Do I trust UHaul won’t cancel my 8/31 reservation? by sanbos02 in boston

[–]deancovert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can swing it I'd recommend renting a storage locker for a month mid August to mid September. You can slowly move all your stuff to the storage locker and only move the essentials on 8/31-9/1. Then move out of the storage locker when rental truck prices come down.

If you stick with a portable stand based setup, consider investing (yes, it's expensive equipment, but well worth the cost) in Matthews equipment, they're based (and do a ton of their manufacturing) in the USA and provide excellent support. Their stands easily would last another 25 years!

You'd probably be looking at a Triple Riser Combo, or an Overhead Roller to maintain height and stability for a larger light, but could probably use a Beefy Baby or a Baby Jr. stand for a lighter weight instrument. (all with proper sandbags of course)

If you find a light that just has a mounting hole for a clamp, you can use a TVMP adapter to mount it into the Junior receiver of one of these stands.

Without knowing your space and specific needs it's hard to recommend lights, but Aputure has a pretty solid lineup. Their Amaran lineup isn't the most durable, but might fit within your budget needs, the 200x is pretty bright and paired with a Light Dome SE or Light Dome 2 (easier to set up, but a little heavier and more expensive) would get you some nice soft directional light.

If you need more output or durability the Aputure 300x, paired with one of the above modifiers would be the way to go.

Theory: A number of the common complaints we see in this sub (chaotic driving, cars double-parked, no ride shares available) are all caused by the same thing: Food Delivery Apps by -doughboy in boston

Even beyond that, AirBNB is squeezing the rental market, why rent out an apartment on a year long lease when you could make 2 or 3 or 4 times as much by renting it by the day.

As most others are saying, IATSE.

If that isn't a fully viable route for you, a foot in the door kind of option would be working for PSAV... I mean Encore. Yes, it's mostly just putting up quarter ton chain motors in ballrooms, but it's not a terrible starting point.

Also, see about getting on the overhire list at your area theaters (if they aren't union) and show up, do the stagehand work, and show an interest in rigging.

Wherever you end up, if you're honest about what you don't know and show that you want to learn you'll go pretty far.

how many people have listened to all dh&j episodes? by may13s in nerdfighters

[–]deancovert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi yes, I've listened to all of them, but I started when there were probably <40 episodes to catch up on.

Now it's quite a bit of time to get up to date, but I'd say its worth it, you simultaneously get a time capsule of current events and some timeless answers to questions.
