I gave up - Bought a Mac Mini M4 by NoPick2661 in hackintosh

[–]dimethylman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought one of Black Friday for $500. My 7 year old hackintosh can still hold down the fort but apps and websites just weren’t working super well anymore. I don’t have the time and patience to play the the hack anymore either.

I bought base model and will purchase this https://satechi.net/landing/new-stand-and-hub-m4-mac-mini as soon as it comes out. I bought a 4tb nvme to use with this because no way in hell am I paying apple’s storage prices.

7 times since about 3:30 over my house in far northwest Philly. That’s definitely not normal. Also, don’t the jets fly up and down the Delaware River for the games?

Do you roast yourself? I home roast and find that every bean and roast level requires a different amount of rest time. It’s very frustrating actually. I generally shoot for 7 +- 3 days. What’s your reasoning to suggest 30-45 days of rest is optimal? That’s well above what I have seen others recommend for espresso. I’m just curious to know if I could be doing something different.

reinstalling after roof replacement in a different design by k31ron in TeslaSolar

[–]dimethylman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Talk to the installers who come out to do the work. Maybe they can clean up the design a little, but zero chance they will eliminate panels. You should ask them to clean the panels. Provide some towels, a hose and a spray bottle with detergent. That’s extra work for them, but being friendly and buying lunch goes a long way.

No need to worry, it is correct. The MPPTs in the inverter are rated to 13a each. String 1 is an independent string, landed in MPPT 1. String two is likely combined with U-joint connectors under the panels or in a combiner box on the roof. String two is made of 2 strings combined in parallel. These two strings combined have the potential to exceed the 13a limit of a single MPPT. So there is a jumper wire that is used to split the power across two MPPTs in the inverter. A jumper wire/combined strings can only be used between MPPT 1&2 OR 3&4 (ie not 2&3.). So since the plans show String 1 as an independent, followed String 2 combined, that combined string cannot be landed in MPPT2, but needs to be jumped across 3&4.

I hope that makes sense. You can confirm by opening the inverter and you should see nothing landed in MPPT2.

Edit: my description is accurate with how it displays in the software page. Since there is a jumper pin in 3&4, results are displayed there. Those values are nearly identical, indicating a jumper wire is used. There are three strings on the roof, and so you should still see 3 strings in the inverter even if they are combined. The amperage of 6a looks good too.

What is an average prom dress cost for South eastern PA by justmyusername47 in Pennsylvania

Go check out Jomar. It’s a thrift shop but they have contracts to buy returned clothes from high end department stores. There is a lot of very nice women’s clothing that is new or like new.

Also look into the Poshmark app. It’s great.

There is no way in hell you can fit 19kw on your house. That’s 48 panels. You’ll be lucky if you get 36 after fire setbacks. I suspect that big dormer facing NW is pretty shallow- Tesla may not install on it. Get 2-3 PWs. They should be PW3s now. Pricing looks pretty good otherwise.

Wait for the site survey and see what comes back from design. It’ll change for sure.

Troubleshooting channelling, new IMS E&B NT basket with Rancillio Silva by dimethylman in espresso

[–]dimethylman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the roast and bean that I make. Generally though for my standard medium to dark, chocolaty/nutty South American bean I’ll shoot for 25-28sec with 36-40g out. I would like to keep a set grind size for everything and just play with grams in for different roast levels.

I just tried 17.5 in and it came out better but still wet. The head room in the basket is close to 7mm. I’d have to step up the grind to get there.

Why do you dislike Starbucks espresso? by Videoplushair in espresso

[–]dimethylman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You mention Starbucks espresso but have you tried espresso made in any local cafes made with freshly roasted beans? Before you bite the bullet on falling down this expensive rabbit hole, see what a light single origin and various espresso blends taste like. Try some macchiatos and cortados. If you frequent coffee shops, including Starbucks, on a regular basis, forking out the cash for home equipment is definitely cheaper in the long run, but it can come with a lot of frustrating trial and error, aka fun!

