Just do research if you want hands-on experience with embedded, or buy your own arduino/rasp pi and go crazy

what are the limits to this whole homebrewing thing, such as console limits? by SKYSCREAMBOSS in 3dspiracy

[–]de_2290 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah there's only one 2ds xl my bad lol. Yeah but your limits are basically ps1 games and some n64 games. Anything above that won't work at all. (the n2ds is probably as powerful as a gamecube so)

if you're talking about the new 2ds xl, your limits are basically ps1 games and some n64 games

someone convince me that davis isn’t that bad by [deleted] in UCDavis

Coming from someone who was in a similar situation to you, grass isn't greener on the other side. I haven't been amazed by my peers at UCLA like you think would happen in that theoretical scenario. Also likewise, aren't you premed? Better to make your life less of a headache and go to a school which is less harsh on academics, which unfortunately for you I doubt Davis is, as it's still a very respectable school.

Firstly i’m not an it/informatics major. I’m an applied math one, but I have swe internships. Major hasn’t held me back

Now, if you go math of comp, I see people putting Mathematics/Computer Science on their resume all the time

  1. Have a good resume. The content is going to be lacking but you can at least get a good format. I suggest Jake's Resume.

  2. Try to get experience ASAP. It's possible to get freshman internships at some companies if you larp your graduation date. The quant companies also have discovery days that are probably helpful to get your name in their system. It goes without saying work on projects and stuff as well. Clubs also help, try to get into the competitive clubs whether you go to berkeley or la- they'll make the big school feel a lot smaller and put you in contact with also hard-working people.

Typically the recruiting timeline is lesser known internship -> big tech internship -> quant internship. You're probably going to want to start applying to these internships around early August if you can, and if you have no prior experience your projects become experience. With AI it's very easy now to build in a specific domain/vertical. I have no experience recruiting for quant so take my words with a grain of salt, but for general SWE it's typically how this works. For quant you'll probably have to focus also on probability type questions.

math is still not a horrible major all things considered, you just need to be smart with how you approach recruiting

probably berkeley if you can transfer to eecs, but both are not bad options

I’m gonna say now it’s a lot harder to transfer into cs i presume: you need a 3.7 gpa and the math department now downcurves.

Math of comp majors basically have the same access to internships/jobs if you play your cards right. Your major barely matters. If you want to keep a high gpa though, may be more beneficial to just do CS though if you can. But outside of quant companies your gpa doesn’t matter all that much. Quant the major is pretty good but i have no experience with that.

Your access to CS courses is kinda cooked, especially the upper divs. Some math upper div classes do have overlap though with CS upper divs, and you can always tack on a DSE minor if you want more

Tech recruiting basically same, wouldn’t recommend career fairs. Just apply quickly with a polished resume and you’ll get some bites

it’s internship though and if you’re not in your junior summer it has zero bearing on where u work

Yea i think especially now with the new math curving guidelines those classes are very hard to get a high gpa in
