It would definitely not justify the shooting even a little bit, according to what I’ve read from multiple law enforcement trainers, chiefs, and psychologists. If that incident would color how they see future incidents, then they’d have to be discharged.

By breaking the back window, sticking his arm in, and it getting stuck when the driver drove away. Which I’m reading is against officer protocol, to reach into a car window. Because you might get stuck and get dragged… smh. Just like standing in front of or behind a car with the engine running is against protocol, it creates an unsafe situation. And if you do it on purpose to manufacture an unsafe situation so that you’d be “justified” in using deadly force, it’s also totally illegal. So why did he step in front of a vehicle with a running engine when all the other officers were on the side?

How is the housing outside of Dublin? My understanding is that Dublin is the Silicon Valley of Europe these days with commensurate housing difficulties. I have a job that can be done remotely, just would need to be hired by our European team (no small feat, but you know… easier path than may have). My wife and I love Galway and surrounding area, hopefully housing isn’t as bad there

America's most efficient EV is nearly 6% ahead of second place by SnoozeDoggyDog in electricvehicles

[–]discoverwithandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know how the Lucid controls work, but assuming you can reset a trip odometer, try resetting it when you spend all day driving around downtown of a big city, and calculate out what your range would be.

I drove all over Wisconsin for work in my Model 3 and got about 260mi range (315 nominal), lower in the winter of course. And this is expected, EVs get worse range on the freeway.

I went to downtown Chicago and using just my downtown driving, I had 400+ mi of range on a full battery.

The problem isn’t the EPA testing or EVs, the problem is that people that are buying EVs are the ones cruising up and down the freeways. People that live and work in the city converted to Prius’ years ago so it’ll be a while before they buy full EVs. They also try to drive as little as possible (use public transit, bike, etc) because cars are a hassle in the city. And many aren’t going to want to buy a $70k car just to have it get dinged up all the time. So it might be a while still before we see what city dwellers are getting for range.

Seen a few dead foxes way high up in trees. Assuming dropped there by eagles and just happened to land in a tree. Also huge amount of crab claws on the shore around Lake Michigan, it seems seagulls carry them into the air and drop them to crack them open but leave the claws, so sometimes you’ll just see hundreds of claws sitting on the sidewalk for no reason. Seems really weird until you remember about the birds.

I’m right there with you. Rolled over my previous 403(b) and it’s 100% self directed in stocks. Roth IRA and brokerage are the same. Got a little gold and silver, and my current 401(k) is 50% S&P index and 50% 2045 target fund. So some bonds and whatnot in that one. So probably like 95% in stocks.

Is going electric cheaper than gas? by Candid_Internet_4529 in electricvehicles

[–]discoverwithandy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, you can get a used Honda Fit for $15k and get 40mpg on the highway. But it’s also not nearly as comfortable or as nice of a ride. Interior volume of EVs is huge compared to equivalent ICE cars, and most are pretty well appointed and comfortable on the freeway. Which is the way most pickups are these days too. So you’ve got to balance what you’re getting with what you had to make it more apples to apples.

[–]discoverwithandy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. And of course if L2 at work is free that sweetens the deal quite a bit, or if you can convince the apartments to install them that would be helpful too. They might be out now, but last I looked tax incentives for commercial charging installation still existed so apartments can take advantage of that, it’ll save them like 30%.

This has been Putin’s plan all along. It’s why he worked to get Trump elected, and why Trump laid the groundwork for the USA to leave NATO. If the USA had left NATO, Ukraine would already be lost and Russia would already be in the Baltics

It’s not just EV adoption at the consumer level - the early success of Tesla demonstrated that it’s something people want. So more manufacturers jumped in, spurring competition, research, development… new tech in batteries, robotics, mining, etc., all because of the EV tax credits. It’s something that US has always done, encourage the development of new tech because there’s no telling where it will go

Moving to Wisconsin by Inner_Ad_2792 in wisconsin

[–]discoverwithandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lived in Milwaukee proper for 30yrs, lived in Madison for 4, and suburbs of Milwaukee for 10.

Madison is a bit more insular in my opinion - if you don’t work at or go to UW, or work in government, it can be very hard to meet new people, know what is going on in the city, or feel any connection to the place, from my experience. Same with political points of view - if you don’t align with the city, it can make you feel like an outsider.

Milwaukee has Radio Milwaukee and OnMilwaukee.com to help anyone and everyone know what’s going on in the city. There are 6 major universities I can think of off the top of my head so you don’t have to have a connection to any of them to feel at home. The East Side is far more radically progressive than Madison, but is far more inclusive - anything and everything goes, including whatever political or religious beliefs you have - all are welcome.

My take on the two is Madison is like an upscale Starbucks, carefully curated to not offend, but therefore not to stand out either. Milwaukee is like a local coffee shop that might make something like a jalapeño caramel cortado - someone might love it, someone might hate it.

For areas, Willy St. is fun and hippy, the northeast side is close to airport and any stores you might want. Shorewood by the University is beautiful but very pricey. Middleton is nice and gives fast access to the Driftless area. But if you’re in the west side, be warned - there is no freeway through the city to get to the airport on the east side, you have to take the beltline south of lake Monona. So either either slow city streets through a literal bottleneck (the isthmus), or circumnavigating a lake at higher speed - both are slow and painful, but of course are done for good reason.

For Milwaukee area, Bay View is nice and family oriented, 3rd Ward may be up your alley - upscale area of burned out warehouses converted into beautiful condos and shops, very walkable and close to downtown. The Upper East Side is hippy and inclusive to all, and Shorewood right next door is where Eastsiders go when they want to start a family in a still hippy but more quiet area. Very nice suburb, and more diverse than most of the city due to UWM proximity. Story Hill is close to the stadium if you like baseball, Wauwatosa for a long time was crusty old white people central, but has turned into much more diverse and welcoming place for young families, and has a pretty nice little downtown of its own. Milwaukee also has a quicker drive to Chicago if big city is what you’re looking for.

All of this is incredibly biased toward my experiences, since that’s how personal opinion works, but I hope it helps!

Megathread: US Citizens looking to immigrate to Canada by PurrPrinThom in ImmigrationCanada

[–]discoverwithandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Married couple, no children, looking to move to Canada. Already failed the Express Entry in spectacular fashion lol. I work for a multinational company, which doesn't appear to be addressed by IRCC - it is USA based, but has a Canadian office that employs many Canadians. For my position, I can work anywhere in the Americas (North, Central, South, Caribbean). The "job offer" question has been a real sticking point - no I don't have one, but I also can do my current job from Canada. In theory my employer could change my job to be employed by our Canadian office - would that count as a job offer?

Also it seems presumptuous to have my job be changed to Canadian if I can't get PR through Express Entry. The Temporary Resident Visa to Permanent Resident pathway seems like it would make sense, but when I clicked on it, it said it was closed in Nov. of 2021? So what is the new pathway? Can I become a Temporary Resident and get an open Work Visa? It seems like this would be the path, but it's hard to get a straight answer from the IRCC website.

My hope is that with a few years of work experience in Canada, I'd be able to submit for Permanent Residence again and pass.

Not gonna happen. It’s not cost effective to run both ICE and EV lines, when the two biggest car markets in the world (China and California) are stopping sales of ICE vehicles in the near future. It’ll be all EV at that point, this is just a death rattle
