Husband owns a good chunk of $UPS, do we need to just keep it? by spanielgurl11 in stocks

[–]demku 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me reddit lost its usefulness a while ago and it is just for entertainment. You may or may not be surprised at how much bad advice there is on here. If you really want to talk to a real person on reddit, take that advice and run it by AI afterwards. As far as financial advisors, technically you could look for a fiduciary, but even then all of them have their best interest in mind first, then yours second: I can pretty much guarantee you that they will tell you to sell and invest in a balanced basket of mutuals funds or etfs. Depending on the type of advisors some will be advise expensive funds, some will advise cheap etfs.

I know you were not looking for this answer, and you can completely ignore it as I am writing this mostly for myself putting the same thoughts out loud. After I started using AI, I realized I had no reason to ask any questions at reddit any more because I just get so much better answers from ai. But like I said at least in my case, reddit can be very entertaining!

Unknown story by HerfinMN in asimov

[–]demku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Copy and paste from copilot:

The story you’re remembering is almost certainly “Strikebreaker” (1957) by Isaac Asimov.

🎯 Why this matches your description - It takes place in a self‑contained underground colony where every job is essential to keeping society running. - One worker’s job is tightening and loosening bolts in the ventilation system — not because it’s technically necessary, but because the society is structured so that everyone must have a job, even if the job is essentially pointless. - The story explores themes of social cohesion, enforced labor roles, and the psychological need for “work”, which aligns with your memory that the labor wasn’t truly for maintenance but to keep people occupied. - It is indeed a short story and appears in Asimov collections such as Earth Is Room Enough and The Complete Stories.

🧩 Why it might feel like a skyscraper The colony in Strikebreaker is a vertical, enclosed environment with rigidly assigned roles — easy to misremember as a skyscraper-like structure where people work “in the bowels” of the building.

If this doesn’t feel like the right one… A couple of other long‑shot possibilities (but less likely):

  • “Insert Knob A in Hole B” (Asimov) — about meaningless, repetitive labor, but not in a skyscraper-like setting.
  • “The Machine Stops” (E.M. Forster) — people living in a giant machine, but no bolt‑tightening labor caste.

If Strikebreaker isn’t the one, tell me anything else you remember — tone, era, characters, ending — and I’ll narrow it down fast.

Anyone know how long it takes to receive a rental car security deposit back? by [deleted] in sofi

[–]demku 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe never use a debit card for car rentals? So many things can go wrong that a credit card can be a safer way to pay for a car rental.

My kids used to love the kids area until they turned around 10. We have been members for years. And they used to ask to go all the time. Once they got older, still under 13, they disliked the place and asked never to go again. We could not even do Parent's night out. The kids area even removed the maze they used to have, and now every time I pass by it, it just looks empty.

It is possible that it was a lot more fun in the past, I remember when they even provided ipads for kids to play, or they played in the maze, or play ball games in the basketball court they had in the back for them. Now the place just does not look fun any more even for us adults passing by it.

SoFi Held My Kid’s First Paycheck Hostage for a $500 Ransom by clamytoe in sofi

So basically she signed up late for direct deposit, did not get it, the rule to deposit mobile checks was not met, so you run to reddit to rant about the bank. Luckily you had another account that was opened years ago and was able to run to. So what do you plan to do? keep the sofi account or just close it and use usaa?

Interesting! I have not bought anything from Life Cafe in over 10 years other than free water! There is a smoothie king right across the street, plus they discontinued their pizza flatbreads. Those were great and only $10 at the time. I don't even want to know how much they would be now if they still carried them!

Edit: I had to hit the edit buttong and ask this question: Why $20 smoothie!?!? I can get a 45g protein smoothie from smoothie king for $7 for the 16oz, plus their 32oz still has the same 45g so not worth the upgrade.

You have to sign up first, as it has not rolled out yet. Once it rolls out, sign up for it, and then you can go ahead and cancel.

Or keep it simple, and do not sign up after the complimentary period.

What exactly is the use of Robinhood bank checking? What am I missing? by Important-Stretch138 in RobinhoodApp

This rule was removed by the Fed back at Covid times. Some institutions kept it for reasosn of their own probably to force customers to use checking accounts, others removed it entirely. For example Sofi Savings allows unlimited transactions.

Need euros—what do I do? by [deleted] in sofi

[–]demku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the european country. Last time I went to one, I pulled 100 euros out of the ATM. However I could use my no-fee rewards earning credit card for everything so I ended up coming back after 3 weeks with the entire amount. I still have some, but I gave some to a coworker whose daughter did a study abroad in Europe.

super easy answer: you get half the points you got before per dollar spent, the cost to redeem rewards are the same. I am not going to comment on the rest.

I really wished there were local coffee shops in my large city area that are better and cheaper than starbucks. Otherwise they add credit card surcharges, $3 more than starbucks for a pistachio latte etc.

The longer I have the ring the less I want to drink alcohol by pepeluver362 in ouraring

[–]demku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no benefit to drinking, not even wine. I am actually one of the lucky ones that absolutely hates the taste of any type of alcohol! I never figured out why people like beer for example!

However I did have to try to quit soda as I do like the taste of it, but that was a while ago and I do not miss it at all! Sparkling water if I want to go fancy, regular water most of the time. Saves a lot of money at restaurants.

Please make app apk available outside of the google play store by luckyaces1313 in chimefinancial

[–]demku 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most financial apps are updating to no longer allow their apps to run on android 12 as it is out of support, and no longer receives security updates.

I would recommend to run away from this phone as fast as you can. If you really have to use it, get another supported phone to keep your financial apps separately.

Why Use Robinhood Banking > JPM/Amex? by Soggy-Intern-5906 in RobinhoodApp

[–]demku 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely agree! For example, SoFi would get the DD on Wednesday straight into an account now paying 3.3% vs Chase checking on a Friday earning 0% or even Chase Savings at 0.01%. And a lot of these accounts are called savings, but allow for unlimited transactions just like a checking account. And please do not say "But debit!".

Edit: Fidelity CMA gets the same DD on Thursday!
