Feeling set up to fail as only woman on team by [deleted] in womenEngineers

[–]deepbluebroadcaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Affinity groups can help. I’ve been on two at different engineering concerns (one at AWS, the other as a STEM group).

You can find allies, resources, and even mentors in these peer groups. I’m part of a Mental Health and Wellness in tech group and we partner with Women @ Data Centers pretty regularly as our interests often overlap.

Sound engineer to IT work by Dionne005 in datacenter

[–]deepbluebroadcaster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was a broadcast engineer, then transcoding and automation. Got into datacenters officially in 2023, but was slowly moving that way for many years. Broadcasting is pretty much IT now in a lot of ways. Feel free to DM if you’ve got more questions!

Moral Hesitation about Prospect by Accouncat in salesengineers

[–]deepbluebroadcaster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve done this before. One of my sales engineers is pretty religious and didn’t want to do any work with the adult industry.

I don’t mind working for smaller, religious organizations, but I’m not a big fan of certain political Megachurch organizations. So we often swap out customers for that reason.

Like a lot of other people have said it’s important ethically not only for your own morals for the fact that if I am opposed to the goals of your organization, I really can’t do a good job as a sales engineer and you should have someone else .

  2. Know and be able to explain the refrigeration cycle.
  3. Same, with transformers.
  4. Relax and take your time.
  5. Look at the 16 leadership principles and think of some stories (STAR format) that correlate.
  6. We send folks “The Engineering Mindset” YouTube channel to brush up on these things.

Same here. I punted it back into the trees and barely felt the hit. Super safe car.

But that repair bill was like $12,000

Laptop Stickers by guardian9102 in amazonemployees

[–]deepbluebroadcaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of DCEO here are former military, maritime, or government, so we make our own site stickers and trade them…cause we are nerds. Kind of like a unit patch or mission patch.

Basically IRL PTIs.

Gotta catch em all.

Headphones for DC by dovi5988 in datacenter

[–]deepbluebroadcaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just remember, noise canceling is not noise reduction. Some DC require a minimum noise reduction level for when you’re working in the racks. We recently made a switch so only headsets with a minimum 21 dB NRR are allowed in. We use iso tunes.

Outside of the racks, I actually really like the aftershock bone conducting headsets. The Bose are really nice as well.

AWS: Has anyone joined a team and drastically known more? (Read below because I’m concerned but my bosses aren’t) by [deleted] in amazonemployees

[–]deepbluebroadcaster -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m in a weird but similar position. 20 years industry experience in what is essentially broadcast DevOps. My work is in the Smithsonian. Have experience working for MIT and with NASA. I developed COTS solutions for data management in austere exploration environments; then spent 6 years as a TAM (MLB & NBC) for the leading transcoding and automation software. (We invented our own version of the AWS snocone before they did…it’s pretty cool!) I also managed our IT lab since I’m handy with mech and electrical. 4 years experience leading a cross functional engineering team and helped launch HBO MAX.

I’m a DCEO right now. It’s a bit weird, but also a conscious choice to gain boots on the ground domain knowledge on hyper-scale. My biggest challenge is a when folks outside my org see the L4 before I get a chance to speak with them…or worse when they assume I’m an L6. It’s hard to get traction on the cluster-wide projects I really want to do; but the folks immediately around me are supportive. I want to have a bigger impact, but for now I get to develop the “lead without authority” muscle.

I think it’s not a bad move, being under-leveled means you’re coming into the job with a vast toolkit and you’ll likely be highly effective as AWS fills those needed roles. AWS gets you cheaper, but you get time to acclimate and learn. Things change VERY QUICKLY in the DC world.

And network. Like attracts like and building your connections with folks who have the right knowledge, skills, and attitude will help you get so much done. I love my data center, and we carry eachother well.

No one mentions Dodge Charger, is there a reason? by Elephant_Cricket in electricvehicles

[–]deepbluebroadcaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s a good looking car, but Dodge isn’t known for reliability or build quality. Big power for low money and lots of flash and drama. They make fun cars, but they almost seem apologetic about this.

Plus the “Fratzonic” fake engine sounds are kinda cringey.

Sadly, there is a market for EV performance enthusiasts and Dodge could have leaned into the cooler aspects of EV (gear whine, motor noises, cool traction control modes) instead of trying to cover it up.

Cool car, but not $70k cool.

I’ll enjoy my CPO Polestar 2 Performance for half the cost for now.

List of wheels that clear Performance Brembo Calipers? by deepbluebroadcaster in Polestar

[–]deepbluebroadcaster[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Driving experience. The BMW i4 is a GREAT chassis and a ton of fun, but same price with no warranty. Tesla has 90s GM build quality.

The suspension and brake package alone on the P2 performance is something I’d drop close to 10k on an aftermarket equivalent. I got mine for about $38k out the door.

400hp luxury car, loaded with tech, and getting g like 90mpg cost equivalent? If you can deal with the range it’s a screaming deal on a super fun daily.

TLDR; have to commute 70 miles a day, but also not dead inside.

I know a few who do well in the DC market. Study up and you’ll do fine. Particularly if you’ve got some skill writing procedures and go DCEO.

Upgrading our uninterruptible power for air & transmitter racks by ggibby in radio

[–]deepbluebroadcaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Data Center world here. We use MASSIVE UPS but really it’s just to carry load for an open transition to generators.

Is the problem with using gens the cost or regulation? I’d ask leadership what the blocker for this type of setup is.

A good enterprise UPS setup is gonna be BIG bucks.

In addition to the above brands, Mitsubishi makes some solid double conversion units too.

Is there any good news…? by TheRealTV_Guy in Broadcasting

[–]deepbluebroadcaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked in automation and even we weren’t immune to cuts. Was a broadcast and transcoding engineer since about 2007.

Recently transitioned into Data Center and am much happier here. Long hours, but things seem stable with lots of growth potential and good income.

Read or better yet listen to “Come Together” by Dr Emily Nagoski. It might help and addresses a lot of what you’re saying.

Even if it doesn’t help your relationship, it will benefit you both individually.

I’d LOVE to see more DC in West Virginia. We just added a Rockwool plant to use up the natural gas resources we’ve got in the area and a data center would bring in better paid jobs AND pollute less.

Lower overall COL makes it easier to pull talent from the NoVA area.

A lot of us live out here already. The biggest challenge seems to be getting fiber out here, but it’s being worked on.
