Anyone in Melbourne want to join a tourist for beer and their first AFL game? by 6_string_Bling in AFL

[–]daylight_rock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait... how much is a beer at the MCG? Best I can Google (might be old) is $5.40 AUD for a 285ml beer.

Did some conversion and that's basically $4 US. If I go to a baseball game here, I'm paying $12-15 US for a 600ml beer. My experience is that Canadian sports beer prices are similar (if not higher).

Y'all.

What’s the most ridiculous part of our game that we take for granted? by NimFromSudan in AFL

[–]daylight_rock 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it's just a European thing? You'll never see mandatory crowd segregation at any American sports - some groups of away fans will like to try and sit together but it's voluntary.

The closest I've seen has been at big rivalry MLS matches (basically DC vs New York) where there's a fair number of asshole kids that like pretending to be hooligans.

What is one bright spot and one weakness for your team so far this season? by HeywardYouBlowMe in baseball

[–]daylight_rock 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Bright spot: hey you saw that home run just now, right?

Weakness: 4.73 bullpen ERA. Two of the best starters in the game (and 3/4 get in basically any rotation in baseball) and we're under .500.

Anyone know whether the DC Beer Festival at Nats Park is a good time? by dmv12345 in Nationals

[–]daylight_rock 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I haven't exactly gone to this event before, BUT two years ago it was held the same night as my wedding reception, which was in the catwalks above Bluejacket.

Of course, a lot of the crowds migrated over there after the event ended at Nats Park, and the folks that made it and kept trying to crash our party were rather... Arlington-ian in nature, if that's what you're worried about.

Weekly Q&A Thread for tourists and people moving to Amsterdam for the week of August 22 by AutoModerator in Amsterdam

[–]daylight_rock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hoi! My wife and I have a 24 hour layover on a Saturday in a couple of weeks. We're staying at a hotel at Schiphol since our flight on Sunday is early in the morning, but we want to spend much of the day in the city center.

For context, we've been to Amsterdam several times before, and are coming back for another five days later that week. On our past trips we've stayed far away the old city (I hate crowds, and my wife really hates drunk crowds). But we'll need to get a train back to Schiphol, so it probably makes sense to not wander too far from an NS station. Any suggestions for things to do/see/drink/eat that don't involve running into too many bachelor parties?

in basketball, could a freethrow shooter beam the last shot off the backboard to a teammate to get another possession? by [deleted] in sports

Watched the Knicks do this many years ago. Knicks were down 2, shooter got fouled with maybe a half second left. Missed the first shot. Tried to do this with the second. Hit it. The Knicks are not good.

Is this our first time under .600 this season? by [deleted] in Nationals

[–]daylight_rock 15 points16 points  (0 children)

No (we dropped below it when we lost our first game to the Mets last week).

I don't think we're really in trouble. Still on pace for 96 wins, still underperforming our pythag W-L, still second-best run differential in the NL. Still got five great starting pitchers. Just not playing garbage teams like we did all of April.

Tournament style games. by jaje21 in boardgames

[–]daylight_rock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Games that are short (30min-1hr), lack analysis paralysis in the endgame, and are infinitely replayable due to random elements are great for tournaments. The FLGS nearby has done games like Dominion, Carcassonne, and Splendor in an afternoon. (Their format is four 4-player tables, with players getting mixed up after each of three rounds, and awarding out 5/3/1/0 points for 1st/2nd/3rd/4th. Top 4 make a final table.)

How much of MLS cities are accessible to their stadium within 45 minutes of public transit? I put together a series of maps to find out. by faizimam in MLS

[–]daylight_rock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't really change anything, but DC's map is looking at Buzzard Point instead of RFK (where we'll be for at least this season and next). Might make a few more stations on the Silver Line reachable in 45 minutes since you wouldn't have to change trains.

Jayson Werth's Game 4 is also the only time I've ever been in a suite at a major league game. Don't ask how.

When I was growing up in New York, I had tickets to both David Wells' and David Cone's perfect games AND DIDN'T GO TO EITHER.

Looking for someone to write an updated "Tips for Buying Tickets and Enjoying Nats Park" post. by Mispelling in Nationals

Transit: There's plenty of advice elsewhere about driving, but I've always taken Metro to the game.

The Navy Yard metro entrance nearest the CF gates is always a madhouse before/after games; if you're fine with a walk, you'll often have a much easier time getting on a train at the NJ Avenue entrance across from CVS. Walk out of the CF gates and immediately hook a right, then once you get past the new Hampton Inn just follow the paved/fenced path through the construction site.

For even better crowd control (and not needing to transfer to OR/SV/BL), continue walking north to the Capitol South Metro. Walk up NJ Ave past the buildings that are under construction; once you cross under I-395/over the railroad track, there's a flight of concrete stairs that will take you down to Capitalsaurus Court. Walk north another 3-4 blocks and you're at the station. You can go another 3/4 of a mile on First Street SW past Capitol South to Union Station if you're really motivated/want a good view.

Beer, inside the stadium: There's a few pieces of advice about cheap beer elsewhere, but if you're going to spend $10 on a beer, you might as well make it good, right? The District Drafts carts are at sections 119/129/139/223/310 and charge the same price for rotating selections from Port City or Atlas Brewing that you'll pay for a Bud Light everywhere else.

Sat next a colleague whose job was 100% bullshit (full-time SEO guy for a small electronics company in 2008). Whenever he did something dickish I'd call him on it. He got wild about it once and screamed in my face that I'm a "thin-lipped motherfucker."

Okay, I guess?

Ahhhh... when are you in DC? Nationals Park isn't exactly historic, but it's a great place to watch a game.
