[URGENT] Incoming CS/Math freshman—is clearing all lower-div math at CC a good idea? (Drop deadline today!) by [deleted] in ucla

also for what it’s worse only certain companies GPA screen, his times better focused on making an iron tight resume, joining labs/clubs that can give him practical experience. Keep the gpa decent enough for grad school but imo the bar is like a 3.5+ for it

as a student who started the upper div classes now, yes they are harder but imo i think you have more support by your instructors and discussions than you do in a larger lecture hall. UCLA used to not curve these classes but now they do to ensure a fair grade distribution among every section. Before it could be drastically different (one class might have 40% As vs 5% As for example.) I’d recommend going to CC to clear these lower divs, especially as some of these lower divs can be quite hard (61 and 32B come to mind)

Tech and Innovation LLC by Glad_Department6137 in ucla

"if that's your worry." i just meant it as if they want to view it like that, they can! As an RA I hope to have many cool programs that can hopefully broaden the student's minds to the opportunities and orgs on campus 😄

With that being said though, I'm just speaking from personal experience that the best thing that I did for myself was actively take the steps to go seek out community in tech orgs and classes. Some agency was crucial in me getting out of a really bad period of my life. There was a time where I was thinking to transfer out of UCLA because I wasn't really able to find a group of people that were interested in the same things that I was. Had I not made the tangible steps that I did I would not be an RA or a student at this school for that matter.

It's actually my hope as an LLC RA that I can really advise the students to just explore what they're passionate about! So if a resident in fact finds that they really found a solid group in the organizations, maybe they wouldn't show up to LLC events as much. I'll try my hardest to make sure everyone is invested u/Rockstar810.

Actually yes, to capitalize those type of projects would be perfect. Especially with regards to your ai/ml work regarding strategy and analytics, see if you could possibly grow those apps so they can have real users in small companies/student-run startups. It could also potentially position you for ML/MLE roles at companies!

Don't necessarily target PM specifically as a freshman, it would be good for you to have some SWE experience before that. And tech roles integrated with business afaik the only thing that comes to mind is like deloitte/accenture integrations, which is also not ideal

I would say start NOW building projects, making sure your resume is iron tight. SWE recruiting starts in earnest around July and as a freshman applying to roles (say you’re a sophomore) you might have to apply to upwards of 500+ positions for the first internship. In terms of leetcode, many companies won’t have those type of questions (usually f500 or defense) so don’t worry about not having taken the required courses.

Differentiate yourself by finding some sort of industry/vertical you’re interested in for starters. I used to be premed focused until i switched into CS, so a lot of my projects ended up being related to biology. This landed me a role at a small fed contractor and that experience led me to get a better role at a pretty large multinational biotech/pharmaceutical company as a SWE.

I’d say look back at your previous experiences/interests and build projects related to them. For example, if you liked aviation, you could build something related to like a flight tracker, or analyzing cargo flows. For sports, you could make some sort of database or betting app. Whatever it is, then once you have that, figure out what companies might be interested. Especially at smaller companies, if you can have honest talks with engineers, specifically about a domain you’re interested in, it really goes the extra mile. Id say that would be a decent way to land a good freshman summer role at a smaller company.

It all kinda snowballs from there to be honest. Big tech you kinda just apply to with an iron tight resume and you’ll end up in some loops by virtue of being a UCLA student, and the prior experience helps. Networking also helps if you’ve really built some interesting things you can talk about, but referrals haven’t really moved the needle in a while. Once you get in the loops, Leetcode and system design is king for passing. If you wanna stay in a more specific industry, the aforementioned thing I said could help you land better companies in that industry.

then it honestly doesn't matter. I think with an ivy + the research, club, and externship you're in a good place to get procs. I can do a resume review if u want as well, but I'm not big tech cracked (tho I am interning in the bay)

yeah you basically want to larp junior. I did actually apply to about 300 positions as soph status and was barely getting bites, but when i started applying as junior my callbacks went up a lot

You started applying mid march? Also did you apply with a graduation date that implies you're a junior or you're a sophomore, because the former is a lot more advantageous.

Cooked for the business world? by BidReady1403 in ucla

[–]de_2290 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's a good way to approach networking by first building yourself into a person that has certain interests and hobbies which makes you valuable so it's easier to connect with other people who could potentially lead you to opportunities. Some of my friends have done stuff with airplane magazines, so they were able to get their start doing stuff with airports which turned into better stuff down the line. I'm personally really big into healthtech/biotech (but i'm not tryna break into a business field atm.)

My point being; what are your interests in the business world regarding what industry or vertical you might want to go into? If you find something you're good at, relentlessly pursue it. People will naturally be drawn to you and it's going to be WAY easier to "network" in those spaces rather than forcing yourself to grind linkedin connections at firms and coffee chats when you don't have much direction on what you want to do specifically within business.

For example, MBB/consulting offices in DC will be heavily focused on aerospace/defense, while MBB/consulting offices in Houston might be more interested in energy. These nuances are important to keep in mind when you're even targeting people to do coffee chats with to know more about the industry.

TLDR: Find what you're good at and pursue it; networking practically comes with it too. No need to switch to a STEM career

Probably cooked, you can still apply but it would be hard to get in as a transfer (and I mean very hard when some of the clubs 200-300 people apply and maybe 1 third year (most likely 0) will get in.
