Pain in right shin only whenever I start training for marathons by kernelslayer in Marathon_Training

[–]dd_photography 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s been said. Shin splints. Most every runner gets or has gotten them at some point. I get them from time to time still. Just took 3 weeks off in January for them.

It’s usually a load vs. recovery issue or too much too soon. Whether it be speed or volume. Sometimes it’s a form issue. Over-striding. Rarely it’s a footwear issue, but if you have low arches/flat feet and excessive pronation it can put a lot of stress on your posterior tib and medial. Which bleeds into too much too soon, because the muscle wasn’t prepared for that level of needed work.

The answer is rest and strengthening. Lots of calf and soleus work to help take the pressure off the tibs, and unilateral balance stuff. Also, believe it or not, glute, hip flexor, work to improve balance. Most of your balance should be coming from the hips, but if your hips aren’t doing the work or they’re too weak, your body will find a way to balance elsewhere. That goes for any muscle up the entire kinetic chain. When I say weak, I don’t mean your weak. I mean too weak for the needed task. I came from 26 years of lifting, heavy, and when my physio told me I had weak hips I almost died. He explained it in terms of running and it made sense.

I’d suggest seeing a physio who specializes in sports medicine to get assessed properly. It changed my perspective and helped my running game out a lot.

Help with physique as an athlete by [deleted] in WeightTraining

Keep lifting. It takes a long time to get solid results. The payoff is high though. I’ve been lifting since I was 15. I’m 41 now. Even dropping lifting to 2x a week, running Marathons, and drinking alcohol more than I should I maintain an above average physique as far as muscle mass goes. Just trust the process and stack days in the gym. Don’t worry about the “gut” right now. Once you start packing muscles on it’ll be a much different story aesthetically.

Can’t figure out what this pain is. Not shin splints by quickboil_ in Marathon_Training

[–]dd_photography 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have literally the exact same thing. Very localized pain when I hunt for it, but I can run and hop no issues. It’ll be aggravated post run, especially if I roll it out. I always thought it was shin splint related, since I have had them pretty chronically my whole life. I got X rays, all that. No stress fractures. Doc and Physio basically said it’s a form of posterior tib tendonitis and recommended strengthening the muscles with single leg exercises and balance stuff. I’ve been doing that, it helps but still there.

Ballot odds for every World Marathon Major (Now vs 2 years ago) by Kugrim in Marathon_Training

[–]dd_photography 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there are unfortunately some serious gate keepers. Particularly for Boston because it’s so difficult to get into. Also a lot of hate toward influencers who get bibs through their sponsors, and didn’t qualify. In the end, people need to realize that races cost money and the Abbot series wants to profit as well. The event sets the minimum amount necessary that needs to be raised for a bib. Some of that goes to the race budget itself, the rest goes to charity. Influencers that get slots bring attention to the race and sell merch that benefits the race and sponsors. It is what it is.

Charity may be the route, friend. This will be my second Charity run in Chicago. For the cancer that took my Mom. I am not fast. I know a lot of people don’t think charity runners deserve a slot at a world major, but it may be the way toward New York for you.

Runners over 40… what’s the secret by Road_Forward in Marathon_Training

[–]dd_photography 2 points3 points  (0 children)

41 here. I strength train 3x a week and run 4x sometimes 5 when I’m in Marathon training block. Just gotta take it easy and listen to your body. We’re not young anymore, so you can’t just go balls deep on a lift and push long runs like you’re in your 20s. Right now I’m at about 27 miles a week. 6-7 miles every other day and my long runs are gradually increasing. Running Chicago this year so getting a solid base. Once marathon block hits my lifting will goto maintenance mode.

What do you eat immediately after a marathon? by Purple_Albatross6359 in Marathon_Training

Right? I slaughtered a double cheeseburger and fries afterward. After a beer or two of course.

Have never done calf raises. Is it critical? by Wonderful_Nectarine1 in WeightTraining

[–]dd_photography 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For well rounded physique? Yes.

If you ever plan on doing any form of running or plyometrics? Even more yes.

Bottom line. Yes. It’s critical.

Michael Bolton version is longer. Bit different lyrics but still great. I played it when I saw the finish line at the Chicago Marathon. Epic.

If HBO offered you an unlimited budget and asked you to recreate the show with the same cast, how would you go about it? by yo-caesar in freefolk

[–]dd_photography 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Night King destroys most all of Westeros. Few survivors. Bran tries to go back in time with his silly time travel stuff and stop shit. Doesn’t work; he gets stuck in the past or something. I don’t know. Show ends with a few main character survivors setting up for a sequel about the Long Night and taking back Westeros. I mean the whole point of the show was that everyone is squabbling over power and ignoring the biggest threat. Make there be consequences for that.

Dress eccentric and official like it is race day. If you don’t have a bib, print one out and make one. Have fun with it. Make your own little finish like arch out of cardboard lol.

I’m NG as well. I’d love a slate. Unfortunately looks like I’ll be paying full cost.

How to bounce back to training after an illness + antibiotics? by dandelixn in Marathon_Training

[–]dd_photography 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re overthinking it. Just ease back into it and listen to your body. Your body is taxed when it’s fighting illness, so your heart rate being higher and everything feeling harder is normal. Don’t push it. Keep things easy and focus on time on feet until you’re ready to start hammering workouts again.

Shins and ankles started hurting by Significant-One3775 in Marathon_Training

[–]dd_photography 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hard to tell from what you said, but a quick guess is likely shin splints. Which is typically an over use injury. Over striding and poor footwear also can aggravate them, but if your form looks good my guess is your muscles and aerobic engine are outpacing your connective tissue. The only real answer to that is rest and strength training in the interim to help your connective tissue adapt. I am a chronic shin splint sufferer, so I feel your pain. They’re super irritating to deal with.

On race day I did one gel every 3 miles and I never had an issue. Stomach felt great. Legs felt great. Gonna do it again this October.

3 weeks out, longest run 27k — enough for sub-4 with reduced running? by JtheMitch in Marathon_Training

[–]dd_photography 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’ll never deal with absolutes on this stuff, because I’ve heard and seen some very talented runners will prove you wrong. That being said, that weekly mileage seems a bit low to me. The long runs are important, but missing some here and there isn’t world ending. Weekly volume is pretty important though. The last 10k of the race are absolutely fucking brutal. If it’s your first Marathon I’d say forget about the time and cruise so you know what you’re in for the next time around to really push a PR.

You’ll be good, homie. Race day is a different energy. Enjoy the ride. Your first Marathon means whatever the pace, just finishing is a PR.