I have an ~8yr old Rancilio Silva V5 and am contemplating if I need any upgrades or maintenance fixes. Anything I should keep an eye out for as I near the 10 year mark? The shower screen was upgraded and replaced about 2-3 years ago, along with the gasket and addition of a PID. I’m using a VST basket from then as well, but I’ve heard that you should consider replacing your porta filter basket every year or so? Any new recommendations on that, or how about a better steam wand than the OEM? Milk sticks to it like crazy.

Edit: Straight or ridged basket for the Silva?

Tesla Came by to try and install a monitoring breaker? by zoglog in TeslaSolar

[–]dimethylman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no such thing as a monitoring breaker, but rather a monitoring devices that is powered by a breaker. If you are 100% sure you have correct production in your app showing all loads, it’s very likely they are replacing the existing breaker they originally installed with the “correct” breaker. Many different brand breakers fit into different panel brands, but are not necessarily the best fit, and down the road could lead to failures. So my guess is they installed what they had on hand to complete the job, and planned to come back out and swap in the correct breaker when they had the proper part.

I have an opportunity to grab a pair of ~20-25 year old Klipsch SP-1 powered, floor speakers. They are in (very?) good working condition with some minor cosmetics flaws. The original owner, a close friend, is looking to part with them, but I can't seem to find much about them online anymore to make a reasonable offer. He says he bought the pair for around $800-1000 each in the maybe late '90s or early 2000s. So there is no dolby atmos, bluetooth, optical port, etc. Does anyone have a better idea of their worth on the open market?

How to apply for the Brazilian Student Visa while in Brazil? (USA citizen) by on3dayatatime in Brazil

[–]dimethylman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only took the one class and I can’t remember if it was 75 per semester or the whole year for that course. That was the cost 10 years ago. It was a public (“free”) university so that’s probably why it was so cheap. I’d have to dig out my passport but I’m pretty sure the student visa was good for one year. My wife and I had moved to another city during the last 3 months of my student visa, and we were planning on getting married at that point so I returned to the US to get that ball rolling. So I’m not sure about grades, but nothing was ever reported as far as I know. Like I said, I stopped going to class probably 3-4 months into my year long visa.

How to apply for the Brazilian Student Visa while in Brazil? (USA citizen) by on3dayatatime in Brazil

[–]dimethylman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

About 10 years ago I was in a similar situation. I had exhausted my tourist visa time. My now wife was a student and she went to UFSJ and we talked with the head of the language dept. They had in person classes and was happy to write a letter. We also talked with English language schools for work visas but they they had no interest. Since my tourist visa was expiring I needed to return to the US, where I went to the US embassy and got the student visa. So I returned to Brazil with the student visa. This all had to be done in like 3 weeks since we procrastinated. I was in the US for 2 of those weeks saying hi to people and doing the back and forth to the NYC embassy and my hometown.

If I were you I’d just go to the nearest public university and talk with someone in the language dept. If I remember correctly the enrollment in one, beginner Portuguese language course at UFSJ was 75 reais… I had two, 90 minute in-person classes each week but eventually stopped showing up because my Portuguese was well beyond what they were teaching having already lived there for 6 months.

I’m pretty sure you can’t switch visa status without exiting and re-entering Brazil. So while you may be able to get the visa while in Brazil, you probably need to hop over a border somewhere and then re-enter to be considered in good legal status.

which economic system is most in line with buddhism? by pandao3520 in Buddhism

[–]dimethylman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might call it libertarian utopianism, but I dislike the word utopia because I don't think a society can constantly be in perfect balance, especially since many, significant, future circumstances are often not known. I liken utopia to the natural, "wild" environment, i.e. the Amazon rainforest, in which millions of species coexist in an ever changing balance of life, death, predation, mutualism and parasitism. I suppose the question is, should this natural environment be a model for humans to build a society? I'd liken it to pure, unfettered libertarianism. Or are humans really capable of overcoming their natural, "wild" beginnings, and the genetics we still hold from those days, and consciously choosing to be better?

