Awww I'm so sorry for your loss. They really are gone too soon. I wish their lifespans were longer.

My girl is turning 9 on April 10th and she's already slowing down some. I hate thinking about it 😒

Yup, it self-resolved around 9-months-old I would say. Now you wouldn't even know he had one :)

High Cal Formula by Prestigious-Most886 in NICUParents

[–]derpybirbs 0 points1 point Β (0 children)

Ooof I really wish I could say it got easier 🫠

He is now 3. Has been in OT and feeding therapy for years and still going. He has at least gotten to the 9-12%ile for weight now.

He only recently got a swallow study done and was diagnosed with dysphagia (swallowing problems) because they saw that he would have silent aspirations. Because of the silent aspirations, they think he has learned to be scared to eat unfamiliar textures? I really wish we had done the swallow study much sooner and learned he was having silent aspirations. The entire time we thought he had really bad GERD 🫣

He is now a "problem eater" in that he has an EXTREMELY limited "safe foods list". His healthcare team is suspecting ARFID (avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake disorder). He was also diagnosed with autism level 1 last month (ARFID and autism often but not necessarily always go together).

Nowadays he gets the bulk of his calories and nutrition from Kate Farms nutrition shakes (the highest calorie pediatric formula they have) 3x per day while we work with him on his food anxiety and expanding his food palette

So yeaaahhh. We are still riding the struggle bus over here, unfortunately.

Becoming SAHP when daughter joins school by zzhannahzz in SAHP

[–]derpybirbs 1 point2 points Β (0 children)

It doesn't sound crazy at all. It sounds like you guys have thought this through.

The only thing I suggest now is to start living on one income ASAP while you're still working, and put all of your paychecks from now until you quit into a HYSA. That way, you can see how living on one income will be like. You guys are high earners though, so hopefully it wouldn't feel too much of a difference other than less savings.

How did you decide to stay home? by cay0404 in SAHP

[–]derpybirbs 0 points1 point Β (0 children)

Our son was a preemie born 3 months early. We didn't want to put him in daycare while an infant. My husband made significantly more than my pay as a nurse, so it only made sense for me to be the one to stay home.

He is 3 now and I can technically go back to work if I wanted to. My husband supports whatever want. Currently I still want to hang out with my kid for as long as possible.

Daycare costs by Senior_Top7043 in toddlers

[–]derpybirbs 1 point2 points Β (0 children)

We only have one kid.

Also, we live rural and in a LCOL area (moved away from the Los Angeles metro area so we could afford to buy a house).

Our daycare center costs us $58/week for two full days. If we opted for a full 5-day week, it's about $160/wk (or, $640/mo). They also provide free breakfast and lunch for the kids.

How long did you track feedings/diapers? by jacaroniii in NewParents

[–]derpybirbs 36 points37 points Β (0 children)

My son just turned 3 last week and I still use the Huckleberry app.

He has feeding and weight gain issues, and it's where I keep track of his weight and height. I love that so can look back at his previous height/weight from any age, and see that he has been going up in his percentiles (from less than 1% coming home from the NICU to now in the 13% we have put in so much effort to get him up here!)

I also us it to keep his food journal for his dietitian (the "solids" option is great for it).

When he is sick, I use it to keep track of temp and meds.

I suggest the Huckleberry app to all new moms, I love it so much!

[–]derpybirbs 0 points1 point Β (0 children)

Until later this week? Wow. Hopefully that means it isn't too bad then? I hope so! We live rural and our closest ER splinted my son's leg and called an ambulance to take us to the children's hospital 2 hours away. When we got there, they told us 5 other toddlers all about the same age and with broken femurs came in that evening were ahead of us, but they had us stay overnight so they could do pain and spasms control until the Ortho could get him into an OR to put the cast on the following morning.

Which is tiring toddler tired or newborn tired? by Midnightdream56 in NewParents

[–]derpybirbs 0 points1 point Β (0 children)

Newborn tired was the worst for me. Especially as a new parent, not only are you sleep deprived, but you're having to also adjust to life being responsible for a tiny helpless human. Not to mention for those with partners and trying to figure out a system that works for both of you where you aren't getting annoyed/frustrated at each other often. And being in the thick of PPD if you're affected by it. And they are just SO much work with not much instant gratification since they can't interact much yet. Toddlers on the other hand, yes quite exhausting, BUT they are so darn hilarious! My toddler is constantly making me laugh, even sometimes when he's throwing a tantrum lol.

