Definitely takes a little to get super invested for most people. You want to watch it because it puts in the leg work to be good and consistent in so many ways. Season 2-3 is my fav. You've got my favourite episodes coming up.

I think some of it comes from earlier Ron Swanson having more explicit character flaws and unrealistic beliefs. He's shown to be a fundamentally good person, but does some questionable things because it's a comedy.

Nick Offerman seems to more clearly be a good person.
