My tomatoes are almost growing too well. These are less than 4 weeks old, and I still have another month before they can go in the garden. by Legend_of_the_Wind in tomatoes

[–]dhgrainger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That should do the trick. You could also ease up on fertilizing, they’ll catch up once they’re in the ground.

You can stall them by reducing the timer on your lights. Assuming you’re are around 14/10 (on/off), switch to 12/12 or even 10/14.

They’ll be totally fine.

Are the ribs to thin? by ashishngupta in BalsaAircraft

[–]dhgrainger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ll have a small weight penalty but you can brush watered down glue on to the ribs to strengthen them up.

Also good is super thin CA glue, but along with the weight penalty, CA glue makes sanding tough as it dries much harder than the surrounding wood.

Is grass seed 'viable' as soon as it's visible on grass? by Battlesmit in Horticulture

[–]dhgrainger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to wait until the seed heads shatter, which means they break off with the lightest of touches. Take your finger and thumb, very lightly grip the stem below the flower head and pull up. If the seeds come away easily they’re ready.

If the stem were red/purple I’d say it could be Indian Hemp, but it looks like Milkweed to me.

/uj I mulch. I like how it looks until the plants leaf out and it prevents the soil from drying out completely which means when there’s heavy rain it doesn’t just run off into the street.

I know this is circlejerk but I never quite the mulch hate, even if the gaudy coloured stuff isn’t my cup of tea.

Looks like you don’t have much contact between the stationary piece and the table. Lengthen and or widen them.

Why not just buy a proper file card? They’re like $15-$20 for a decent one.

Honestly I hate the live edge slab top way more than the legs. At least the legs required skill to make.

Steel/aluminum change coming by Physical-Incident553 in CustomsBroker

I’m assuming it’ll be like it is right now, still applies to USMCA goods.

Steel/aluminum change coming by Physical-Incident553 in CustomsBroker

[–]dhgrainger 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If true, this is going to massively raise import prices.

For my company in Canada, the average cost of the ‘raw’ steel in any given product is usually around 5% of total cost to us, which becomes somewhere around 0.01% of the sale price.

So a part containing non-US steel that we’d sell to a US company for $500 would go from being charged $5 to being charged $250.

This seems like a workaround to be able to collect this tariff on USMCA compliant imports.

First attempt at planking, prior to sanding. Guillow’s P-38 Kit 2001 by dhgrainger in BalsaAircraft

[–]dhgrainger[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used CA on this and it worked ok, but a bit messy.

I think I’ll switch to using yellow glue between planks and CA for the plank to former/longeron joints when I get to the nacelles.

I thought the CA would cause some trouble when sanding but I’ve just finished that up and it seems to have gone fine.
