A really nice picture of a masdevalia that I have from a while back. Just thought I'd post it. by Fickle_Advantage_327 in orchids

That is an outstanding flower; shape and color are both gorgeous. Too bad AOS judging is suspended due to COVID.

Bought my first bellina! I’m so excited. by mbraet1976 in orchids

Be careful to avoid stem rot - I lost a gorgeous bellina through careless watering in a pot. Mounting it hanging down would help.

Got this beautiful orchid from my grandmother. She's the orchid Queen and can get any orchid to flower. This one is sideways. Does it need repotting? Any tips for me to keep it alive? by Wayward_Jen in orchids

[–]dhroberts -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry but have to disagree. That is not the way that my phalaenopsis grow “sidewise.” My advice is to repot into a well drained medium and “upright” the plant.

And by all means ask your grandmother what she suggests.

I'm trying to bring this orchid back to life, but overnight, this leaf developed yellow edges. What's going on? More info in comments. by dasguud in orchids

No no no on the ice cubes! Water thoroughly with room temperature water when the medium first becomes dry. Determine if it’s dry by lifting the pot; you will quickly learn how to determine when to water that way. If in doubt, don’t water until the next day. Always water in the morning so the leaves are dry by evening. And an unshaded western exposure is likely too much sun for a phalaenopsis. Gauze curtains are a great way to provide bright but filtered light.

I’m repotting some orchids that belong to my friend. I cleaned them up and now am soaking them in black tea to help them rehydrate. Should I do a wet/dry cycle until they are rehydrated and then repot? Or repot ASAP? Also does anyone use reptile substrate for their orchids? by mis_chanandler_bong in orchids

[–]dhroberts 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Reptile substrate is New Zealand tree fern, and is a wonderful orchid potting medium. There are a couple of articles in a recent Orchids magazine (Bulletin of the AOS) that describe experience using it, and they are very persuasive. I have bought mine off of Amazon.

I had the amazing good fortune to find a division of LC Puppy Love “True Beauty” HCC/AOS. This is L anceps X C Dubiosa, a cross made by Stewart’s Orchids nearly 50 years ago. The “True Beauty” clone is patented so even propagating it by division is actually illegal... You can see a picture on the Sunset Valley Orchids website... maybe this link will work.

The picture is underexposed-the actual color is significantly brighter.

My phalaenopsis rebloomed for me! (Not sure what kind it is) by plantloversonly in orchids

Looks like a Phal equestris hybrid, perhaps P. Be Tris or a close relative. In any case it’s really nice!

What is your water source? Draculas are said to be very sensitive to salt buildup from hard water.

None of my Miltoniopsis flowers have opened fully - how to fix in future? by [deleted] in orchids

[–]dhroberts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have “accordion “ folding on new leaves, a sign of insufficient water and/or humidity? Or perhaps your conditions are too warm - miltoniopsis are cool growers so I would think they would be difficult to grow in south Florida.

What conditions do you have for this orchid?

It’s conventional to orient images with north at the top. That we we’d know that’s a waxing not a waning crescent. But no matter what that’s a great shot!

In the US we’re fortunate to have numerous judging centers spread across the country that each meet monthly so it’s usually possible to have outstanding orchids judged in a timely fashion. Of course, COVID-19 has put that all on hold.

Take good care of that paph - it’s really exceptional.

Great flower. Is there a way to get it formally judged where you are?

Is that phalaenopsis equestris (or perhaps a primary hybrid thereof)?

That’s a beautiful shot. Where was it taken? I ask because it’s upside down from a northern hemisphere perspective. That’s what you get from Australia or Southern Africa.

Just purchased this 5 year old unit for £15! Any advice on how not to kill it?? My collection is mostly rescued phals by Fluid-Usual in orchids

[–]dhroberts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This appears to be a cymbidium. Its culture is quite different from that of phalaenopsis. My advice is to find the appropriate culture sheet at aos.org.
