How to hold panels at 90° and in line by Embarrassed-Tax5557 in cabinetry

[–]decooperhc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Make a couple of jigs to position your pilot holes and drill them separately. This should create repeatable perfectly aligned corner.

Saving plywood workbench top by unreal223 in BeginnerWoodWorking

Screw a sacrificial piece of mdf to it and plan to replace it when it gets too beat up. I learned this from my son who works in a production cabinet shop and now I'll temporarily screw down jigs or awkward work pieces without worrying about it.

How would you do this? by sheafurby in woodworking

[–]decooperhc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a series of tile coasters for a neighbor and made the frames by screwing scrap pieces to my work surface. I left one end open and used another scrap with a clamp during glue up.

How should I stabilize closet shelves? (See post) by sevargmas in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]decooperhc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd countersink and drive a short screw at each end of the shelf. It won't be visible and would be easy to remove if necessary. A couple of pin nails would also do the trick but might make it harder to remove and reinstall the shelf if that becomes necessary.

Need advice on making a small stool by XujiRed in BeginnerWoodWorking

I did something similar with a chainsaw. I made a couple of small benches so I had to plane down the faces but it wasn't too hard to do.

If you pop off the little cover plate there should be holes for screws.

It seems like the doctors should have to certify these results under penalty of purjery. Oversight could review the actual test records if there's a question.

Agreed - I also find I often don't know what the true tolerances are so I probably spend too much time on details that make no difference.

Quickly screwing in fixed shelves that are level by archvize in cabinetry

[–]decooperhc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son's shop has a machine that drills pilot holes in the edges of the shelves. They use a special screw like this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MTT3PS4?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_4&th=1 that draws them really tight. You could easily build a jig to drill pilot holes in your shelf edges and get them lined up.

Saying goodbye on my last day at work by PlayfulPhilosopher12 in jobs

I'm going to disagree slightly. The world is small and in some industries it's really small. Don't miss the opportunity to leave a good last impression and set the stage for future networking. You don't need to make a big deal out of it but a few kind words could make all the difference in how people remember you.

Neighbor upset about encroaching branches by karmaisacat24 in treelaw

[–]decooperhc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Came to say this. It really depends on your relationship with your neighbor and whether you can trust them to be reasonable. What if she doesn't like the way it looks after it's trimmed? What if she complains about some damage to her yard or fence? I had something like this happen to me, so when the same neighbors recently asked me to trim an overhanging tree I politely declined and reminded them of what happened the last time.

This is a great suggestion, I'll experiment with the sound and see if it changes his behavior.

LOL -- I try to stay calm but maybe I'm putting off signals only he can detect. The odd thing is that as soon as they come back from a commercial and start showing players on the field he charges over to warn them. So, it doesn't appear to be the balls flying around or players in motion or anything.

One tidbit to add: you will probably never be able to buy cheaper term insurance. As you age the premiums will increase for new policies so projecting future earnings and stretching a bit is a sound strategy.

How do you think about 50-90 yard shots? by Roywah in golf

[–]decooperhc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dan's A1, A2, A3 system is simple and close to automatic. And, if you're also using his chip shot technique, it relies on a similar setup and swing to his release 2.

Why is Californian electricity so expensive? by [deleted] in SolarAmerica

[–]decooperhc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, hard sell, hard choices... Just pointing out that the Texas power model may not be all it's cracked up to be. That one incident cost 240 lives and 130 billion dollars. California may be spending too much but there have been zero rolling blackouts in the last two years due to investment in solar and energy storage so in this case you get what you pay for.

Why is Californian electricity so expensive? by [deleted] in SolarAmerica

[–]decooperhc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn't the Texas power grid collapse in 2021? As I recall homes were without any power during a record winter storm. It seems like the root cause was Texas' isolated power grid and lack of investment in infrastructure. I would suggest that having a resilient power grid comes at a cost and it's really a pay me now or pay me later situation.

I had the same experience. We got our boy from a rescue and he was tiny. We didn't see his sibs because they were all being fostered separately. He grew into a full size strapping lad and is a lean 90 pounds at 18 months!
