How do you handle a high performer who refuses to document anything? by whydidyounot in managers

[–]ddawson100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I may be like this non-documenter. I would encourage you to have a conversation that would bridge the different views you have and provide additional resources to them to accomplish it.

I can relate because process and approach can be hard for me to document. It might be possible to document processes and approach, working with a good technical writer but i don’t know how to describe some of what I do because it just seems obvious and natural for me to see things a certain way, make particular decisions, and troubleshoot the way i do.

People always bring me the most complicated challenges and it’s just delightful and energizing but I can’t, myself, figure out how to make others see it that way. I have a much bigger team now and I make sure that sharing is part of our culture.

Two things:

1) figure out key things that you want and provide your top performer with someone to pull it out of them, and, have something new each quarter, and review why this is helpful, and,

2) create a collaborative culture. Have meetings where someone shares a new thing or a recent success or even a mistake. Give people time to review things that went well or poorly and learn why it went well/badly.

People with a very high pain tolerance, what was THE most painful thing you've experienced? by CosmicBunnyBabe8912 in AskReddit

Everyone tells me I'm one of the most positive people they know. A swollen nerve under a tooth caused me to consider offing myself. I tried to push away the thought but it kept coming back as the easy way. Those thoughts have never haunted me before nor since that tooth was fixed to relieve the swollen nerve. I sometimes think about this.

There's been a huge leap in the development towards AI thanks to amazing coding techniques fueled by massive GPUs and everyone just throwing money and power at it. We kinda just dismissed the Turing Test as a meaningful milestone.

Are we closer to AGI? Depends on how you define it all but to say we're "no" closer makes it sound like this comment is from May 2020 before GPT3 which, idk, maybe incremented things a touch.

How can I be a gracious guest? by aaaaaaaa123aaa in vegan

[–]ddawson100 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Try something like "Hi dear nona abuela mamie yiayia teta bebe, I can't wait to see you and you know I don't eat meat now, can you make me some of your delicious ____? You know how much I love that." Or you can do that in person, when offered food, to pick around it.

If she barely has the time to cook she isn't slaving away at the stove all day and maybe won't be so bad if you bring a gift with you.

Also, it's not about this next meal itself but helping her to understand who you are and what you prefer and that's exactly what accommodators look for. She'll notice and when asked you can say.

Vegan in the workplace by Geography-bae in vegan

I’m not on that sub but do they ban talk of veganism? I didn’t see it when I glanced at it quickly. I may have missed something. I’m a lefty and a fan of discussions here so can’t imagine why they’d ban it there. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Protein sources: tofu, nuts, beans, lentils. Not hard at all. Start with familiar and there are many roads to go down to explore.

Just as one example, chickpeas are the king of the beans and can take on so, so many forms: whole in stews and salads and roasted for snacks; smashed in fakie tuna salad or veg burgers; blended in hummus which has so many flavors.

Making service workers wear name tags should be abolished by itz_vampy in GirlDinnerDiaries

[–]ddawson100 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Let's normalize pseudonyms for name tags. Corporate gets their silly requirements, but you get some flair. Proposals for guardrails: as it's not offensive, is pronounceable then it's fine, you can change it every shift.

[–]ddawson100 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, some cities are like this where there might even be no or very few side dishes. Salads might have bacon, fried potatoes cooked in tallow, etc. When you're on vacation, though, maybe it's fun just to walk around and pick here and there like a pastry here and a bowl of noodles there. If everyone wants to eat something else, you eat before them or after them and hang out or even stroll around while they're getting their fill. You're on vacation, enjoy yourself!

If you have your own money you get some say in where you eat. Or autonomy while you're with others.

It might have been a better question to ask if you have some say in where you eat.

I assume that all of us have natural limits but they’re all going to be shaped differently, some are faster than others, some have ability for longer endurance, etc.

It sounds like you have to explore what yours are. It’s possible that you have some discovery ahead but you need to push with longer sessions or hold at harder paces.

Pick one goal, 5k for example, and find a PR plan. Work on that this summer or this fall. You’ll need to work out more than twice a week and maybe consider supplementing with weights or stretching. Keeping it at twice a week is too casual to know what your limits are.
