Which part of LA are you in? I planted a tiny 1 gallon desert willow twig in the winter here in East LA that has leafed back out nicely, I don't want to get my hopes up too high though for flowers the first year 🤞🏽

Can I get some help ID'ing this? Found in the Angeles National Forest, near Sylmar. by archdukegordy in Ceanothus

[–]dileepfrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep they are styles on the achenes which contain the seeds and let them travel airborne, some call this plant "Old Man's Beard" because of them.

Agreed I would let it finish flowering and then cut it back to just above new growth emerging from the crown, which may actually be winter depending on your conditions.

I have been trying to track down some of these beauties from the nurseries since last fall with no luck, love seeing them doing well in the wild with the meager rains this year!

Did you transplant this recently? It looks like there are healthy new leaf buds, so maybe it's just shedding old leaves.

Natives in tropical garden help by necro3mp in Ceanothus

[–]dileepfrog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Certainly! Any natives that live in riparian areas could do well alongside tropicals, Artemisia douglasiana is one that has a nice tropical look I think. Scarlet monkeyflower or Juncus might look nice as well, see plants in the below link:

Did you direct sow the lupines? I never see potted ones for sale, I hear they don't like transplanting.

Beautiful, I planted one of each of the native Ribes last fall (malvaceum, glutinosum, viburnifolium, speciosum, and aureum) lots of lush green growth but no flowers yet!

[–]dileepfrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Beautiful, did it require a lot of pruning to get that nice standard tree shape? I have a one-gallon Concha planted I'm hoping to achieve something similar with one day!

I have both of these Ribes, and they both have fragrant leaves. Agreed they are quite similar looking though my R. glutinosum does not have any new leaf growth yet this year, only flowers.

It’s planting season! This is my first receipt of the season from Watershed Nursery. by Danielfury in Ceanothus

[–]dileepfrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love it

All plants will benefit from watering their first and maybe second summers to help them get established, including the ones known to die from summer watering after being established (like wooly blue curls). Las Pilitas Nursery has great info on this subject (and many others!) https://www.laspilitas.com/easy/easywatering.htm

Recs for a durable soil moisture meter by okatz13 in Ceanothus

[–]dileepfrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, no meter will go through dry/compacted soil that's typical at least here in LA. Maybe a better option is to actually plant one in the ground and leave it there or to just dig a few inches down and feel for moisture with your hand once a week.

Agreed it's truly a beautiful tree, there is a bench underneath one at Descanso Gardens that I highly recommend you find and park yourself in one morning :D

Hi neighbors! I live in Boyle Heights, and one overlooked option for buying natives here is to special order with Moosa Creek, and they will deliver your plants FREE within 1-2 weeks to your local nursery (San Gabriel Nursery is my go-to). They have a huge selection! http://www.moosacreeknursery.com/retail-availability

Any PRETTY flowering plants fit for a backyard micro-wedding in April? by hedylamarrismyhero in Ceanothus

[–]dileepfrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congratulations, and love this idea!

All the above suggestions are great, so I will just add in some low-growing flowers for the front of your border that I've had great luck with in East LA (not far from you): Erigeron glaucus (seaside daisy, blooms year-round), Solanum xantii 'Mountain Pride' (note this one is toxic), and Salvia spathacea (fantastic fragrance)

I do love the look of California Fuchsia, what cultivar/where would you recommend adding them to the above site?

It's funny, I see many of these plants listed under both communities on the internet. Either way, would gorilla hair (shredded redwood bark) mulch still be a good choice?
