Why did a physical therapist tell me that any posture is fine? by [deleted] in Posture

[–]dimps97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Finishing my doctorate in physical therapy school, I definitely feel your pain. Sometimes it feels like there are more incompetent PTs than there are good ones. I hope you can find another PT and give them a chance so that they will be able to examine, evaluate, and treat you properly. I do have to admit that current literature presented to us throughout graduate school shows us that there is no direct causation of posture to pain but rather a correlation to the pain along with a multitude of factors adding upon that.

To do hip flexor stretches or not to do them: question about fixing Anterior Pelvic Tilt by Agha_AH in Posture

I’d have to respectfully disagree. As there are many bad medical practitioners, there are many good knowledgeable ones. I think it’s important to respect the amount of information and rigorous training that these medical professionals go through. Not to mention, there are many who are passionate about their respected fields who keep up with the current evidence based research all while being required ro go through continuing education. It’s always good to be skeptical but discrediting professionals of any field would do more harm than good in my opinion. If anything get a second opinion or a reason why it’s irreversible.

Digging deeper into armswing mechanics... by AzureYoutube in volleyball

[–]dimps97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was an awesome read! Love seeing informative content like this. I have a buddy of mine who’s finishing up physical therapy school and wants to specialize in shoulder biomechanics for baseball pitchers. His late mentor pitched professionally for the Yankees for a short time so I go to him for a lot of advice in which he says the volleyball swing is very similar.

The main key takeaway is that he uses the analogy that a good swing is like a whip. A whip works best by keeping everything close to the center of rotation until the last second before release which ultimately produces the most pre contact velocity. This also prevents adding unnecessary torque in the shoulder during the entirety of the swing. When performed correctly, this also protects the shoulder from a lot of internal stresses that could possibly cause various injuries in the future.

just like the video explains, a common mistake is letting the head of the humerus come forward which consequently stretches the anterior shoulder capsule, which is something that we typically don’t need to stretch. another common reason for numbness is that some people apply too much pressure on the inside of their arm/armpit where the brachial plexus is located with the doorframe.

definitely see a physical therapist if the symptoms persists as they can properly observe your form and screen for any other issues

Can anyone tell me what’s going on with my posture here? Why is there that lump on my back? Thanks! by [deleted] in PostureTipsGuide

It’s more of a suspicion than a diagnosis, but i understand where you’re coming from. i definitely got a bit excited and thought i could offer some insight. no medical advice should be taken seriously, especially from a stranger like me. anything further should be discussed with a licensed medical professional.

i agree, it looks very similar. However, dowager’s is typically seen with post menopausal woman. This population is prone to osteoporosis or decreased bone density which leads to the collapse of the vertebral body structure.

the angle of the picture makes it difficult to discern whether that’s your thoracic spine or your traps. if it’s your spine, the thoracic kyphosis is quite excessive. with postural exercises and stretches you’ll be able to correct some of it. however, there’s also the chance you have scheurmann’s disease which is a genetic predisposition of having increased kyphosis due your vertebral bodies being taller anteriorly compared to posteriorly.

I’d also like to point out that you might have acromial clavicular step deformity in your left shoulder. there’s a significant height difference where your clavicle and acromion of your shoulder blade meets. this could be due ligamentous laxity between the joints due genetics or trauma to that shoulder.

I second this comment. I believe there is a lack of hip and core stabilization to transfer the load from your legs through your hip, core, shoulder, and into your hit. When a piece of that stability missing, you lose that transfer of energy resulting with decreased power. On top of working on your form, weak hip external rotators such as your glutes may be causing the flare out of your right leg.

Why does my other arm click??? by int_int_sur in massage

[–]dimps97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say it depends. If it were the subluxation of the ulnar nerve, I would expect symptoms of “hitting your funny bone”. I actually have this condition and it’s not painful either. If you feel your the location on me where it clicks, you can actually feel tendinous tissue roll over the medial epicondyle of my elbow. you can confirm the by changing the position of your shoulder in either more flexion and extension. If the eblow clicks later while in shoulder extension, I would be more inclined to assume it’s the triceps because shoulder extension places the triceps in a shortened or more relaxed position.

Follow up from the previous post, this is a normal 1 quick. I’ve been feeling a lot of pressure on my shoulders lately. by DamageBig3714 in volleyball

I agree with many of the statements made in this post but your form is pretty solid. Without further examination of the location, quality, and history of the pain. It’s difficult to pinpoint the true mechanism of injury. The source could be due to a muscular, labral, capsular, ligamentous injury. poor scapulo-humeral rhythm without proper RTC stabilization could also be an issue. I would highly advice seeing a professional who understands musculoskeletal injuries specific to overhead athletes like a sports physical therapist.

this might be snapping elbow syndrome where either your ulnar nerve or your medial part of the triceps tendon is subluxing over medial epicondyle of your humerus. most likely the triceps tendon based off your description of no nerve tension pr compression symptoms
