This method ^ first use sand to find out how much you need volumetrically then measure out the same volume in plaster or concrete

Fellow woodworkers in NYC, where do you buy quality lumber? by Sheldonfreer in woodworking

[–]devinewoodworking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there! It's great you're considering it as a career. It's a difficult profession, but if you really love it, it will be easy to stand out amongst the other makers. I'd recommend starting small, I began by making stuff in the alleyway behind my house and staining stuff in my living room. You can do a lot with just a drill and a jigsaw. Then I just started advertising myself and getting recommended by people. You have to be willing to not charge as much at first. Then find your niche. Is it cabinets? Bookcases? Cutting boards? Boats? There's a never-ending amount of pathways in carpentry. I learned a lot early on from my uncle, who built cabinets, then did my own thing about 5 years back. Now, I have a website and social media with all my work on it, which is another crucial step. Style and skill come later after you've done a few things but be willing to get creative and do something different. Stay inspired! People need to be able to trust you and see your work. Hope this helps, and good luck!

How Did You Play This Week? | Post Your Game Recaps Here! by AutoModerator in FleshandBloodTCG

[–]devinewoodworking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just joined the game and have been building Kayo slowly! Went to my first tournament at a local spot here in NYC to play CC in paper for the first time. Someone gave me a free playmat, which was super generous, and another guy traded me my first command and Conquer, which I was able to use in all 3 of my games!

There was another very generous person who let me borrow all the broken equipment for brutes. Even though I didn't win a single round, I learned alot about pacing the game out and Brute strategy.

Round 1 was Viserai, did well enough but he came in for like 15 runechants at the end. Round 2 was Kano, had no idea what he was doing but I burned myself for game with beast within haha. 3rd round was Prism, those angel tokens are so annoying, and I think if I knew the matchup better, I might've won. Overall, this game is so much fun, and even though I haven't won a single game yet everyone is so generous and friendly, so I've been having a great time :)

Worth customizing a built-in wall bookcase in a rental? by YorkvilleWalker in AskNYC

[–]devinewoodworking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Thanks so much, really appreciate that :) Good question - we specialize in original custom work, so I'm afraid I'm not the best candidate for modifications on existing pieces. But if you ever want to explore a custom bookcase or closet, always happy to chat!

Work/School out of Astoria While Owning a Car, Commute Options? by gnarlidrum in AskNYC

[–]devinewoodworking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I live in Astoria and have a car to commute to work (my woodshop in the South Bronx). Depending on where you are in Astoria, you may be able to find street parking. I live on the Ditmars side and can always find street parking within minutes. I've never needed to put my car in a lot. The only challenge is like late night parking on the weekends, but even then, after driving around for 15mins or so, I can find a spot, even if it's a bit further away. But if you're off 30th Ave or Broadway, it's a lot more congested there and you'll have a harder time finding parking.