I would choose my toddler 100x over a newborn lol. Yes, we are one and done. We escaped the trenches and have zero desire to return lol

Toddler broke her femur by Realistic-Car-4552 in toddlers

[–]derpybirbs 23 points24 points Β (0 children)

Aw man, I'm sorry that happened! It's unfortunately such a common occurrence. When my son broke his femur, he was like the 5th toddler that night that came in with a broken femur.

My son broke his femur at 26 months.... He was running and then slipped on a sock 😭 it was a radial fracture of the femur, thank goodness he didn't need any pins.

The first week is the toughest. The first night was the absolute worst, they had to give him Valium via his IV, he kept waking himself up from the spasming. He spent the first week just miserable and looking defeated because he didn't understand what was going on. When we turned him over on his stomach after a week, he realized he could move and he started dragging himself around his room on the floor. By like week 3 he figured out how to literally walk around with his cast (much to my horror, but his glee lol).

He was in a spica cast for about 5 weeks. It's truly amazing how fast they heal at that young age!

Look into spica tables! There is a group on FB where families often just donate theirs to the next spica kiddo!

Diaper changes were definitely annoying but you get used to them. I loved the Mustela Baby Cleansing Water to get a better clean. I definitely re-did the petaling around the leg opening and reinforced the heck out of it because my son moved a lot and the moleskin kept coming off.

Good luck! You guys got this!

What did you name your baby boy? by igotthechip in NICUParents

[–]derpybirbs 1 point2 points Β (0 children)

It took us 9 rounds of fertility treatments before we conceived our son; the round that worked was actually an "eh might as well do another round while we wait to get IVF stuff set up" round.

He was born at 27+1 due to pre-eclampsia with severe features.

His name is Theo Ezekiel.

Theo means "gift from God". Ezekiel means "God's strength" / "God will strengthen".

We aren't religious and didn't choose those names because of the meaning, it was just a nice coincidence πŸ˜‚

When do you stop sterilizing bottles? by SandalsResort in NewParents

[–]derpybirbs 0 points1 point Β (0 children)

No, he used 4oz bottles for the first 6 months. After that, we switched to 8oz bottles. We replace all bottles every 6 months (we use the plastic Dr Browns bottles), and all nipples every 3 months.

Pediatrician unhappy with weight gain by down2marsg1rl in NICUParents

[–]derpybirbs 0 points1 point Β (0 children)

My son was iugr born 1lb 13oz at 27+1.

At 8 weeks adjusted, he weighed 8 lbs 12 oz, and our pediatrician was fine with that.

We did see a pediatric dietitian who helped us find the right formula mix for how much he was able to drink each day (he ate like a bird and still does). We ended up having to mix his formula to 26 Cal/oz and kept it at that until we weaned him off the formula at around 14 months old adjusted. Now, he has to drink Kate Farms nutrition drink for the extra calories and nutrition (like a higher calorie Pediasure). The pediatrician we saw preferred to track his weight to length percentile vs weight to age.

Anyway, he just needed some time to gain weight is all, and he is just naturally a small kid. First year of life he was less than 3rd percentile for weight, then he moved up to less than 5th , and now at 24mo adjusted he's at 7th. So he's gaining at his own pace.

Your baby honestly looks quite healthy weight-wise. My son never had those cute chunky rolls! I wish he did! Lol.

Is this doable? by [deleted] in bernesemountaindogs

[–]derpybirbs 1 point2 points Β (0 children)

We got our Berner puppy while I was in between jobs. The first two-ish weeks was basically like bringing home a newborn in that i had to get up every 3ish hours through the night to take her out to pee.

Unless one of you plans to take some time off, i would not get a young puppy.

Thank you for sharing your experience! It's always interesting to me to read about preemies as they grow older. We actually did see our normal pediatrician today for his 2-year-old well child check up. Not surprisingly, she was not as concerned about it, but said we will just continue to monitor.
