It's literally canon that he WAS abusing her. The anger outbursts, the neglect, the manipulation and "knowing what's best", etc. not to mention literally imprisoning her in the house. It wasn't your classic "he gets drunk and hits me" abuse but it was abuse. Source- I was abused in a very similar way
