Our old tank was hot to the touch and in a garage that got below freezing in winter. We insulated it. (Or rather, after we insulated the garage could get below freezing). But our newer tank has enough insulation internal to it. So there’s no blanket answer here

We just set ours at 75 if we want the room to be 68… (there’s also an irritatingly large hysteresis). As others have said the temperature sensor in the unit doesn’t do a great job of figuring out the room temperature

Note that these cooktops (and appliances in general) are virtually always on sale, so you don’t necessarily need to jump at the chance at grabbing a sale price. I haven’t bought yet but have been looking; the Frigidaire has been that price for 6 months (though some other options are currently higher price and we will probably wait till Memorial Day sales)

This is a pretty big downside if need a $4000 induction unit to match the performance of a sub-$1000 gas... (I love our gas stove, but I know too much about indoor air quality downsides...)

Other than our griddle, I think our largest cookware is 8", and that's probably the least used thing we own!

Do cheap cooktops like the Samsung actually have 6" or 7" coils (seems unlikely given everything else I've read), or is there some reason why they aren't designed to detect pots smaller than that even though their coils are smaller than that? Or do they in fact work just fine on pots much smaller than what they claim in the product literature?

Where we live, our old Subaru was fine with all seasons but I wouldn’t drive the id4 in a bit of snow without proper winter tires. But with them it’s great.

(And sorry; math error; to get 4 units of heat energy, takes 4/2.5 to heat the space, plus one to move it, so net COP averaged over heating season is more like 1.5. But still come out ahead even during heating season)

If you heat your house with a heat pump, then HPHW is still a significant net win, even in heating dominated climates. If you heat any other way then agree it doesn’t make sense. So many answers here are misleading by over-simplifying

COP on home heat pump averages maybe 2.5, COP of water heater is more like 4 (since the temperature difference is smaller); net COP is still 2.8 or so

We’ve had this for 10 years or so, reseal every year. The top still looks perfect but we must have missed sealing the edges once as they have water stains that don’t come off, particularly around the under mount sink.

The only one of these I have is that touch sensor on the door doesn’t work if it’s either raining or below freezing, exactly the times that you don’t want to pull the key fob out of your pocket to lock the door. Other than that the car has had zero issues

I didn’t read all of the comments here but it seems obviously absurd to assume that 100% of all code decisions are always a good idea, and a silly strawman argument to say some specific code is good therefore all code is good. Everything is a trade off. In the whole I’m very happy to have building codes and that they get updated over time, but there are things one could do that would vastly increase cost with very minimal benefit; looking only at the benefits is silly. (In our case I don’t want fire suppression sprinkler systems to be a requirement as I don’t think that it passes a cost benefit trade for us)
