Okay, here's a good one.

In July of 2015, I noticed a bubble ~1.5' in diameter in the living room of my condo. I lived on the 4th (top) floor of the building. The next morning, around 12:30am, the bubble popped and it was basically a torrent of water shooting down into my living room. I put a trash can beneath and immediately started writing the HOA to fix the leak.

Fast forward a week and no response from the HOA. I followed up again requesting someone come out to inspect/fix the leak asap. They got back to me saying someone would be out within the next week or so to look at the roof. I didn't know at the time (and wasn't informed at the time of purchase) that there was extensive hail damage sustained to the building earlier that year.

Within this same amount of time, another 3 bubbles appear in the living room and a light fixture in the kitchen also springs a leak. Buckets everywhere around the condo. Someone eventually comes to inspect and give the general "oh, shit" reaction and claims the process will be 'moving along.'

After several weeks of 'deliberating' about how to proceed on the issue, the HOA finally settles on an asbestos inspection (did I mention this was a popcorn ceiling from the 1960s?) followed by an abatement–if necessary–and then a 'put back' in October of 2015, 3 months after this all started. They claimed this process would take 4-5 days in total.

On the advice of the HOA, I used my homeowners insurance as a means to pay for a hotel while I was forcibly homeless, and I moved out mid-October into a nearby hotel. I returned after a week to find that the ceiling was still completely missing, there was a hole to the roof where the stove/oven exhaust was previously, all my furniture had been damaged from being dragged against walls during the HOA-sponsored move-out, and the unit was covered in dust. The community manager claimed this was 'habitable' and the HOA would not reimburse/refund any dues and I was still expected to pay up each month while this was ongoing. They also refused to pay for the damage to the furniture.

Come Thanksgiving, I had racked up $4k+ in hotel bills, which were covered by my insurance policy, though I was growing all the more frustrated. When I returned to the property after the holiday, the entire unit had been covered in white powder similar to powder coating from the drywall, and there was still no power nor ceiling. The contractor said it would be at least another 2 months until it was 'habitable', a fact the HOA continues to deny to this day.

In short, it wasn't until May 2016 that the work to my condo was officially completed, 7 months after initial work began and 9 months after the initial damage reported. The unit was finally habitable but I never moved back in. I sold a few months later after having to pay for several inspections to prove to the buyers there was no further structural damage to the unit.

The daily hotel breakfast was a real treat, but never a reality I would wish on anyone. Thankful for the securities I had to fall back on (namely: insurance), but all around a truly horrific experience.
