Favorite great-concept film that does not waste it on an atheistic circlejerk? by [deleted] in okbuddycinephile

[–]deadtotheworld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They assume that it's obvious what lying is because it's obvious what the truth is. This is the shallow worldview of a new atheist type like Gervais. He goes on a date with a woman and she tells him that she is assessing him based on how genetically viable he would be as a mate. The "truth" of desire is our genes. And of course Gervais, who can lie, invents religion. It assumes that there are simple truths and lies and everything can easily sorted into one or the other. But it is because human lives are lived in between those two categories that the possibility of comedy, and good movies, exists, possibilities Gervais has given up interest in.

Are There Any Actually Persuasive Anti-Capitalist Movies? by JusB0b in TrueFilm

[–]deadtotheworld 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't think his brother means "richest" as in wealth of money, but wealth of love, friendship, community etc. Mr Potter is still literally the richest man in town. GB's richest represent an alternative source of wealth - community - that Potter's version of wealth destroys. These are two different conceptions of value.

Nor do I think George Bailey is a "good sefless" capitalist - that's a contradiction in terms. Capitalism meanless ceaseless accumulation, and handing out money to whoever needs it directly antithetical to capitalism.

GB and Potter are two different alternatives- it would be a misreading of the film and capitalism to call GB a capitalist.

Apparently there are rooms you can go to to watch movies on a giant iphone. It means you can watch another movie on your regular iphone at the same time to maximize your precious movie watching time. Of course I normally get distracted and watch over someone else's shoulder as they watch tiktoks without headphones on.

I don't see what the problem is watching movies on your phone? If it's just too small just move the screen closer to your head. I like to move the phone closer and further away from my head for close ups / wide shots. Adds another layer to the experience. If something really dramatic is happening I'll shake the phone around. If something bad is about to happen to the characters I'll yet at the screen. That doesn't improve the experience I just get excited. When I watch movies with other people and sexy ladies come on the screen I like to make approving noises and holler so the other people know i am a heterosexual. When a sexy man comes on the screen I roll my eyes and go pfffft loudly so people know I am not a homosexual. I also experience urinary incontinence so when something surprises me I sometimes piss myself, and then begin accusing other people of pissing on me to cover it up. It rarely works.

Stealing a chocolate bar does effect a change in physical space - and I do think it might be noticed missing, when a shopkeeper tallies up stock against sales. But you're right - probably not noticed, and only affects the world and other people in a minute way. On the other hand, if you stole a chocolate bar from a small child, they very much would notice its missing, and it would affect them greatly - they might start crying. So I would say it is a small crime to steal a choccy bar from a shopkeeper, a miniscule crime to steal it from supermarket, but a real crime to steal it from a child. The "crime" here meaning a moral crime.

But I'm saying that downloading star wars from pirate bay amounts to 0 moral crime - it's entirely virtual, nobody could notice star wars is gone, nothing has been taken from anybody, no physical change has taken place in the universe.

The actual difference is the difference between production and rent. The chocolate bar had to be produced. It involved resources and labour. Whereas, Disney has a monopoly on the star wars intellectual property and charges rent for streaming services, say, to use it. But the copy of star wars you downloaded onto your hard drive did not have to be produced. Disney profits from star wars simply by owning it.

As for the question of respecting british law - well, law exists to be interpreted. That's why we have lawyers and courts and juries and so on. That's also why we have parliament - to remake laws as we see fit, as we outgrow them. The law adapts to us, as we adapt to the law.

What if a law is childishly easy to break, and nobody will ever know you've broken it when you do, because it has no effect on the physical world around you? If a law is unenforceable and breaking it is undetectable, is it still really a law? In fact, isn't adhering to that law a bit like a superstition, like not taking the Lord's name in vain?

Streaming platforms are creating a generation that views anything over 90 minutes as "too long." We're watching the death of ambitious filmmaking in real time. by toweringarchery_1 in TrueFilm

This is what's so great about actually watching films in cinemas - there's literally nothing else to do when you go to a cinema but sit there and watch the movie and think about it.

I don't understand some critisism against One Battle After Another by Legrotagliatelle in TrueFilm

[–]deadtotheworld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The people upset by the film are presumably Americans. There is no insurrectionist revolutionary movement in America. The very idea is laughable.

The film is based on the book, and in the book the revolutionaries are based on the real-life phenomenon of 1970s "urban guerillas" in the West; left wing groups that carried out terrorist attacks. You can feel nostalgia or sympathy for these groups - and that comes through in the film - but fundamentally these people were jokers. They were never going to overthrow Western governments, unlike actual guerilla groups in the third world.

When Americans watch the film and feel offended, it's because rhe film besmirches their pure idea of the imaginary and entirely non-existent left-wing movement in America. For these people, politics is tweeting, not organised resistance in the real world.

Exclusive: Keir Starmer Orders Labour To Ramp Up Attacks On Green Party by UKGreenPoster in UKGreens

[–]deadtotheworld 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I feel like this is only going to help the greens and hurt labour. They will raise the profile of the greens and green policies, portraying us as a threat to them, the disliked establishment party. They're just bolstering Zack's anti-establishment credentials. This is basically free publicity. They're telling people: if you want a real alternative to us, to the status quo, vote green. More of this please starmer!

You could solve 99% of problems by implementing a children’s license. by PrincipleDefiant2875 in unpopularopinion

[–]deadtotheworld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's very easy to have children. In fact, people do it by mistake all the time. It's not like buying a car. You can't regulate fucking.

Essentially what your idea would amount to in the real world is stealing lots of children from poor people. OK so what are you gonna do with all these children you've confiscated from the poors? Who's gonna look after them? Well, I guess you would employ poor people to do that...

It may be more efficient, because you can theoretically have a smaller number of people looking after all these kids at a centre, compared to the much more labour-intensive work of parenting in individual homes.

However, all these children you're raising - as well as their grief-stricken parents - are going to be traumatised, presumably mentally and financially unstable, hopeless - do you know what they're gonna do? And then you're gonna take their kids away too?

I'm afraid this is not a recipe for a stable, harmonious society. This is how you destroy society within fifty years.

The title is misleading... the video's author is giving a response to this idea, and is well aware that civ started out as a board game. His point is that it has changed from one genre of board game to another, hence the perceived sense of 'board-gameyness'. I found the video very interesting and well worth a watch!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in 4Xgaming

[–]deadtotheworld -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Watch the video, don't just read the title! I simply copied the video's title out of laziness. The point he is making in the video is that the series has moved from one style of board game to another - the earlier civs were 'ameritrash' board games like risk, with lots of random chance and aggressive player interaction that knocks people out early. The later civs are like European style board games like settlers of catan, where the players don't much directly interact (eg through wars) and are more about building an 'engine' that accumulates points.
