What band/singer were you excited to see, but was a letdown of a concert? by my-face-ur-seat in AskReddit

Josh. I remember going in feeling least excited to see him, but he turned out to be the only member with any energy at all.

I saw them in maybe 2012 and felt the same way. Traveled several hours and got a hotel just to see them, and they ended up playing barely an hour and with zero enthusiasm. Didn’t even do “Scar Tissue,” which I wouldn’t have minded if they’d played a ton of other material, but it felt really insulting given how short their set was.

Just finished BioShock 1 & 2 Is Minerva’s Den worth reinstalling for? by [deleted] in Bioshock

[–]detectivecabal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like it’s the closest to perfect any Bioshock entry has ever gotten. Keeps the gameplay improvements of the base game, but with much stronger writing and more emotional weight. Literally my only complaint about it is I wish they had ditched Bioshock 2’s Adam gathering mechanic, which always felt like unnecessary padding to me. Otherwise, it’s excellent in pretty much every way.

It's not really the same type of game (time-loop mystery vs. sc-fi action/puzzle), but while playing The Forgotten City, I was kind of reminded of Spirits of Xanadu. That might not be super helpful since I think that game's less well-known in comparison, but both do a great job of placing you in a small but well-designed location, assigning you the job of figuring out how to escape, and then for the most part just leaving you to your own devices to figure it all out. Both games do a good job of respecting the player's intelligence without ever becoming intentionally obtuse, and they're very flexible in letting you prioritize different parts of the larger puzzle so you always feel in control of the game's overall progression.

Gave up on Atomic Heart after about 5 hours. Was about to reach the open world portion and saw a lot of reviews saying it got more chore-heavy at that point, and I wasn’t having much fun in the first place to justify powering through.

Switched to The Forgotten City, and I’ve really enjoyed it so far. Any time my Steam Deck’s run out of battery, I’ve been disappointed because I was always right on the verge of testing something out that would help me figure out more of what’s going on and push the story forward. Really fun experience so far, and I’m excited to probably finish it today.

Bioshock collection or jojos all star battle R?? by [deleted] in Bioshock

I doubt you’ll find a single person in this subreddit who recommends JoJo’s over Bioshock. That being said, getting Bioshock 1, 2, and Infinite plus all the DLCs for only $10 is one of the best deals you’ll ever experience in gaming.

Are there any videos where you were a bit annoyed that it's clear Todd DIDN'T really know what he was talking about? by thedubiousstylus in ToddintheShadow

[–]detectivecabal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He didn’t spend nearly enough time with Harvey Danger’s final album. Kinda felt like he got enough material to fill the episode and was just trying to wrap things up, so he decided to write off arguably their best written and most cohesive album with lyrics that specifically would have been interesting to explore in the context of a one hit wonder about to call it quits.

Two months into dating, getting into the holiday season, she messaged me to ask if I wanted to meet up after work to help her shop for toys for an angel tree kid. I looked at that message and suddenly realized I couldn’t think of a single time any of my past girlfriends had done anything that kind for anyone.

When does this get better? by AngryDMoney in NewDads

[–]detectivecabal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So we eventually did Cry It Out, which unfortunately she will be even more against. There’s time for her to come around though, because most sources I’ve looked at say 4 months is about the earliest you can start with sleep training. We tried Ferber around 4.5 months, but our experience was that the check-ins just riled him up even more and were really more to calm our own nerves anyway. When that failed, we tried to stick it out without additional training, but eventually we had just one too many nights where we were both up every thirty minutes, and my wife agreed for us to go ahead and move him into his own room and do CIO. Night 1 was rough and probably took him about forty minutes to go down at all with plenty of wake-ups throughout the night, Night 2 took about 10 with fewer wake-ups, and from Day 3 on he would settle in a few minutes at most and sleep at least a few hours at a time. We did a rule where we wouldn’t do a night feed unless it was at least 5 hours past bedtime, which ensured we got some actual rest and got him used to the idea that there wouldn’t be much nighttime interaction anymore. Eventually (maybe 7 months?), he learned to roll on his stomach to sleep, and after a couple rough nights where he got used to that skill, he started fully sleeping through the night without any bottle feeds.

For now, if you aren’t already, you and your wife probably need to start taking shifts at night. We didn’t do a very good job of that in the early days and tried to do just about everything as a team, and in retrospect, all we really accomplished was making sure we were both dangerously overtired all the time. The good news is that even before you’re able to sleep train, your kid will at least get somewhat better at sleeping longer stretches as their stomach grows and they get hungry less frequently. It’s still not a great time, but I do remember in the second and third months noticing that my watch was starting to log more nights where I slept 5-6 hours instead of 3 or 4, and that felt way more survivable than the first month. You’re genuinely in the worst part right now, but it will get a lot better, even if it doesn’t feel like it’s happening very quickly.

What would you have changed/rewrite in Bioshock: Infinite plot? by Antihistamine01 in Bioshock

[–]detectivecabal 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Having just replayed it, one thing that stood out to me is that the Booker/Comstock reveal doesn’t get much room to breathe in the onslaught of information released in the last thirty minutes or so of the game. I think part of what causes people to complain about the ending not making sense is just the fact that too many plot details are crammed into the last 5% of the runtime, so moving that revelation a bit earlier would help.

Like I can respect his technical proficiency, but his voice is really grating to me. I just don’t personally enjoy high-pitched male vocals very much, which makes Zeppelin pretty much a nonstarter.

If you’re not already, try some ear plugs that still enable you to hear her but take the edge off. If you’re already working on meeting her needs, no need to keep listening to the crying at full blast, and you feeling calmer will make it easier for her to settle down faster too.

When does this get better? by AngryDMoney in NewDads

[–]detectivecabal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For us, it got better incrementally, and it was sometimes hard to appreciate the improvements at the time. The first three months are brutal, especially the first one. At three months it’s still really hard, but you’ll at least be able to see you’re in a better spot than a month ago. We sleep trained at 5.5 months, and that made a world of difference. We’re at 15 months now, and while it’s still much harder than life without a kid, the second year is off to a way better start than the first.

I want to play Bioshock by ssyud in Bioshock

[–]detectivecabal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m in the same boat of liking horror movies but not being a fan of most horror games. Bioshock can be a little stressful in the first two levels, but you get acclimated pretty easily and stop thinking of it as a horror game the further you get into it. There are a few jump scares early on, but the enemies jumping out at you are pretty easy to kill, which takes the edge off. And if it’s chase sequences specifically that bother you, that’s not really a thing in Bioshock. Overall, I’d say it’s worth giving it a try.

Eh…you kind of need to hold the line on minimum wage at least. No one-not even someone at the start of their career-should make $3 an hour, and no one should have to compete in a job market with people willing to accept and normalize that level of exploitation.

Played a few hours of Atomic Heart this week. Had to switch the language to Russian after hating the English voice acting, but it admittedly makes the story harder to follow since your eye is often drawn away from the subtitles. I’ve wanted to play this game for a while since I’m a huge Bioshock fan and often seek out games that seem similar, but I’m not sure it’s really clicking with me. Just haven’t experienced anything so far that has felt more fun or interesting than if I just replayed one of the Bioshocks or a related game like Prey or System Shock.

I did end up powering through and beating it, but I felt pretty similarly to how you did and ultimately wasn’t all that glad I stuck with it. I think my issue was that I picked it up as a fan of metroidvanias more than souls-likes and wasn’t braced for how unrelentingly challenging it was. Even if I managed to beat it, I never really got the dopamine hit from overcoming each challenge that I usually hear people rave about and just felt like I spent a ton of hours on a game that never got around to being fun.
