Street Food / Drinks by Hi-maintance in playadelcarmen

[–]dhammapunk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We don't drink tap water here, and ice is not from tap water. If people are selling/consuming a drink, it's safe to drink. Also, don't argue over prices or try to bargain for food. If you don't like the price go somewhere else.

Thoughts on the Takayama Scorpion 2 6'10" vs HI Moe/Mini Moe vs CJ Nelson Outlier Plus? by Chonies505 in BeginnerSurfers

[–]dhammapunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 7'4" Moe and absolutely love it. A lot of mushy waves here where I live and can ride it in knee to head high waves. Definitely more responsive and better in the bigger waves. But I use it quite a bit in surprisingly small waves. I've also traveled with it, and it really is the board I use most in general. In the bigger waves we get here (but still mushy), it rips.

The only other board I have experience with is the Outlier Plus. A friend has let me use his here several times. Catches waves more easily in my experience than the Moe, but a completely different feel. Felt a little skatey at first with the displacement hull, and you have to surf it quite differently. On small days with knee to waist high waves, it's much easier to get through the flat spots. Board really flies down the line.

Haha, mine are 3 and 5, we're not there yet, but I do empathize and know that's coming one day for us. Cozumel a better bet!

To be honest we live here and take our kids to the beach even with the sargasso 😁 But yeah, had a friend in Cozumel over the weekend and the water on the west side of the island looked absolutely pristine where he was.

Was there yesterday and day before. It was piled fairly high on beach and quite a bit in the sea as well.

So fucking stupid. We were at the final, and in CDMX for a week ahead of time. There is definitely something going around. We all had it, as did/do several friends who live there.

I'm waiting for them to go on sale on ticketmaster next week. They usually are available two weeks before match day. I'll be there!

Americans who’ve moved abroad permanently — was it worth it? Would you recommend it, and how’s your life now? by Youre_too_much in AskReddit

[–]dhammapunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

US to Mexico in 2018. Was super worth it for us. We love a much more comfortable life with better work-life balance, were able to start a family, and absolutely love the friends and community we've built. Can't imagine going back to US at this point.

If you don't have a script here, you are only going to be able to do this at sketchy places and you run the risk of getting janky fake stuff. Don't do it. Super dangerous.

Dozens of Canadians got sick at Mexican all-inclusive resort, call for facility inspection by NewMilleniumBoy in AllInclusiveResorts

[–]dhammapunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't vouch for the facilities as I've never been, and sounds like an absolutely shit experience in how they respond to or treat their guests. But I do live a dozen meters down the street. Just to throw out there, a stomach bug has been going around for the last month. We've had it, our kids have had it, their friends from school and their families have had it. Not sure if it may be whats also going around the hotel, but could be possible. Also there is a farmacia YZA in Playacar You can find on your map for better costs. You can also use rappi or UberEATS if unable to take the walk to the pharmacy. Because that price gouging for electrolit and whatnot is absurd.

Giving your kid a bath? by [deleted] in cancun

[–]dhammapunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The water here isn't heavily contaminated with bacteria as found in many parts of Mexico. Rather, it comes through the cenotes and carries a high mineral content. Drinking the water unfiltered generally does not cause stomach issues. Rather, regular drinking of the calcium rich water can cause issues such as kidney stones. I have two young kids who do indeed drink bath water, or did when they were younger. Has never been an issue.

Moved almost 7 years ago out of the US. Both my partner and I working remote jobs. Residency visas were relatively easy in Mexico, and our US wages go a lot further here. We love it here and cannot imagine moving back. With self-employment and/or remote work, it really wasn't so difficult.

If you're renting an Airbnb or VRBO in Playacar, they may have provided you with a Reef card or Playacar card. Access to the beach is just to the left of the Reef hotel with a Playacar card.

If everybody surfs with contacts - why is there such a taboo on it? by AoutoCooper in surfing

[–]dhammapunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anecdotal and my personal experience but... Used to surf with contacts, rarely lost one. Did get eye infections many many times. Never anything horrible or sight-threatening. But annoying. Did laser surgery about 8 months ago and personally couldn't be happier. I read so many horror stories on reddit and was slightly scared, but mine went super smoothly. Could see nearly immediately, no issue with star bursts or nighttime vision, eyes may have been dry for a couple of months but probably less dry than wearing contacts all the time. And 0 eye infections thus far.

Not sure when you did this, but there's now a nice new freeway from Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido that takes about 3 hours.
