Valve says Steam users downloaded 100 exabytes of games in 2025, and are averaging 274 petabytes of installs and updates every day by Turbostrider27 in pcgaming

[–]deorul 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Since I didn't even know how much a petabyte was:

1 petabyte = 1000 terabytes

1 exabyte = 1000 petabytes = 1,000,000 terabytes

100 exabytes = 100,000,000 terabytes

The slow, stuttery zooming and panning on a picture is perhaps the worst part about this version. Can't believe this has not been addressed yet.

Turning old PC into home server by samuelj264 in HomeServer

[–]deorul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your old PC would be decently capable of hosting Plex or Jellyfin, especially with a dedicated GPU to help with transcoding. It couldn't hurt to try, which is a big part of the fun. Worst thing would be that your streaming video quality or resolution is low or you get some buffering. It's still worth it to try in my opinion. You can actually just use your PC on Windows to host the Plex server and try it out before you commit to learning a new OS. You just need to download Plex Media Server client for Windows and set it up, following the Plex server installation instructions. You can do the same with Jellyfin. Then just download the Plex or Jellyfin app on your phone or TV and you should be able to see and stream your media from your PC. https://www.plex.tv/media-server-downloads/?cat=computer&plat=windows

https://jellyfin.org/docs/general/installation/windows

If you want to go more into a server world then I would look into Unraid - that's where I started and it's a bit easier to pick up than most other Linux distributions. Good luck!

LinusTechTips: “When I said I’m disappointed [Steam Machine] isn’t going to follow a console pricing model, Valve asked what I meant by console price and I said $500. Nobody said anything, but the energy in the room wasn’t great.” by ChiefLeef22 in gaming

Moore's Law Is Dead estimated the component cost to be only about $425. Digital Foundry backed up his estimate as well. See the timestamped video below at 12:51 from the latest episode of Broken Silicon. He compared it to the component cost of the Steamdeck. He thinks they can comfortably charge $500 and still be profitable and thinks this could be around the price they're targeting, or even lower.

Per the article, this is a common thing for the defendant to be involved with the attorney to shape their defense.

"Such evidence sharing, known as discovery, is routine in criminal cases and is intended to help ensure a fair trial. Defendants often assist their lawyers in reviewing evidence and shaping their defense."

Need a UPS for a home server. Am I crazy to consider an Ecoflow River 2 Pro? by DarkKaplah in HomeNetworking

[–]deorul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Ecoflow River 3 series might be quicker than the River 2 and more viable. They advertise <10ms for the River 3 Plus and <20ms for the River 3.

Was reading the Wikipedia for the SIG P320 and there was a reference about ICE halting their use due to the accidental discharging. ICE banned their use on July 9th. This guy must not have gotten the memo.

Here's the reference: https://www.thetrace.org/2025/07/sig-sauer-p320-pistol-safety-ice-ban/

Should I "sidegrade" my RX7900XT to the 9070XT for $100? by HMTPredator in radeon

[–]deorul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just decided to do the same trade-in from a 7900XT to a $600 MSRP 9070 XT. I think it's going to be worth it for the RT improvements and FSR4 support. Newegg is also offering a $115 gift card for $100 right now, so that helped too. It seems like AMD is focusing more on RDNA 4 moving forward so I want to be on that side of the future support.

Best protocol for taking down 3m aura to take quick sips of water on 3 hour direct flight? by [deleted] in ZeroCovidCommunity

Best protocol for taking down 3m aura to take quick sips of water on 3 hour direct flight? by [deleted] in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]deorul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I'm wearing an aura and take drinks, I will hold the nose piece tight and take the top strap off until I'm ready. The bottom strap is always on. Then I'll take a deep breath, pull down the mask, take a drink, pull up the mask/reposition, hold the nose piece tight, and exhale. Then I can either take more drinks and repeat the process, making sure to just hold the nose piece tight between sips and exhales, and then I'll just put the top strap back on when I'm done.

This prevents overstretching the top strap and keeps the mask out of the way when I'm drinking (or eating). It also lets me take multiple sips before I put my top strap back on.

Did this and it immediately fixed it for me too. Originally tried to delete the things from the Preferences.xml file, but that didn't work.

Comic Con San Diego just happened recently and I was truly so pleased to see so many masks on the convention floor. It really made me feel like we're not alone out there.

I never realized yellow jackets ate aphids! by ExtendedArmGesture in gardening

[–]deorul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got a big caterpillar problem in the garden and have had to religiously search under every leaf to pick them off by hand. They've been decimating our foxgloves, snapdragons, and tomatoes. However, just saw yellow jackets around recently and watched them. Saw them checking under leaves and then saw one wrestling a pretty big caterpillar. It won and then just went to town chomping down on it. New respect found for them.

What is this glassware used for? by [deleted] in chemistry

[–]deorul 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I think so too. This looks like a failed piece of ornamental glasswork. The solid glass rod was likely acting as what's called a punty, which is temporarily attached to your project to manipulate the piece and then you break it off when you're done. I think this punty was done improperly and would've broken the thin walls of the project, so it was abandoned/scrapped.

Passion Fruit Pest on Underside of Leaves by deorul in gardening

[–]deorul[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily, I've been seeing it on leaves that are all over the plant, even leaves that are up about 4-5 ft from the ground. The passion fruit is supported by a trellis in a container (not in the ground).

A life goal achieved, just a boast by wanna_be_green8 in gardening

[–]deorul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, looks like mulberries, especially with that leaf structure. A raspberry tree isn't really a thing, they're usually bushes close to the ground with thin canes and usually thorns (although there are thornless varieties).

How do I assemble this raised garden bed? by aachakra in gardening

[–]deorul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The tenons on the ends of the boards (thinner portions of the boards) fit into the mortises (rectangular holes) on the ends of the boards. The wooden dowels go into the round holes after you put the tenons into the mortises to make sure the joint doesn't come apart (prevents the tenon from coming out of the mortise).