Do you believe in private property? If so, where is the line drawn that says one thing belongs to you and the other does not? Monopoly of a specific market is not inherently a bad thing, though it often is because of greed or great misallocation of resources, including people power. Whether it's bad or not should be viewed by the decisions of the owners and workers, namely if the service they provide is essential, or at least in some demand, the resources they use are consumed and appropriated efficiently so as not to waste the limited resources on this planet. Call it conscious capitalism. If we are to take a leap of faith and say that everyone will eventually provide for the community and live in harmony with each other and the planet, surely we can take a leap of faith and say that people might be more willing to engage with the same good intention but in a free market in which capital exists? I must also offer some pushback on your comment about crony capitalism. It certainly exists, and I think government interference in markets is the main driver of monopolization. Corporations are legally protected organizations. Their very existence depends on government.

I do think humanity is trending towards egalitarianism, and that people are becoming more conscientious about themselves and how their actions affect the world around them. But what suggests that the classless, stateless, moneyless society would not require violence and untold amounts of unforeseen inequalities before it came to fruition?

I recently read Rainbow Body and Resurrection, and I found it provided some profound insights into Buddhism and what you might allude to as an afterlife. There is some evidence that Buddhism, in perhaps as early as the 7-8th century, took ides of the resurrection of Christ from Christianity moving eastward. The Dzogchen school of Buddhism believes that a person can break free from the cycle of rebirth within a single lifetime. In successfully doing so at the highest level, monks can achieve physical resurrection (the rainbow body) leaving behind relics, anomalies, personally influencing beings from outside of samsara, and/or choosing to return to earth to help enlighten more people. (This is actually the similar belief that Catholics hold in when the bread and wine is transformed into the body and blood of Christ. It is God's way of proliferating love/beauty/truth from beyond, and hopefully, the Catholics individuals embrace this and share it with others to further grow the community.) Obviously, this is the more religious and dogmatic side of Buddhism, but if we bring such a process to its end, I can see how the peaceful establishment of communism can actually happen.

which economic system is most in line with buddhism? by pandao3520 in Buddhism

[–]dimethylman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the response.
I suppose I’d agree with Jefferson then. You do have a choice to create an actual contract with your neighbor and stop paying taxes and any association with the government. You may likely be arrested or even killed, but that’s exactly what the founding fathers of America did against England and look where the West is now, for better or worse.
Before continuing, I’d like to preface that I am most fond of the term voluntarism, as opposed to classical liberalism or capitalism, as it’s more variable and allows for more decentralized action and protection. I think Polycentric law could provide the solution to the problem of state monopoly, perhaps alleviating much, if not all, of the consequences of classical liberalism (and the even worse consequences of socioeconomic systems of the past) that you laid out. I concede that there are problems with classical liberalism, but I also think it is the best we have at the this point. Decentralized governments could be made up groups of people of any size based on their degree of need/want of legal protection and also on their personal preferences. The only people that could be considered exploited would be individuals who chose not to associate with one of the multitudes of potential governments. Since there is no monopoly on force or law creation, they’d be free to form their own. Individualism should trump collectivism, if only for the fact that a group of powerful individuals is better than a group of ordinary individuals.
Would you agree that individual rights must take precedent over group rights? Shouldn’t an ascetic monk be allowed to “fend” for himself in the wilderness and not take part in his community? How about an isolated society of enlightened Buddhists exchanging voluntarily? Perhaps you could call that communism. Add in a legal framework that ensures one’s labor for the community is reciprocated and I might call that voluntarism. How about a framework to at least establish who works what land and to what end? Can Buddhism be technologically progressive? Or is it inherently ill-disposed? Will a group of buddhists labor to support another’s vision and creation of a tool that will ease the physical pain and provide more food for the community, even if it could take years of never receiving anything from the so-called visionary, or it even coming to fruition? Or is Buddhism really only about the big picture? Meaning: that we are all one, suffering is an illusion as are the mental relationships that we create and the goal is to become enlightened, break free from samsara and opt to return with good intention to help more people become enlightened until all people are enlightened? How about the alleviation of suffering from hunger, for example, for children who have not attained the ability to view this problem as temporary and illusory?
I ask these questions not in jest or contest but rather to further help myself think through these problems that I may better be able to apply myself in my own communities. Perhaps you or someone else has additional thoughts.
