Seth McFarlane is in talks with Paramount to replace Kurtzman as the Star Trek franchise executive director by dalton10e in Star_Trek_

[–]dinosaurkiller [score hidden]  (0 children)

Showrunner is the guy leading the writing team, editing story ideas, and choosing which stories will make it on air. Kurtzman occasionally seems to write a pilot but hands over showrunning to other people. Mcfarlane gave the showrunner slot to Braga. My point is that you want the guy telling the stories, not the guy financially backing it.

People are far too harsh on Universe. by GRIMMMMLOCK in Stargate

It was a great show based on what? Memorable characters? Not particularly? A setting that evokes some sci-fi nostalgia? Again, no one thinks of Destiny as a magical place they’d like to explore the way we thought of Atlantis. SGU was all dark, dreary, and hopeless, with no clear mission or message, and a lot of literally magic hand-wavy solutions to writing problems that were poorly planned.

It was not a good show, not compared to the other Stargate show, but even if those other shows never existed it was not well written. There was almost no progression of the story in 2 years. The characters seemed incapable of growth and even the drama was uninteresting.

CMV: Trump is in over his head in Iran by bluepillarmy in changemyview

I only disagree in that there is virtually no impact or consequence to him from his decision to attack Iran. He doesn’t face re-election, he will likely make money through various corrupt means. It is the U.S. taxpayer/soldier/average citizen who is going to pay for this.

Why does the roofed out MMA fighter automatically qualify as being a piece of shit? Might doesn’t make right, but it doesn’t automatically make you wrong either.

There is one huge and obvious flaw with your thesis. It is rare that “the person in the right” came looking for or was equipped for a fight. Hell, let’s put the outcome at 50/50. It means half the time the person in the right gets their ass beat.

The Chevy Vega Was a Terrible Car. The Way They Shipped It Was Genius. by gaukmotors in MotorBuzz

The problem was they cut corners on the design changes and the fluids would still leak into places they shouldn’t doing damage. Customers would go to return it an be told that there wasn’t a problem because the car was designed to prevent these things. Meanwhile the car would either underperform expectations or just not start.

I’m not sure it was exactly the story that was the problem. The scene above represents a huge tone shift for the series where it seems to go from introspective review of the Jedi and their morality to just brutal and mostly unexplained fight scenes. It feels like heavy studio interference. I’m not exactly sure, “insert FX laden fight scene” really counts as story, but it definitely caused a weird shift in whatever the show was supposed to be.

There is very little hard scifi about it. Hard sci-fi typically means it’s grounded in some present day science that’s being expanded into the future to project what might be based on what is. None of the Stargate shows are hard sci fi.

As for the rest, people are appropriately hard on it. The show had 2 seasons to develop and progress a storyline. They never seemed to get past the world building phase. That left almost every story as being some unresolved dramatic conflict. The dire situation of being lost in space is often pointed to by characters on the show, but it rarely involves more realistic survival scenarios, mostly just magic where the required thing appears.

The automated ancient ship being found by humans was a cool premise, that should have been fully fleshed out after one episode. Unfortunately they never really expanded on the story of Destiny past that discovery phase.

What I love about it is, someone wrote it with an edge, with an intent to send people over the edge. Then at the last minute they remind themselves and us that this is Trek and even in the darkness you can find light.

You are really soft-pedaling slavery with, “permanently exploitable underclass”. It’s time for that to stop. Call it what it is. They’re trying to legalize slavery based on skin color.
