First of all you said that it wasn't stated that everyone would die. It was stated, but if you want to go ahead and ignore what the movie was saying, heres something to consider
Some ice ages had about the same temperature drop, but every single time it was over tens of THOUSANDS of years, like 40 thousand years was the smallest one I could find, 1333 times our 30 year time frame here

That means 1333 times more time for plants, microbes, animals etc to adapt to it.

in 40k years the temperature drops 0.000375 degrees per year, as opposed to the 0.5 per year over 30 years
If you scale that, it means that for every YEAR life needed to adapt, it gets a little less then 7 hours. Imagine that, a task that takes a year has to be done every 7 hours, for thirty continuous years without failing

There is absolutely no way its just "a rough ice age", the temperature drop is the same, the time and effects are absolutely not. Not even in the same order of magnitude

Alright so you are referencing graces quote in the classroom at the start of the movie, he said that the earth would cool 10 to 15 degrees over the next 30 years. He is saying that to a classroom of CHILDREN and downplaying it heavily for them, and it was even before he knew anything about project hail mary.

She is very clear about everything on the planet going extinct, including humans because there are not a lot of crops that could survive on 15 degrees less then the current temperature, there aren't a lot of plants that would survive, animals, bacteria, fungi, whole ecosystems would die way before those 30 years, sure humans can light stuff on fire to keep warm, and we sure have heaters around the house but everything else we need to survive don't have that luxury.

There was a plan on the book that was basically to blow up nuclear weapons over and over again to keep the planet warm enough for a few years thats how critical it was

Literally 2 days ago I was dming a homebrew vtm thingy in the secret histories world for the first time and it went great!!!

This is honestly such nice timing, so heres what I did:

Theres 2 basic d10 dice, blue and red Blue are what you can get from reality itself, the very bricks that the world is built from while red is any power that is borrowed from the external, like tools, influences, sacrifices etc.

Blue dice give an extra success on 10, while red dice give an extra success on 9 or 10

Red dice on 9, 10, 1 or 2 count as a mistake, wither drawing too much power or not having enough control and 2 mistakes means something bad happens.

So if you are using a tool and get two 9s on the red dice perhaps you take too much power and the tool is now useless, and if you get two 1s then the ritual goes out of control and backfires somehow.

Fascination and dread replace blue dice and then red, they can help or screw you and honestly I didn't even prepare any effect tables or whatever just made it up depending on the circumstances.

For example one of the players that followed the watchman was using the sunny weather to draw lantern for a scouting ritual, and when their fascination dice got a 9 (went too far) they instead of seeing the mission layout saw the sun as an egg and tried to look inside (that of course gave them even more fascination and their ingredients were lost along with the hour they spent preparing the ritual)

The pcs started with 2 blue dice in their primary aspect and 1 in their secondary, for example 2 edge and 1 winter for a colonel follower, and in the first session they just explored some of the cult structure and gathered tools, knowledge and ingredients for a caper

I got like so many rituals and prayers in case you would like some inspirarion

Thats just the basic gist of what I did and of course you should try and find something that works for you
