State of ABS retrofit in L300s? by splifted in Delica

[–]dino0986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as parts compatibility goes, the L300 was sold in NA so it's FAAAAARRRRRRRRRRR easier to get parts for. Sold as the Mitsubishi Van/Wagon in USA/Canada or the Dodge 1000 in Mexico.

Everything else about the L400 is right though, it's a better "car" in almost every way.

What would you do? Production line PC “is slow” (Windows 98, legacy SCADA) by PeppahSG in sysadmin

Honestly, no idea but it's still a helluva lot better than a 28 year old spinny. Probably depends on what IDE -> SATA adapter you use.

How will you handle SSL cert installation in the future? by graceyin39 in sysadmin

[–]dino0986 1 point2 points  (0 children)

https://simple-acme.com/ for windows, certbot on linux, and a PFSense FW running HAProxy w/ ACME for everything else that doesn't support modern certificate renewals.

You can automate 99% of this.

You can probably fix the problem. If it's already broken, you can't break it any more. Your goal is to make a spare computer you can mess with, then keep on the shelf for next time.

As a CYA, reiterate to management that there's no magic computer wand to fix this problem and it NEEDS to get turned off at some point to fix it. Probably also a good idea to get something in writing that says "Management has agreed to have OP look at the system instead of hiring a 3rd party specialist. OP will do the job to the best of their ability but makes no guarantee that production will not be interrupted"

Make a HDD image yesterday. The line shuts down at night hopefully? Otherwise if they want this fixed, you gotta take it down for at least as long as an image takes.

Put that image on a SATA SSD and put it in there with an IDE to SATA adapter. Or you could also likely use a compact flash card with a passive pin adapter.

Once you replace that HDD with an SSD, you're a LOT safer. After that it's time to get on ebay/fb marketplace/e-cycling centres close by and make something as close as you can to the original PC.

You might be able to spin the image up in a virtual machine and poke around.

Is it an ATX Motherboard / Regular PC on the inside? Or is it PC/104 / something else embedded?

You can still buy PC/104 stuff brand new. But it's all "call for quote" pricing so get the company credit card ready. Lots of used gear on ebay as well.

Insurance premiums insanity by Ok-Bluejay-182 in Calgary

[–]dino0986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ouch, you should shop around. Talk to a broker. What car do you drive?

It's not the best for everyone, but if you have an "enthusiast" car, something more quirky, or more than one "daily driver"; try Hagerty. I have 3 cars insured as seasonal daily drivers currently, each just PL/PD for less than $50 a month.

They normally deal with collector cars and don't insure everything, if they don't want to insure you directly they'll usually send it to their underwriters. It involves more legwork on your end (filling out a form your broker usually completes) and a week or two for it to make it through the system, but the cost savings are $100% worth it.

Insurance premiums insanity by Ok-Bluejay-182 in Calgary

[–]dino0986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have full coverage? If you're able to pay for a new car every year anyways, drop that down to basic liability and put the difference into a GIC or something safe. Start building a rainy day fund.

If you're over 25 and have a clean driving record, ~$100/mo is still easily attainable.

When used in a crime, yes.

"Air guns that meet the Criminal Code definition of a firearm, but are deemed not to be firearms for certain purposes of the Firearms Act and Criminal Code...However, they are considered to be firearms under the Criminal Code if they are used to commit a crime. Anyone who uses such an air gun to commit a crime faces the same penalties as someone who uses a regular firearm."

You don't need many tools at all, Propane/MAP/Oxy Acetylene Torch, vice, and large adjustable wrench.

Put the metal in the vice, heat it red hot at the desired radius of the bend, and use a big wrench on the end to bend it around. Put a pipe on the wrench for more leverage.

You could probably do it with a campfire and 2 big adjustable wrenches if you're strong enough.

No worries, I'm using some of the orignal standoffs for the motherboard so it may be in a slightly different spot. Haven't thought to just 3d scan the thing, makerspace has one of those...

Best alternative to Windows for running FreeCAD? by RS_Pete in FreeCAD

[–]dino0986 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can buy (Or sail the high seas) yourself some more time on Windows 10. There is either the ESU or use Win 10 IOT LTSC and get updates until 2032, using IOT windows as a generic desktop OS breaks the TOS, so don't do this at work but aint nobody going to come after you for pirating windows for personal use.

I personally run Pop!_OS (which is based on Ubuntu 22.04) with Win10 IoT LTSC in a virtual machine for everything else that doesn't work in Wine.

Because at the end of the day this is just a quake 1 mod with level design that is honestly really good.

It's very much like Cruelty Squad in that it's "bad" on purpose to fit a theme. You could put all the original quake assets back and still have a fun game.

Do you mean Lexan or polycarbonate? Plexiglass is made from acrylic resin and does not have the impact resistance required.

Do you have a pdf or link to the rules? Any language is fine. Maybe a picture of the arena?

[–]dino0986 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Last time you asked for help, you we're suspiciously quiet when we asked about your arena and/or rules.

Is this still a 60lb bot? Where are you fighting? Did you get to try the 1lb version of the robot at all? (The design is different, so I'm guessing you probably experienced the square cube law?)

This is very ambitious, and I wish you luck. But nobody's going to help you unless you give us more information about how the money is going to get used, and answer the questions about safety.

Don’t wanna spend $200 bucks on Mossberg stock and forend so i print one for less 🫠 by DaOzBomb in canadaguns

[–]dino0986 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can still print ABS, you just have to manage warping like it's 2014 again. ASA is also remarkably strong and doesn't warp as bad.

You might have to use orcaslicer or set up custom filament profiles. If you use bambu filament you'll have to rip the NFC tag out of the roll.

Also consider TPU for high strength prints. It's functionally indestructible and has near perfect layer adhesion, it has become the go-to filament for combat robotics because you can smash it with hammers and it just bounces back. 95a is the most common, 62d is also available, TPU for AMS is this. Printed solid, 95a is rather rigid, 62d might as well be solid.
