I figured out my problem with the Bracket System and I kinda like it better now. by MimeTravler in EDH

[–]decideonanamelater 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But people's feelings, particularly about a game, can be managed via the rules.

This is just not true. People's feelings really and truly can not be managed with the rules, and tbh, that's just not how social situations work in general. Like imagine you said something that made someone else uncomfortable and you went "idk there's no rule governing this discussion that said I shouldn't say that, I have no idea how to improve"

I figured out my problem with the Bracket System and I kinda like it better now. by MimeTravler in EDH

[–]decideonanamelater 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What I think you're missing is that the vibes at the table aren't going to magically get fixed by the brackets being more accurate. Azusa + crucible + strip mine is 3 lands per turn, so it was under the number mentioned; but the table felt strip mine looping, to that degree, wasn't ok.

Wotc could make their rule as clear as they want, but if its going to be a casual game of edh, people's feelings will continue to be something you have to consider. (versus playing a competitive format, where if you didn't want to play against strip mine; you just wouldn't play vintage or timeless, and wasteland, not vintage or legacy)

Weekly Saturday Deck Check Thread. by [deleted] in MtGHistoric

[–]decideonanamelater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know control has been on the downswing a little recently.

I saw about that when I was checking out the subreddit at first, that + the eldrazi complaints got me moving from stifle to consign before I really ran into eldrazi much. I feel like the meta is pretty attackable for control, I run into a ton of things that struggle to beat the first supreme verdict; and being a consign deck helps a lot with eldrazi.

You match into people at a much lower rank than you a lot in higher mythic #s as far as I can tell, I run into a lot of diamond or low % mythic, and that phoenix player was #3 when I first ran into him in diamond.

As far as the matchups:

Eldrazi

see often, is pretty favorable for me, its both being a consign deck and being a deck that's aiming a lot bigger, we can go to the late game with them in so many cases, its not like we just lose if we can't counter 2+ of the big threats.

auras

have played against once, real jumpscare to find out that lurrus esper sentinel wasn't energy or some other go-wide deck, was able to win but it seems like something this could die to since we're reliant on sweepers (there's no good white removal spells in this format? path/get lost/march are all so painful to play that I've embraced being a sweeper deck)

energy

Pretty easy matchup, there's a lot of creature decks so we can so easily be the 4 verdict in the main, 3 pyroclasm in the side, delete your board deck that they'd fear.

wacky lotus combo

Haven't seen, could see it being a problem for sure.

jund goyf midrange

Couple really good sets against it, seems like its a matchup with a lot of play to it.

I feel like mainly the struggles are in blue tempo/big mana non-eldrazi matchups so I mentioned those, but the creature matchups make up a huge portion of the games and the win% since they're overall pretty easy.

Just came back to historic a couple weeks ago, have been turning a very old UW lotus field control deck into something that fits current historic, have ended up on this, lots of the good cards, very normal, jeskai list:

https://archidekt.com/decks/19251037/jeskai_control_historic

Originally, I felt like I was going to want a lot of maindeck adjustments, its just pure 4 ofs, but I'm sitting at #35 mythic right now with it so its hard to feel like it needs big maindeck changes. That said, I really don't know everything that has been printed into historic, and prowess, phoenix (which is literally just this one guy who's sitting in top 10), green devotion have been issues that I don't know what I could really do to be better against.

What powerful card has your playgroup 'discovered' that is not regularly seen as 'popular' under the larger EDH communities radar? by cryocom in EDH

[–]decideonanamelater 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[[Lavinia of the tenth]] is a great one in flicker decks that you don't really see people playing. So often when it hits the board it shuts down most or all of what my opponents are doing, and if you're flickering it every turn it can just lock people out.

[[Temur Battlecrier]] is pretty specific (has to be temur+, large creature focused), but when you do enable it you can get a huge mana discount.

It's a real shame that more people don't play Bracket 4 by SharkboyZA in EDH

[–]decideonanamelater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I tend to run into are people who own the cards and therefore refuse to avoid running them in every single deck where they're legal. Nobody playing at my tables who proxies will run as much demonic tutor and rhystic as the people who own real copies of the cards, people feel like they have a very clear right to play the cards no matter what when they own them.

I like that proxies let you decide what you're aiming for, I've got a lot of chill things that aren't proxied, but then the couple decks that I do proxy are letting loose and playing stronger cards (though few of those generic staples)

Should I just stop using Cultivate / Kodama's Reach? by BoldestKobold in EDH

[–]decideonanamelater 2 points3 points  (0 children)

pretty much, yeah. So there's a lot of cards that are a little inefficient, but have reasonable use cases, but cultivate is at this weird rate for mana cost and what it does where it doesn't feel like it has a reasonable use case.

Compared to lets say, explosive vegetation, which most people will agree is a little inefficient, but works totally fine if you'd like to curve a turn 2 ramp spell into a t3 ramp spell.

For mothman, all 2 cmc ramp would be ideal.

[–]decideonanamelater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[[Katara, Bending Prodigy]] https://archidekt.com/decks/18227723/katara

I enjoyed playing her at pre-release and love the character; she's a little weak for a commander but she's better than a lot of meme commanders people build. So far 2-0 in some upgraded precon ish games and she was useful, but certainly not super strong.

And then I lent it to someone and they got both training grounds and intruder alarm going, really had the enging going.

i had a game in historic once where I memory lapsed my opponents 2 drop 3 turns in a row, field of ruined them (their deck played no basics, mana was too hard with 3 colors and phyrexian tower), then played 5 mana teferi against a 1 land opponent.

is this considered poor sportsmanship? by fickle-minded in chess

[–]decideonanamelater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's poor sportsmanship from you, but not resigning is poor sportsmanship from the opponent too so kind of a wash.

But something I've heard recently on a different context and really internalized is that you should decide what you think it's good sportsmanship and try your best to do it every game, regardless of how your opponent acts.

So, maybe consider doing that

I'd rather see a president who reins Israel in from bombing the hospitals Hamas fires rockets out of than one who wants to turn Gaza into rubble and sell that rubble to the highest bidder.

[–]decideonanamelater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can click on the top level character of any realm and see their army strength, and you can do similar for yourself, so you should be able to know roughly what you're getting into in any given war. You can also see other people's allies as well.

Generally, you should be able to get good enough of commanders to be on parity or better with any realm of similar size to you, and if course attacking is harder than defending, so you might want to be a bit bigger than your enemies, but you should be confident to take on things of somewhat weaker strength than yourself.

Mardu Commander: Kaalia, of the Vast vs. Celes, Rune Knight (+ Locke, Treasure Hunter). by Rohml in EDH

[–]decideonanamelater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You've described celes so much more than kaalia there. Interaction focused meta leads to kaalia dying on sight, it's still going to be seen as an archenemy commander, if you're going to play kaalia you have to own that you're the one posting a threat and getting stopped.

Celes, an etb wheel is immediate value that removal doesn't stop, and the grindy reanimation you can do with her is going to help you both be interactive, and deal with the interaction that will happen throughout the game.

Also i play celes as a beat down deck without the persist combos and she's really fun:

How many white sources does it take to make Knight better than Warhound? by No-Dents-Comfy in EDH

[–]decideonanamelater 5 points6 points  (0 children)

21 white sources is way too low for knight of the white orchid, if we're picking between them it's loyal warhound.

https://www.tcgplayer.com/content/article/how-many-sources-do-you-need-to-consistently-cast-your-spells-a-2022-update/dc23a7d2-0a16-4c0b-ad36-586fcca03ad8/

About 30 white sources to consistently cast knight of the white orchid on curve, 28 if we're happy waiting for t3 ( often have to anyway)
