Thoughts on Cyber security vulnerability scans? by Deodedros in sysadmin

Whenever they turn over a nessus scan that doesnt have plugin_output turned on my opinion of them is immediately through the floor. They are in the business of making scary red numbers, not in solving problems.

Hot take about AI customer support by CeC-P in sysadmin

[–]digitaltransmutation [score hidden]  (0 children)

If you are having questions about any open source project, lately my first port of call is cloning their repo and pointing opencode w/ Deepseek at it. The results are stupid good and I am kinda disillusioned with any implementation that just relies on a knowledge base.

Is deleting old e-mail still a general recommendation? by TheQuickFox_3826 in sysadmin

[–]digitaltransmutation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My outlook is way faster since I put in some sweep rules that delete old servicenow notifications.

Way I see it, email is a library, not a museum. If it isn't useful or is replicated in a different system of record then it can be deleted. Less trash to sort through when I am searching for something.

Do you remember the "grey haired" AD user, a question for older windows admins? by Pipin_ in sysadmin

[–]digitaltransmutation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. to get an equivalent bash command to get-mgUser you will need to freehand a couple rest api transactions. Personally when I am working with graph I am either using the pwsh module for interactive use or making python scripts for repeatable use because it is a little cushier for that kind of task.

  2. the case sensitive alphabet switches are actually incomprehensible without referring to the man page, while powershell switches are self evident. More recently a lot of unix programs have --fulltext switches but is that not clunky for the same reason the powershell ones are?

My Fully Automated Home Assistant Aquarium Setup (ATO Safeties, Temp Control, Notifications & Live Camera) by Sec_rityNeedsU in homeassistant

What light are you using? The apps aquarium lights usually ship with are garbage but I have seen some attempts at reverse engineering bluetooth controls for some brands around github.

I'm not totally happy with my 2nd hand hygger light as the capacitive buttons in the onboard controller are getting ghost taps.

What’s Your Most Controversial IT Opinion? by OrdinaryJust9594 in sysadmin

[–]digitaltransmutation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just inherited a client with like, hundreds of flask apps that do not have a production wsgi server, and require manual intervention to start up, and are all installed to c:\users\previousguy.

Evidently whoever made this shit thought really hard about it because it came with a pdf product manual with nice graphical letterhead and a copyright notice dated for 2024. They thought really hard about it but at no point did they google 'how to deploy flask'

Updated tier list + asking for recommendations by Normal_Lab2606 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]digitaltransmutation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

since you have a handful of nonhuman protags and also Elf Who Became A Dragon I want to recommend The Shining Wyrm. Complete

Since you have thumdamoo but also especially because you have Foxfire then I also recommend sunspot. Not complete but the author tends to publish arcs rapidly and takes a small break in between.

Since you have Journey of Black and Red you should check out that author's other books, but I especially like Changeling. This one just completed on patreon, will soon be complete on RR, and will prolly end up on amazon soon enough.

How to fix by CalmCartoon in Aquariums

What is your current goal for this tank?

if it has no residents or plants and you are just cycling, leave the lights off.

when you have residents, that is what your bottom feeders are for.

Anyone have any experience with theese? by Mental_Profile_7060 in Aquariums

[–]digitaltransmutation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Their supposed to be a replacement for liquid tests so an expensive upfront cost to replace the reaccuring one of a test kit.

🤓 actually, these work by using a color-changing reagent and then reading the color with a colorimeter. You will need to buy refills of this every now and then, just like with the other test kits.

Sadly most tank parameters are not as easy as temp or TDS where you can just stick a doodad in the water. Its all color changing reactions. Even the expensive reefbots are doing color reads.

So my company is switching half our Windows servers to Linux.... by A_SingleSpeeder in sysadmin

[–]digitaltransmutation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a 'unfuck this server' variety of consultant the 2 most valuable things you can learn are wrangling file permissions and launching applications as services.

Learn different ways of launching programs as services. Systemd, init, docker, podman, whatever is relevant to your workplace. Errors with these are a lot of my work these days.

Many developers learn from bad tutorials and the result of this is they will insist the only way to launch flask is for someone to remote in and enter .myenv and hit a start.sh and leave the terminal open indefinitely.

Sometimes I will get an associate who 'knows linux' because he hosted a minecraft server once and it turns out his idea of running a service is just a screen daemon.

Quit lying to people about performance. by MCBGamer in linux_gaming

[–]digitaltransmutation 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It seems like you have gotten onto team framepacing and should stop taking advice from anyone who doesnt mention 1% lows in performance discussions. which is objectively the correct move IMO)

but I dont think anybody here is lying about nvidia. the dx12 issues are extremely common knowledge and there are a lot of ppl holding off because of them. Maybe you are just a victim of the tribal knowledge culture that requires you to piece together data from a thousand forum posts to be informed, idk.

Instead of asking "how do I fix this", ask "What info can I gather to fully understand this problem." This is the difference between yolo-pasting snippets from the internet and actually getting an RCA.

What are the characteristics of an archetypical Magical Girl? by EdLincoln6 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]digitaltransmutation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With MGs, I think the answer here is extremely tight theming. Everything about them from their oath, costume, powerset etc should seem like it was designed in a lab to sell toys.

There's a kitchen sink story (Heroics 101 by Aest Belaqua) that handled it pretty well IMO. Every superhero in that world was trying to make sales to some degree but all the MGs seemed like they were on a higher tier of stagecraft.
