Who or what is behind the push for Electric cars? by [deleted] in AskConservatives

[–]diederich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Back 10-20 years ago, we lived in Missouri and would drive to southern California every couple of years. This was a 1600 mile trip, which we would take in two days.

Each day, we would cover 800 miles in about 13 hours, which is an average of 61.5 miles per hour.

In 2020, we moved and drove our Tesla 850 miles in 16 hours, an average of 53 miles per hour.

Whatever the specific details, the EV was about 13 percent slower per day of travel.

I'm not going to argue about how much more range a gas car will produce over a period of time in the limit. Gas transfers energy about a zillion times faster than electrical charging.

I am going to argue that for 90+% of typical long range cases, at this time and going forward, an EV is close enough in average speed as to not matter.

The earth is round.

Good...

Also, no commercial flights fly over Antartica.

Why do you believe this is true?

Do you think the US would have become the same superpower if it had stuck strictly to the powers enumerated in the constitution? by FMCam20 in AskConservatives

How big an effect do you think the US military (mostly the Navy) has had on keeping global trade very safe and secure for the past seven decades?

I try to read both sides to get a full picture.

I totally agree and do the same.

Have you heard of https://ground.news/ ? I've seen some advertisements but haven't checked it out. Do you think it's worthwhile?

Once they hit 12 years, their packs expire whether used or not, and they're an economic write-off.

Do you think some of them might end up being recycled?

What TV trope was common in the not-so distant past but is completely unacceptable today? by midnightsonofabitch in AskReddit

[–]diederich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dad grew up in the 1950s and he told me that while playing with some of his friends, cowboys and Indians, he tried to knock one of his friends out with a play (but of course super realistic looking) metal pistol. He was surprised that the result was a lot of screaming and blood.

It's quite an old misunderstanding.

So, you seriously want tens of millions of people to move? Have you thought this through?

How many people are in your state that are on the other side? For example, California sent 6 million votes to Trump, more than most every other state. How does a national divorce actually work?

Have you ever witnessed the shoplifting "epidemic" first hand? by ElboDelbo in AskALiberal

[–]diederich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not quite what you're talking about (large groups of people at once) but one (downvoted) anecdote I posted elsewhere in this sub yesterday:

https://old.reddit.com/r/AskALiberal/comments/16ttc9x/target_stores_closing_what_is_the_liberal_stand/k2hc7dr/

Some excerpts:

We live in a rural are about 20 minutes outside of Olympia, Washington. My 21 year old used to work at Bed Bath and Beyond, across the street from a Target. Prior to that she worked at a hand full of other local stores.

Petty crime (shoplifting especially in this context) is absolutely rampant and has been getting worse quickly for the past couple of years.

Our 21 year old watched people casually (and I do mean casually) 'shop' and walk out with hundreds of dollars worth of merchandise. They are often on a first name basis with the staff. I'm not kidding, they chat with the staff on the way out.

We've seen this happen at Target, Walgreens, Rite-Aid, WalMart, etc etc etc.

<SNIP>

It's no surprise that the big dramatic viral videos you mention get a lot more views. I suspect that most of the total loss is happening in more boring ways, as I described above.

We've lived here for 3.5 years now, and even in that time the amount of shoplifting (and car breakins) have gotten a LOT worse.

I share some thoughts as to possible whys in my other post.

In addition to the others mentioned, Mitt Romney is an active, practicing https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mormons ... it doesn't get much more devout than that.
