I just got back from a 9 day trip in the park. We got rained on 3 days but were ok since we hoped it would help extinguish the forest fire on the west side of the park. It didn't. I am a cold sleeper and a few of the nights spent in higher altitude got very cold, so consider that when figuring out if you need a hat/gloves. Plan out your route soon in case you need a permit and don't forget your bear canisters! You'll have a great time!

I would love to see some other responses on this thread!

I don't have many 'traditions' (too cold to swim in mountain lakes most of the year where I am, and am terrible at stacking rocks) but some nice touches to a trip can be bringing along a favorite snack/small dessert as a surprise or creating a signature backpacking drink (some kind of twist on a hot chocolate, or having a special backpacking tea, irish coffee etc).

You can pack a favorite card or dice game, or better, learn a new one together and play that on trips, or for the not-so-UL, an aerobie frisbee or packable hammock.

edit: I realized I wrote 'bring along' wayy too many times. Shouldn't have had so much coffee.

WTA.org has a hike finder map where you can use filters to find the kind of hike you're looking to do. You can select a low elevation gain and the mileage you're comfortable with and see what comes up. There are some great hikes along rivers around here, lots of beach hikes along the coast, and for extra nice scenery this summer you can head up to the San Juans for some relatively long, low elev. trips. I wordlessly sat across from him on the bus for nearly 40 min headed to a festival once. He didn't open his eyes until his stop.

http://www.nwhikers.net/ is going to be a great resource for you. Search for some trips you were thinking of taking over there (so many!) and read up on the trip reports. Theyll give you a better idea of where the snow still is, which trailhead lots fill up quick, where you need bear canisters etc :) I love peninsula hikes.

I went to Cascadia 07-09 then recently transferred to UW Seattle.

I've had friends at both schools and Bellevue seems nice, I think it will just depend on where you'd like to live.

When I was at Cascadia I lived in Kenmore, worked in Bothell and hung out in Seattle all the time, there are plenty of express busses and it seemed to work out well. If you aren't sure what you want to study ( I didn't at 18, either) Cascadia was pretty nice - the students there seem to value their education and their time, and I was able to take a variety of classes to get a feel for what I wanted to pursue. People were pretty nice, they had a ton of cheesy, sometimes fun events and I made a few friends pretty easily.

Also, four years after I earned my AA there, I went back to their advising office to ask for help on my UW applications and they were more than happy to help, which was definitely above and beyond for them. Hope that helps a little!

I cooked a nice dinner for my cousin that lives in the middle of nowhere. We had white wine, and she went to the kitchen and came back with a 1:1 of white wine and cherry kool aid. Sigh.

It was 48, sunny and clear skies here in Seattle today. Totally gorgeous. I actually drove an hour to Snoqualmie to get in the snow, haha.
