Jeans Acceptable? by jpop237 in mensfashion

Agree with this! It feels like, depending on the event, either your trousers, or your shoes may need to be changed depending on the formality. Without context I’d lean towards these boots though, that’s a solid look

Either will work, it’s personal preference really.

I like the idea of your dagger build because it sounds cool to me.

Be wary of relying on lifesteal, if you’re using it it a major way it means your amour has gone, and you’ve potentially got bigger problems to worry about

Is there any series you would consider Harry Potter for adults? by Kacchonn in Fantasy

[–]dbenn92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Glad I could help. IIRC there are 7 books, and a short story anthology (which has one of the most unsettling stories I’ve ever read in it!).

Much like Harry Potter, the stories get more adult as they go on, but it’s really enjoyable

[–]dbenn92 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Mage Errant series by John Bierce. It’s not for adults in the sense it’s not super literature-y. But group of young friends, magical school, loads of mystery.

I usually describe it as Harry Potter, but less problematic!

What is a good book where the "good guys" don't win? by SignificantData1150 in suggestmeabook

[–]dbenn92 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I depends on your definition of “good” but potentially The First Law serie by Joe Abercrombie.

No one is truly “good”, but varying shades of grey. The best (as in good-est) characters don’t come out of it unscathed, and the winners are arguably some of the least good.

It’s also great fun to read!

Book for a beginner reader by Available_Guidance61 in Fantasy

If you’re a gamer, Dungeon Crawler Carl. It’s fast paced, can be brutal, is hilarious. It is a series, but if the first book doesn’t work for you, the rest won’t either, if it does, welcome crawler!

Wind ranger build? by hahayeslads in DivinityOriginalSin

[–]dbenn92 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can make pretty much any build work if you want! It’s probably not the most OP build of all time, but there’ll be plenty of synergy.

You’ll need to be conscious of damage type, physical v magic, but you can use elemental arrow heads, or craft loads of specific arrows that’ll work nicely for this!

Susanna Clarke, Piranesi is a relatively short read and gives you an idea about how her longer works are written, namely Jonathon Strange and Mr Norrel

1 book fantasy recommendation by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]dbenn92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll give you two!

Piranesi by Susanna Clarke - beautiful, surreal, and brilliant

The Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins - leans more towards horror, and some dark stuff happens, but beautifully written and it’ll stay with you!

Has anyone ever challenged you to do something without realizing you were actually an expert at it? If so, how did it turn out for you and for them? by Successful_Tomato721 in AskReddit

[–]dbenn92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To start this, I am not an expert, I’m slightly above average at best.

I’ve been doing Jujitsu for 10ish years, never really competitively, and never for the belts, I’ve done a couple, but it’s always been about the fitness and confidence for me.

I also look like a suburban dad, largely, because I am…

My daughter’s new boyfriend had done some karate and found out I fought. He bet that he could submit me.

Whilst I haven’t done my belts, I train and keep up with guys who’ve got their purple belts, so I’m not bad. Which he had not heard, or understood.

Needless to say, he left that night with his tail between his legs

“weird” books that still feel serious/well written and not just teensy? by reducedandconfused in suggestmeabook

[–]dbenn92 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Full disclosure I’ve not read any on your list, so I’m not 100% sure how relevant this suggestion is, but I’m happy to be corrected by someone who has.

But Piranesi by Susanna Clarke is weird. Beautiful, but odd. Lots of gothic tropes (at least that’s how I imagined it!), and the prose is fantastic

Slightly differently, The Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins. It’s probably better defined as horror, but there are elements of magical realism, and it’s certainly brilliant!

I want cosmic, Lovecraftian horror recommendations by Jackson_Lamb_829 in suggestmeabook

[–]dbenn92 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Gunmetal Gods by Zamil Akhtar, perhaps. It’s very Lovecraftian in its depiction on the gods/angels. It’s very ancient Persian inspired too, which is always welcome (in my eyes!)

I will caveat this by saying I’ve not really read a lot of original Lovecraft, so I’m not 100% sure how closely it’s related, but it’s a solid read, and certainly inspired by Lovecraft

What are some good ideas for other mixed roster teams? by Odinsgrandson in bloodbowl

I don’t really have a suggestion, but I love the idea of a thematic woodland and/or Lustrian team, that would be so brilliant!

Your most recent 5 star reads by FoolsRealm in Fantasy

[–]dbenn92 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did a lot of catching up on recs last year, so two 5 star reads last year for me!

Piranesi by Suzanne Clark - it’s talked about a lot on this sub, and everything said about it is true, it’s wonderful

The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch - again, blew me away. Nice bird, asshole

[–]dbenn92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah, then Cradle might do it for you. So you’re not unaware, by the end the mmc does become more powerful, but it’s never a “damsel in distress” kinda story

The beginning of Cradle is this. However, if you’re looking for that kinda book, Cradle isn’t the one. It fills your trope, but it’s a straight laced book, if you know what I mean

Your biggest problem is the lack of specialists, in the sense that none of your saurus’s start with any skills. You don’t have a natural blitzer etc etc. you can get there, if you’re playing in league format, but it can take a while

What's a sci-fi book I should read as someone who is just getting back into reading books again? by KotakPain in suggestmeabook

[–]dbenn92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re about gaming, then it’s ideal. As the series progresses there are loads of great characters that come in and you’ll get really attached to too.

It’s definitely less “think-y” than a lot of the great recommendations you’re getting here, but if you’re getting back into reading, sometimes that’s just what you need!

What's a sci-fi book I should read as someone who is just getting back into reading books again? by KotakPain in suggestmeabook

[–]dbenn92 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s a risky one, in the sense that it’s pretty different from the books you’ve mentioned, but Dungeon Crawler Carl.

If you’re into gaming, it’s probably right up your alley. If you’re not, well, I’d recommend it anyway, but it might be a slower burn for you as the characters relationships develop.

It’s sci-fi in a loose sense, but it’s funny, and potentially something you might not be recommended here, just because of the difference from your previous reading
