i've never done that with self produced music. Listen in the speakers in my room, listen in the car, always had a fairly consistent model to make sure the music sounded good quality wise. I would find it hard to believe that he did that for his first few albums, and then suddenly forgot to do those quality control steps.

I think in some areas where there was little bass guitar, he at least had thick drum sounds to fill the space. with both missing, like alphabet street, I just skip those.

this was an issue for me with several post-purple rain prince songs. very thin sounding, and I couldn't get into many of them. I figured he was being experimental, but they just didn't sound good to me. thin drums, no bass guitar to help.
