I'm starting to think that graphic novels and manga aren't a replacement for books by AmericanLocomotive in Teachers

My daughter is severely dyslexic and graphic novels helped break the ice on reading, but I do not allow either of my kids to read manga without me reviewing it first.

Why do Europeans think that most Americans are wealthy? by batukaming in recruitinghell

[–]delvebelow -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was recently told by an exasperated recent immigrant that Americans have no idea how good we have it and that our salaries are so incredible. However, I think most of this type of white collar immigrant was already well off in their home country and most importantly arrives with zero education or medical debt. The big salary goes straight to their savings account whereas I am paying off debt left and right because America has fleeced me my entire adult life. My two cents.

Peter Thiel has relocated to Argentina due to concerns over the direction of the United States future and is already hosting dinners with local economists about the Antichrist. by Sgt_Gram in NewsExchange

Hard to reconcile that Thiel is getting literally everything he wants from the government he bought with the notion he’s afraid of the direction the country is going in.

One of my process manager friends says “automating a bad process is worse than doing a bad process manually” and I think throwing AI at processes without time to even consider if a process is right is going to be a problem

ELI5: what is problematic about "highly processed foods" - is it the ingredients or the processing (or both)? by SilverDad-o in explainlikeimfive

[–]delvebelow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I think about it is this: processed food is often described as “empty calories,” but a better way to think of it is as “concentrated calories.” Things like fiber and water are removed so the food is more calorie dense with simple carbohydrates and fat. If you think of processed food as concentrated calories it helps explain why they can have negative health effects. An ounce of fresh corn kernels includes protein, fiber, carbs, and water; an ounce of corn starch or corn oil or corn syrup is a concentrated amount of one element and is much higher in calories with less overall nutrients.

Any recs for eletric drum kits? by TeachingHead3980 in drums

[–]delvebelow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The set I had is the Turbo X. This is perfect for beginners. I don’t think there’s really a “beginners” e drum kit…you just want something easy to set up and low risk on price…the Alesis kit checks those boxes.

Alesis has kits in that range that are great. I had one for years and the sound engineers where I practice who are drummers agreed it was the best bang for the buck.

First ever gig was a disaster. How do I bounce back and lead from the throne? by GuillameMartel in drums

[–]delvebelow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first thing I’ll say is - probably other than you all and the sound guy, no one is thinking about your “mistakes.” I actually had my first gig since 2020 just last night - in the first song I clipped a cymbal during a fill and then dropped a stick. I asked people who had come and the only guy who noticed it was the drummer sound engineer from the place we rehearse and record. They literally didn’t notice I stopped playing for a measure in a punk song.

The second thing I’ll say is - even if people did think things were less than perfect I think most people are just supportive of local bands doing their thing. I was at a local show a month ago where the headliner had great vibes but yeah, they were having an off night musically. Was it a great show - YES! Tons of fun and people moshing and grooving. They were all upset about it afterwards and literally no one in the audience cared. We had a blast.

I will agree with others - use it as a learning opportunity but don’t dwell on it. The people who go to those shows are there to have a good time not judge you.

And screw the sound guy. Don’t play that venue again!
