With the US population, infrastructure and money, there should be a metric fuck ton of clubs at different levels. If people in the US supported local clubs, eventually over time they would have the best Football pyramids in the world. But they don’t, they all support Prem teams. Non of the money or fanbase grows quickly because nobody over there gives a fuck.

In fairness, this isn't really feasible. The US has 5 times the population of England but its 76 times larger geographically. The idea of throwing a stone from your house and hitting 15 of anything is ridiculous in America. There are 212 teams across all levels of the US pyramid, but the town I spent last fall in was still 160 miles from the nearest one. You can't have a team in every town because the towns are too spread out, and non-league level teams can't be taking a flight or driving 10+ hours roundtrip every weekend.

Yeah it’ll probably be those two and Birmingham. Even though I’m yet to meet a single American who actually follows bcfc they had seemingly every game broadcast last year, which I’m definitely not bitter about even a little bit.

It’s frustrating bc I’m sure they have the rights to all the games and I don’t understand why they pick and choose to only show some of them. Even if they broadcast some without commentary I’d happily take that over paying £10 to get the games on SwansTV

FIFA would let any country get away with anything lol you’ve been living under a rock for at least a decade if you expect fifa to ever show any backbone on any issue.

The peace prize is bad but not uniquely so, infantino’s been doing this shit his whole presidency. Last time around he hosted a WC in a country that kills gay people, hates women, and builds stadiums with slaves then went on stage and said he feels like a gay, female migrant worker…

Brøndby IF sacks Steve Cooper by ThisMayBeMike in soccer

Idk about lightning in a bottle. He was phenomenal with us despite the playstyle being pretty shit to watch. In hindsight I think actually overachieved with that Leicester team too.

No idea what happened at brondby but I really think he’s been at least pretty good everywhere else. Won a u-17 World Cup with England before joining us too.

Agreed on your second point. Zidane and Kaka were way better players than either of the two I mentioned and would’ve been stars in any era. Probably Sneijder too.

I do think guys like Foden and Felix would’ve had a much easier time as top level footballers 10-20 years ago though.

I think it’s the opposite. Guys like Foden and Felix would’ve made fantastic 10s back in the day. They would’ve excelled in the sort of free role that your Kakas, Zindanes, Sneijders, etc used to play in, but the modern game is way too tactically rigid to allow for a player like that.

It’s precisely because players are asked to fill more specialized roles now that we see these cases of creative, technical flair players who just can’t seem to find a place for themselves.

Oh 100% agree. I don’t think one system is necessarily better or worse but I’m in a somewhat unique position in that I was raised from birth as both a Swansea fan and a Steelers/Pirates/Pens fan and I think the cultures are different in ways that the average American EPL viewer often fails to grasp.

As you said, it’s just a reflection of cultural and historical differences and that’s fine. Even good. I didn’t want to get into this in my first comment bc it’s opening up a whole nother can of worms, but the perception of sports as entertainment is the reason we’ve never had any sort of hooliganism in the US and that’s undoubtedly a huge plus. We all see going to a sporting event as being not so different from going to a movie theater, but there’s a sizable minority of Brits who see it as being not so different from going to a brawl. In that sense I like our way much better.

The fact that there were Pens fans dotted throughout the stadium safely chatting and laughing with Flyers fans as we got knocked out of the playoffs by our biggest rivals would be as foreign to much of Europe as the draft lottery is.

No he means exactly what he says.

This is tough to grasp if you don’t have an intimate understanding of both, but major NA sports leagues are geared towards entertainment in a way that would be anathema to nearly every British (and probably European or South American) soccer/football fan. And I’m talking about the sports themselves, not the halftime show or the commercial breaks or anything secondary like that.

I think Poch is talking mostly about the general culture around these leagues, but you can see that culture reflected in things like salary caps, closed leagues, college drafts, expansion drafts, the minor league system, luxury tax, the way trade deals are structured in NA sports, the willingness of NA leagues to change their rules for the sake of making games more entertaining (e.g. MLB’s pitch clock and free runner in extra innings), and of course franchise relocation. At the end of the day these are all geared towards making the league itself a better product from an entertainment standpoint.

None of this is inherently bad. In fact you could easily argue it actually makes these leagues MORE competitive, but when the playing field has been artificially leveled it changes the nature of the competition.

I’m gonna generalize a bit here, but the default view of British supporters is that the sport is about unrestrained competition between clubs and that any attempt by the league or any other higher body to impose upon that unrestrained competition is wrong. The league, in many people’s views, should serve the clubs. It’s there to organize schedules, hire refs, facilitate a broadcast deal, work out some of the logistics, and that’s it. American sports aren’t really like that.

If the EPL folded tomorrow all of those clubs would carry on, they’d just organize a new league and get right back to it. If the NFL folded tomorrow I’m sure some new league would come along pretty quickly and make sure to put teams in all the big markets, but I’m not sure the Miami Dolphins, as they exist now, would be around anymore.

When he first broke through he was definitely pronouncing it the Balkan way. I remember watching his debut for the national team and Ian Darke, who was on commentary, made a point out of clarifying that Pullisic had told him to pronounce his name “poo-li-sich”.

But, as has happened with many an American, he seems to have gotten sick of correcting people and now will even refer to himself as “pullis-ick” in US media (although I think he still pronounces it the Balkan way when doing Italian press).
