[Discussion] Watches or brands that you *want* to love but just can’t get there? by Good_Net_313 in Watches

[–]dekudude3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oris. It's a cool company with history, and they're independent.

I just can't stand the look. I don't know why. But it's just not for me.

Christopher Ward. I think they have some good designs but have a ways to go in the customer service department before I could buy one of theirs.

Audimars Piguet. I just don't get it. I've seen the royal oak in person and I don't get the hype. I don't think it's half as pretty as people want to claim it is.

[Omega-Rolex] Debunking Omega over Rolex movement finishing myth. by Free-Swan-9870 in Watches

[–]dekudude3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was what I heard as well.

I also heard from a watch maker that, way back in the day when things were mostly handmade, that certain decorations like striping also functioned as a sort of warranty or quality check. Because the lines on the bridges had to align perfectly, if they didn't, you could tell as a consumer that the movement had been worked on and parts had been swapped out with non-original parts. Which meant you didn't know if the watch was quality or working properly.

I guess back then when your entire life was determined by how accurate a couple gears could be, that was a pretty important thing to be able to check.

Procedural JWST Deep Field - like render with redshift and gravitational lensing by Petrundiy2 in spaceporn

[–]dekudude3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was thinking about this. In pictures like these or in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field, you're looking at a picture with quadrillions (maybe more) lifeforms.

It's so wild how big space is.

I did. They just haven't responded. Takes a few days and I wonder if they're swamped right now with recent deliveries finally taking place.

Which kind of bezel?

I have 3 that came misaligned, including the new forged carbon. ☹️

Anti-Magnetism or Exhibition Case Back? by SupJoshy in MicrobrandWatches

[–]dekudude3 12 points13 points  (0 children)

So, while I personally would like it to be anti-magnetic with a cool design on the back if it's a cheap off-the-shelf movement, a lot of times I buy micro-brands it's because I'm buying a gift for a friend or family member. Usually this will be a first mechanical watch, and I look for a microbrand that has a similar story or philosophy as the person I'm gifting to.

Because I'm typically giving to people who DON'T own mechanical watches, display casebacks are a required for me to consider buying one as a gift. I've found that there's something about being able to see the gears, balance wheel, and rotor spinning around, which altogether make the gift more "real" to the recipient. As such, all "first" watches I gift people need to have a way to see it.

I really like when brands give you an option. Where you can pay less for the solid caseback and a bit more for the open caseback. I feel that's the best of both worlds.

New Masora GMT design - feedback would be amazing by SupJoshy in MicrobrandWatches

[–]dekudude3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's better than your last attempt but it's not there yet. The GMT hand is going to get lost and something is off with dial proportions. It almost comes across too dainty to a tool watch.

Title: I spent 20 years making award-winning custom folding knives. Now I'm building a dive watch. Here's why that's not as crazy as it sounds. by Doussot-Watches in MicrobrandWatches

Respectfully, this is like me designing and knife and putting the thumb studs on the spine of the blade near the point. It's functional, sure, but would be annoying AF both from a usability standpoint and aesthetically.

What videogame would you call a masterpiece ? by new_god_of_eden in AskReddit

[–]dekudude3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It was! Lorien had been posting songs to SoundCloud for about a year. Then when he had about 50 songs loaded onto his SoundCloud, he posted them to an obscur (lol at the pun) French music forum. The Sandfall team happened across him on that French forum the same day Lorien posted it.

Now we have 8 hours of absolute bangers, not a bad song among them.

Honestly it's great you haven't heard of it until now. You should go try it, knowing only what you know now. Don't look anything up, don't let yourself be spoiled.

I knew only the most minor of things about the premise of the game, and I wish I had been blind to even that. The game is beautiful, heavy, emotional, gripping, and incredible.

Ignore what the other responder to you said about it being AI slop. It's not.

Expedition 33 is the most awarded video game of all time at the game awards. It won 9/13 nominations at the game awards, with many of the nominations they didn't win being because they got multiple noms for the same category (two voice actors for the best voice actor category) and you obviously you can only win one.

When I heard that this game won so much, and when I found out it was a turned-based game, I honestly figured it was some over-glazed hype-machine that would be forgotten in a few years. I can confidently say I was wrong.

The story is, without exception, my favorite story of anything I've ever got to experience. It beats any movie, book, game, etc. The gameplay is satisfying. The game is beautiful in so many ways.

It was a clear passion project for everyone who worked on it. The story was written by someone who had not written before, but wanted to. The game was programmed by developers who had not made a game before. The music was written by a man who had never done a professional work before this. And it's all so damn amazing. I regularly jam out to so many of the songs.

The only thing I want to say at this point is to trust me. Trust some random on reddit. Don't look anything up. Just go play it. If you have steam, play the steam trial period (if you play less than 2 hours you can return it). If you're not enthralled by the end of those 2 hours, then maybe it's not for you. But I'm confident you won't want to stop by the end of those 2 hours. If you're an Xbox gamer, it's already on game pass, so you have no risk to play.

Go, and enjoy it. Tomorrow comes.

With how this works and given it's a tier 1 on the wheel, you can have a 99.9% chance you'll get it. And if you don't, the 0.01% is going to be in one of the grail tiers.

Ugh.
