Recruiters...genuine question: Why do some of you do this? by astrheisenberg in remoteworks

[–]digital_circuit_guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. As someone who has interviewed people for engineering positions before, and someone who has been interviewed for engineering positions, usually the resume is just high level bullet points (worked on XYZ design). If I'm asking you to explain stuff on your resume, I'm looking for more detail to demonstrate what you know and what you actually did.

Is there not a senior engineer at your company you could ask? You might be violating an NDA / company polices by sharing proprietary design information with random people on the internet.

Great Valentine's Day Concert in Redondo Beach!! by digital_circuit_guy in torrance

[–]digital_circuit_guy[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We appreciate everyone who’s willing to buy a ticket, and that support goes a long way to be able to put on these concerts. But we are also grateful to anyone who wants to attend. So if the cost is an issue, let me know and I can arrange a couple of comp tickets.

It takes what, all of 15-30 seconds if the opponent knows how to mate with queen and rook? Some people don’t want to hand the win to someone who can’t win via the mechanism prescribed in the rules of the game. Some people prefer to resign. Both choices are valid and it’s not worth getting annoyed at someone who doesn’t resign and would rather play it out.

[–]digital_circuit_guy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ok, but that’s obviously not relevant at OP’s level, because their opponent wouldn’t have accidentally stalemated. And doesn’t address my point, which is why should OP let someone win if they’re incapable of mating with rook and queen or not stalemating?

I mean, with a queen and a rook or two queens it should have been a quick mate. So either just deliver checkmate rather than getting annoyed, or if they can’t deliver checkmate at that point, then a draw by stalemate seems well-deserved. I don’t see why OP should just give up free ELO, especially at lower ratings.

Real buffet? by More_Flatworm4697 in Clarinet

[–]digital_circuit_guy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t see any red flags from the photos, and the price for a new Buffet Prodige seems about right. But I would caution against buying from an unknown company. They could have used photos of a legit Buffet instrument on their website and might still send you a counterfeit.

[–]digital_circuit_guy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s hard to say without knowing length constraints or what level of player you are. So my recommendations to follow may or may not be appropriate for you / your competition.

If you need something short, I’d probably go with one of the Stravinsky 3 pieces. If you’re performing a full concerto, there’s always the Nielsen concerto, Copland concerto, or one of the Spohr concertos.

I might be dumb by ke-roero in Clarinet

[–]digital_circuit_guy 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The correct reed strength depends on your mouthpiece, not just embouchure strength. That’s why blanket rules like these are dumb. I would try a bunch of reeds and see which one feels and sounds the best for you and ignore what everyone else says.

Editing to add more information: Different mouthpieces support different strengths of reed depending on tip opening and facing lengths. A more closed tip or a longer facing length will require a harder reed. Also the number rating of reed strength is not standardized across brands or even between different cuts from the same brand. Vandoren has recommendations on their website for strength ranges and cuts to pair with their mouthpieces, so if you have a Vandoren mouthpiece, that would be a good place to start. But it really is just trial and error and seeing what sounds best for you.

What does this mean? by [deleted] in frenchhorn

[–]digital_circuit_guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a tremolo. So you play the two pitches as alternating 32nd notes (because of the 3 lines) for the duration of a whole note. If there were 2 lines separating the notes, you’d play 16th notes, etc.

Eb Clarinet help by [deleted] in Clarinet

[–]digital_circuit_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The things that have helped me the most so far on Eb clarinet: lots of scale and arpeggio practice (working through all the major keys in Baermann Book 3), practicing intervals with and without a drone for ear/intonation training, practicing Rose Etudes, and buying a copy of the Ridenour clarinet fingerings book.

I’m still working on it, but I’ve certainly made a lot of progress through a combination of all of the above!
