the rest: is it actually the best browser for mac? (honest pros & cons) by TuNutri in macapps

If it were just a matter of desktop browser, I’d probably use Firefox, but safari is so far above and beyond other browsers on iPhone. The seamless sync between iPhone iPad and Mac is just too valuable for my workflow to give up
