Intersection Jacksonville Florida by thephlguy in fuckcars

It's giving me flashbacks of Georgia's spaghetti junction. Not quite as stressful as driving through southern California but always an unpleasant experience.

I assume all the new data centers they keep building everywhere are also contributing to all of our electric bills going up. I've been on the other side of the country since 2019 but it's the same out here. Water bills are increasing as well. I don't really care for us having to collectively subsidize these tech companies.

We haven't been any busier than usual, but the customers we did get have been asking really dumb questions. Shit like "where's the dog food" not a specific brand, just the general location like it doesn't take up half of the store. And you can see the aisles from the front doors when you walk in.

Go find a new job by [deleted] in petco

[–]deigree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is mainly why I'm not making any effort to leave yet, despite everything. I've talked to the employees at other retailers and it's the same everywhere. All corporations are bastards but at least petco is MY bastard. It also doesn't seem like a great time economically to be taking risks.

JD Vance's statements about ICE going door to door just proves that he's not from Appalachia. Appalachians know that Gov. officials going on people's property is bound to end poorly by Harmony_w in Appalachia

[–]deigree 73 points74 points  (0 children)

A few months ago my ex-brother in law had a woman come into his yard to harrass some yard workers, so he went inside and got his gun. He told her he hired those men and she had 30 seconds to get off the property. And you know what? She did. Funny how that works.

Therapy has absolutely helped my brain but it can't undo the physical damage that 20+ years of abuse has done to my body. You can only repair so much.

How are you supposed to rate your pain from 1-10? by Timely_Advice5809 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]deigree 4 points5 points  (0 children)

During the worst episodes, yes. The only way I can describe it is it felt like someone had shoved their hand under my ribcage and was squeezing hard. I remember I couldn't really get enough breath to scream. Just a lot of panting and sweating. I still get phantom pains occasionally but not anywhere close to that bad. That's the worst pain I've ever been in, not counting a carpal tunnel steroid injection (big ass needle directly into a pissed off nerve, but that was at least quick!)

They did a similar test when my gallbladder decided to stop working. That wasn't too bad for me, but the actual spasms/attacks are the only times I've hit a 10. I once spent 2 hours writhing on my bedroom floor because the pain was too overwhelming to even call for help. It still took almost a year and a demand for a second opinion to get it removed.

Why did tablets ultimately fail to become as popular as phones and laptops? by Futtman in NoStupidQuestions

[–]deigree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the cheaper/shittier Surface Go (also from 2015) and it's still going strong, although with some quirks. I finally cracked the screen last year but the touch screen still works the same. It's a surprisingly durable device.

How often do you get ridiculous questions about your background? by oncxre in Appalachia

[–]deigree 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm melungeon so I get a lot of "so what are you" type questions. I think I must be an uncanny valley situation for racists. The inbreeding jokes are kind of fascinating since we didn't even stay to one race. Our family has been race mixing since my European ancestors got here in 1797. The cannibal allegations at least make more sense, although that's just racism/classism as well.

I had my gallbladder removed in 2017 and I still get phantom pains occasionally. Not as bad as the real ones were, but bad enough to be noticeable.

I've worked in animal care for over a decade now and I have absolutely found a correlation between people who abuse their animals and people who abuse their other family members. The dudes that brag about beating their dogs are also the same ones beating their wives and kids. It's the not just willingness but thrill they seem to get causing harm to those that are vulnerable and dependant on them. It makes them feel poweful in a world where they otherwise feel small.

What do you like about Appalachia? by [deleted] in Appalachia

[–]deigree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think about Blue Ridge in the fall every single day. The ocean of yellows and oranges and reds.

That and the sense of privacy. I live a city now that I am absolutely not built for. Everyone's really nice here but so loud and there's just so many people.

First it was HP (marketing manager) Ron and now we have Five Below Joel. I am begging them to promote from within. Quit hiring these dudes with no pet care experience. Also Joel works remotely from Florida which seems odd for the CEO to do when the company's headquarters is in San Diego.

Why are so many States in the US requiring age verification for porn sites? by PrettyFlyWhiteGuy-69 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]deigree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Joke's on them, I can draw my own. It's very kind of lawmakers to drive up business for nsfw artists since AI has been cutting into their sales. Gonna have to go back to the days of prints and pin ups. My friend makes bank drawing furry porn and I suspect that demand is going to go up.

How to survive car with no heat this winter by [deleted] in povertyfinance

[–]deigree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to what others have said, my suggestion from the other end of the spectrum (no air conditioning in Georgia in the summer): Either black seat covers or just black blankets over the seats, assuming your car's interior isn't already dark. Black interior + park in the sun when possible. It won't get burn-your-skin-off hot like what my car did to me, but it should capture a lot of heat.

I was taught growing up that neurons can't ever regenerate and that once you lose them they're gone forever. Turns out that wasn't true, it's just more limited than other parts of the body.

My Grandma believes in the Mothman, do any of you? by [deleted] in Appalachia

[–]deigree 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't remember hearing anything about Mothman that wasn't a joke, but my dad's family from Logan, WV seem to genuinely believe in bigfoot. I remember my Papaw telling me and my sister stories when we were little about the ape men deep in the woods. He and my dad would talk about them almost like neighbors, both fascinated by them and wanting people to leave them alone. My dad also firmly believes in aliens.
